Keeping the Lights on in the Age of AI
WASHINGTON, July 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — New artificial intelligence data centers and increasing household energy use throughout the United States are stressing the nation's aging electric grid, notes Maureen Quinlan of The Pew Charitable Trusts' energy modernization project. She invites the public to learn more by listening to Pew's 'After the Fact,' podcast. The program recently traveled to Houston—the epicenter of the U.S. power industry—to talk with experts, journalists, and electricity providers about why investments in modernizing the grid are necessary for preventing higher energy bills for consumers, or worse, blackouts that leave communities in the dark.
The episode also explores how innovative solutions such as tapping into battery storage and microgrids could connect nearly 2,600 gigawatts of alternative energy capacity to the grid, which would double the nation's available power supply.
'After the Fact' episode guests include:
Carter Harms, officer, energy modernization project, The Pew Charitable Trusts
Pat Wood III, CEO, Hunt Energy, and member, Pew Distributed Energy Resources Advisory Council
Jennifer Hiller, energy reporter, The Wall Street Journal
Mark Parsons, senior vice president and head of Texas consumer energy, NRG Energy
Jim Nye, chief product officer at Vivint Smart Home, NRG Energy

Efforts to restore road with sinkhole underway, BCA to launch independent investigation The sinkhole at Tanjong Katong Road South has been filled and testing is ongoing to prepare the stretch of road for use. Herman Ching, director of national water agency PUB's water reclamation (network) department, told reporters late on Monday (28 July) that the sinkhole was refilled early in the day with liquefied stabilised soil, which is made of soil, cement and water. When poured into the sinkhole, it will fill all the voids in a matter of hours and eventually form a 'competent soil-like material'. 'This material will provide the strength needed for road construction later,' he reportedly said. On PUB's Facebook page, it said that it's "conducting rigorous tests and scans to detect underground cavities and verify ground stability". It added that "the tests are: 1. ground-penetrating radar (GPR) scan, which uses radio waves to assess the subsurface layers; 2. probing, which involves drilling into the ground to detect the ground condition and presence of any voids; and 3. seismic scanning to record sound waves underground, to identify anomalies that might indicate voids." Meanwhile, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) will carry out an independent investigation into the sinkhole that formed in Tanjong Katong Road South, said National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat. Wall Street futures rise as focus shifts to major earnings, Fed meeting
(Reuters) -U.S. stock index futures edged higher on Tuesday as investors awaited earnings reports from a number of companies and the Federal Reserve's policy meeting that starts later in the day. At 05:19 a.m. ET, Dow E-minis were up 73 points, or 0.16%, S&P 500 E-minis were up 15.25 points, or 0.24%, and Nasdaq 100 E-minis were up 93.25 points, or 0.4%. The moves follow record closing highs for the S&P and the Nasdaq on Monday in volatile trading after the U.S. struck a trade agreement with the European Union, while the Dow remained just about 200 points short of an all-time high. The U.S.-EU deal, announced on Sunday, halved EU import tariffs to 15% and bolstered expectations that more such agreements will follow ahead of President Donald Trump's looming August 1 deadline. Trump on Monday flagged a 'world tariff' of 15-20% for countries that were not negotiating a deal. Expectations were high for a potential breakthrough in U.S.-China negotiations after officials from both sides met in Stockholm on Monday to resolve longstanding economic disputes as the two economies look to extend a truce by three months. Tuesday also marks a busy day for corporate earnings, with results expected from top companies such as UnitedHealth, Boeing, UPS and Procter & Gamble before the bell. Earnings from tech heavyweights Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and Apple are scheduled for later this week, which could test Wall Street's record run. The U.S. central bank is set to begin its two-day policy meeting later in the day. While the Fed is expected to leave rates unchanged on Wednesday, traders will closely analyze policymakers' remarks to gauge the timing of future moves. According to the CME FedWatch tool, markets are pricing in a 61.7% chance of a rate cut in September. The meetings come amid the White House's campaign on the central bank to lower borrowing costs, including Trump's persistent criticism of Fed Chair Jerome Powell and occasional suggestions to remove him from his position. Meanwhile, investors will parse the U.S. Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report for June, as well as the consumer confidence figure for July later in the day. Among earnings-related moves, Cadence Design jumped 6.6% in premarket trading after the chip design software provider raised its annual sales and profit forecast.
