Working from home? Understand the insurance implications before you set up

As many people embrace the convenience of home offices, only a few realise that this work-life-balance choice could have significant implications for their insurance policies.
Nomie Nxumalo, executive head for people and transformation at Miway, urges South Africans to review their home and car insurance to ensure they remain adequately covered if they opt to work from the comfort of their personal space.
'Most standard home insurance policies are structured around personal use of the home. Whether you're running a business or working remotely, it's crucial to declare to your insurer if a portion of your home is being used for business purposes,' Nxumalo said.
She said that not doing so could result in claims being declined or certain losses not being covered.
There is a shift in the purpose of property, as homes are no longer a mere living place only.
Last month, John Herbst, CEO of Fine & Country Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), said properties today serve multiple purposes; they are now spaces to work, create, entertain, and relax.
'For real estate professionals, this means shifting the conversation from square metres to possibility. The work-from-anywhere revolution is not only changing where we live – it's redefining why we live there in the first place,' Herbst said.
The network of independent estate agents said the future of work is hybrid, flexible, and mobile, and the homes people live in need to reflect that.
While remote and hybrid work arrangements have recently started to decline as the return-to-office trend has gained momentum around the globe, many companies continue to embrace these models to attract and retain top talent.

According to Miway, the working-from-home option does impact how South Africans use their homes and vehicles and must be considered when it comes to protecting these important assets.
The South African-based direct insurance company said the integration of workspaces into personal residences brings about certain dynamics to home usage.
It said many homeowners have invested in expensive office equipment, increased their reliance on home internet, and even started running businesses from their residences. However, the insurer said failing to inform insurers about these changes could lead to gaps in coverage or even rejected claims in some cases.
For instance, Miway said home offices often house valuable equipment like computers and printers, as well as back-up supply to routers, which many people installed when loadshedding was at its worst. It added that other items could include fridges and storage, depending on the business activities.
According to the company, these products may require extra coverage beyond a standard insurance policy and would certainly need to be considered under contents coverage.
'Additionally, handling sensitive data from home can expose you to cyber threats, yet most home insurance policies do not include cybersecurity,' Nxumalo said.
She concluded that the best approach is to consult with an insurance professional to tailor coverage to one's specific needs, ensuring all aspects of their work-from-home lifestyle are adequately safeguarded.
The Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) surveyed college graduates in 40 countries across the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa from November 2024 to February 2025 to collect information on working from home (WFH).
The institution said it derived five facts from its study. It found that WFH is highest in North America, the UK and Australia, and lowest in Asia.
The study showed that WFH levels fell from 2022 to 2023 but have since stabilised. Employees with children are more likely to split their workweeks between home and the employer's location, while those without children are more likely to work in a fully remote or fully onsite capacity.
WFH levels are similar for men and women in every major region of the world. The desire to WFH is highest among women with children, the study found.

At the time, FNB revealed that, since November 2019, its customers' stokvel deposits had increased by 42 percent, surpassing the R8,3 billion mark in total member contributions. Across the country, savings through stokvels are estimated to be valued at almost R50 billion a year. On the other hand, Standard Bank, citing data from the National Stokvel Association of South Africa (Nasasa), said there are over 810,000 active stokvels in South Africa, which collect an estimated R50 billion in savings annually from more than 11 million members. 'The challenge is most stokvels have a short-term focus and don't have the long-term view that is required to create real impact. They are also mostly informal, and therefore this also has an impact on the longevity of the stokvel.' She suggested stokvels would do better by being formalised, and taking fractions of their savings, ploughing them into meaningful investments. 'This would have a great economic impact for them, their families, and their communities,' she said. On the other hand, a seasoned entrepreneur, author, and stokvel expert, Busi Skenjana, told IOL that the stokvel ecosystem is fraught with challenges and misconceptions, but if done professionally, the venture can be rewarding - and she has the lived experience. Skenjana has penned a book titled: 'Stokvel Voices: The Truth, the Illusions, and the Opportunities'. 'I would say around stokvels, there is a lot of movement, the ground is actually swelling into the future,' she said. 'Being a member of a stokvel myself, I think people could do better. In the book, I have covered about five stokvels, some of which I belong to. I have actually rated the stokvels - there are about two or three which I give a high rating, according to my assessment. There is still a lot that they could do better.' Skenjana told IOL that there is a need for financial education for members of stokvels and a departure from the mindset of consumerism, where all the savings are destined to be devoured at a given time, or when a target figure is reached. 'You find that many stokvels are consumer oriented, as opposed to long-term investments. For me, that is something that is glaringly not right. The emphasis is on consumerism, as opposed to how we can, together, build wealth as a community, and to address the economic imbalances,' she said. 'We all know the origins of stokvels, which was to try and minimise the economic blow that people suffered through the apartheid era. I still find that there is more of the social and quick disposable money - we save R50,000 which we later distribute among members, blow it then we start all over again. That is wrong and an area of concern.' In her lived experience, Skenjana said she has been part of formalised stokvels, which have managed to make meaningful investments into property and other significant undertakings. She insisted that there are opportunities for young people to come together and make considerable investments as groups, which will help them in their twilight years. 'I have become a gogo and still a member of a stokvel. Gogo does not join a stokvel in her advanced years. No, one joins from their 20s and grows like that. People look at the aged people in stokvels and forget that these people became members of the stokvel when they were young. Some people have been in stokvels for more than 50 years, literally. 'I was speaking to a woman who told me that in their stokvel, they were celebrating the 50th anniversary. Personally, I think I was around 25 years old when I joined the stokvel, and I am 68 years old. I am still a member of two stokvels.' Author Busi Skenjana's life experiences have significantly shaped her understanding and advocacy for stokvels. Image: Supplied Skenjana said she is a proud member of stokvel formed around 1998 which is formally referred to as an investment club, a registered company. 'The model was a stokvel. Ten of us came together and we decided to buy a holiday home in Mpumalanga, and we converted the stokvel into a company. We have been owning that property since 1998, and it is what I can call passive income generation,' she told IOL. 'Note that the property we purchased as a stokvel is an inheritance for our children. This is something that I am trying to preach, this is not about me. Two of our fellow members have passed away, but their children are still benefiting from that stokvel. That is how we have structured it.' IOL has previously reported on incidents where members of traditional stokvels have been robbed while gathered in a house to share money, or of unscrupulous members fleeing with other members' savings. Skenjana said in this era, systems are digitalised to avoid the common pitfalls of dealing with cash. 'My advice is, stop handling cash. Even in our personal lives, it is not safe to be walking around with lots of cash in your handbag or in your back pocket. My advice to stokvels is that they must use the banking system. Banking is fairly accessible in South Africa now, unlike the era when stokvels were initially formed. People have to deposit directly into bank accounts. When it is time to share, at the end of their cycle, they should just do transfers,' she said. 'Handling cash is a no no. Unfortunately, it is still happening with the older generation, because some still say it feels good to have to touch the money physically, to see and feel the paper.' Skenjana said commercial banks have a lot of work to do in terms of guiding the stokvel members on investments. 'Quite the bulk of stokvel money is sitting in bank vaults. Members of stokvels save with the four major banks in South Africa. Having been part of the stokvel terrain, I have even established a stokvel academy. I am still to see a bank that says, we are committed to educating these stokvels. They love these stokvels for their databases, and they try and harvest as many stokvels as possible,' she said. 'In terms of financial education, it is still lacking.' In December, IOL reported that the provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has warned community members, particularly social clubs or stokvels, against carrying large amounts of money, as they can be targeted by criminals and robbed. The appeal was made by the provincial police commissioner following a house robbery where a mother and daughter were robbed. He said preliminary investigations revealed that members of a local social club held a meeting at the victim's residence to discuss how they were going to distribute the money they had saved. That meeting started at around 3 pm. 'The meeting concluded at approximately 7 pm, and the members of the social club departed to their homes and left the victim with her teenage daughter,' said Ledwaba. 'At about 10 pm, three unknown male suspects instantly broke into her house and robbed a substantial amount of cash belonging to the social club and later locked the two victims inside one of the bedrooms before fleeing the scene on foot.' With business slowing down, he returned to the drawing board and began mapping out his dream, what would eventually become Maca Scents, officially launched in 2020. 'We do our best to maximise the quality of perfume we produce,' Siya said. 'But we keep the packaging classy and no-frills. While navigating an industry defined by exclusivity and luxury pricing, we've found that simplicity is not only sustainable but also speaks to our audience,' he added. Inclusivity is another cornerstone of the Maca Scents brand. Siya's inspiration to cater for people with sensitive sinuses and skin came from his own family. 'My mom struggled with sinus issues, and my wife had both sinus and skin sensitivity. It opened my eyes to how many people are excluded from the fragrance experience.' 'In 2024, we launched our Intense range, Extrait de Parfum, which has double the oil concentrate of an average EDP. Customers are often surprised by how much longer our scents last compared to their usual buys,' Siya said. To further support the evolving needs of their market, the brand also introduced refillable perfume atomisers, compact, travel-friendly, and reusable options that encourage sustainability while letting customers sample different fragrances. Their home fragrance range and upcoming car diffusers are a natural extension of the brand. 'We recently launched wedding fragrance packages at the Bridal Expo and received incredible feedback. Our goal is to offer a complete, sensory experience,' he said. Building customer loyalty one scent at a time While Maca Scents operates primarily online via the brand maintains strong personal connections with its customers—thanks to on-the-ground activations, markets, and expos in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West and KwaZulu-Natal. 'Our customers range from those who love the finer things in life to someone who just wants to smell good while doing a grocery run. We want to be their one-stop shop. Many people don't know the difference between EDT, EDP, and Parfum. We make it a point to explain that, without gatekeeping,' Siya added. Entrepreneurship, family, and the road ahead With over four years under their belt, Siya and Trycia run Maca Scents as a tight-knit, family-driven business. Siya holds a BCom qualification and has a background in sales across industries like lighting, publishing, and electrical supplies. Trycia, a Social Sciences graduate, is an integral part of the operation, managing logistics, testing new scents, and being, as Siya puts it, 'my sounding board, guinea pig and most useful support structure.' Looking to the future, Siya envisions a self-sustaining fragrance house with a respected place in South Africa's beauty industry. 'I see Maca Scents becoming a household name. Once it's strong enough to stand on its own, I'd love to explore new ventures,' he said. Emirates ended its 10-year sponsorship of the Johannesburg-based franchise at the end of June, having informed the Lions late last year that the agreement would not be renewed. 'We are negotiating with a few large overseas companies,' Lions CEO Rudolf Straeuli told Rapport. 'What makes things a bit more difficult now is the European holiday period. 'Like last year, Fidelity ADT is the main sponsor of our Currie Cup team. We've also added one or two smaller sponsors to the mix. But we are still in talks with potential major sponsors – international companies – which unfortunately takes more time.' Pieter Burger, managing director of Ellis Park, had previously told Rapport that the Lions were in contact with about six prospective sponsors regarding the naming rights for both the stadium and the team.
