Prix Fitzgerald 2025 Laureate Announced at Hôtel Belles Rives
A Media Snippet accompanying this announcement is available in this link.
The Prix Fitzgerald, created in 2011 by Marianne Estène-Chauvin, President of the Francis Scott Fitzgerald Academy and owner of Belles Rives Group, annually honors a work of fiction that embodies the spirit, elegance, and art of living associated with the American literary icon F. Scott Fitzgerald.
This year's edition holds resonance, marking 100 years since the publication of The Great Gatsby and Fitzgerald's first stay in Juan-les-Pins in 1925, when he and Zelda moved into Villa Saint-Louis—now Hôtel Belles Rives. It was here, overlooking the same blue expanse of Cap d'Antibes, that Fitzgerald worked on Tender Is the Night , and where the mythos of the Riviera as a playground of writers, artists, and exiles began to crystallize.
Ford's Be Mine , which revisits his beloved character Frank Bascombe, was praised for its reflection on aging, caregiving, and parenting in America itself, all told with Ford's signature blend of clarity, wit, and empathy. The jury commended the novel for capturing the existential tensions of modern life with a tone and depth that echoes Fitzgerald's legacy.
'My gratitude to the Prix Fitzgerald jury for their belief not just in my book but in books in general. We all stand on the shoulders of genius—and being here today at Hôtel Belles Rives, in the year we celebrate the centennial of The Great Gatsby, makes me believe it all possible.'
The Prix Fitzgerald ceremony was held on the terrace overlooking the romantic, rocky peninsula with its white pier facing the adjacent islands graced by the 'green light' that once inspired Fitzgerald's most famous novel. The celebration concluded with a Riviera-style dinner held on the legendary terraces of this historic landmark.
'Richard Ford's Be Mine is a masterful—and rare—lesson in restraint, humanity, and emotional clarity. Ford dares to do what few still allow themselves: to write quietly, without flourish, about the subtle pain of fading feelings, the dignity of ordinary lives, and fidelity as an elegant form of melancholy. No grand gestures. No theatrics. Just clean, direct, implacable—and profoundly human—prose. A clarity without drama, yet marked by a light gravity that strikes with precision. It's a novel that doesn't try to shine—and that's precisely why it does,' said Marianne Estène-Chauvin, President of the Francis Scott Fitzgerald Academy and owner of Groupe Belles Rives.
'Like Fitzgerald,' she continued, 'Ford understands that the deepest truths live in silences, in hesitations, in sideways glances. He carries the elegance of disenchantment, the rejection of sentimentality—a style that never needs to raise its voice to move us. It is an honor—and, indeed, a distinctly Fitzgeraldian kind of jubilation—to welcome him among the Prix Fitzgerald laureates.'
Ford joins an esteemed list of past American laureates including Joyce Carol Oates (2024), Quentin Tarantino (2023), Jonathan Dee (2022), Jeffrey Eugenides (2019), Jay McInerney (2016), and Christopher Bollen (2015). Special distinctions have also included the Gatsby Prize to Thadée Klossowski de Rola and the Zelda Prize to Dominique Bona.
Each year, a jury of writers, journalists, and cultural figures—presided over by Bertrand de Saint Vincent, Deputy Director of Le Figaro —selects the Prix Fitzgerald recipient. Nominations are revealed in March, with finalists determined by mid-May, ahead of the June ceremony.
The Prix Fitzgerald remains a singular literary honor on the international scene, not only celebrating literary excellence but also perpetuating the mythos and joie de vivre of the Jazz Age on the Riviera—now more poignant than ever in this centennial year of The Great Gatsby .

I went to Cardiff's new small plates restaurant and there's one thing I would change
The sun is shining and the city is bustling with excitement as we have the pinnacle of beer garden weather. An impressive line-up of big acts are taking over Cardiff this summer and it can only mean one thing – concert-goers are all looking for some good pre-gig grub and somewhere to have a nice drink before dancing the night away. Nomad, a new small plates restaurant, has just opened in Cardiff's High Street in place of Terra Mare. They have a menu that changes monthly with a variety of fresh and tasty options. So we decided to try the new restaurant and see whether or not this could be the summer city hotspot to match the weather. For the latest restaurant news and reviews, sign up to our food and drink newsletter here. READ MORE: Woman 'floored' by price of beer and tapas in Benidorm bar READ MORE: I ate at Jeremy Clarkson's pub 90 minutes from Wales — 1 thing I wish I'd known before going As we walked into the chic new restaurant we were impressed with how beautiful the interior was. The room was a gorgeous dark green with hints of gold and an exquisite bar that looks like it's been influenced by the roaring 20s – very Gatsby. They had a drinks menu that even F Scott Fitzgerald would be impressed with and going with the summery vibes I decided to order a Hugo Spritz. The restaurant itself was quite quiet to begin with as a new location but after we arrived diners started to trickle in. The staff were amazing and extremely accommodating and despite my favourite drink not being on the menu they went ahead and made me one regardless. I can imagine it would be a great venue for weekend drinks and somewhere nice for a dressed-up date we were disappointed to not really have the option of sitting outside during the nice weather. They had a few tables and chairs but they weren't equipped for dining and made a better option for a quick drink. The tables themselves weren't big enough to hold several small plates, which is a shame as other restaurants in the vicinity had the capacity. However if you are keen to stop for a quick drink in the sun then you'll have no problem. After ordering our drinks we moved on to the food menu. They had small plates, large plates, flatbreads, side options, and also a few desserts. In total we ordered a selection of the above dishes including the smoked fish pate, pickled mussels roe, and grilled sourdough, which visually looked amazing (see the main picture). The combination of flavours worked really well and contrast of textures worked well together on the sourdough. Our favourite dish had to be the white and brown crab Caesar salad, spenwood, anchovy and bottarga. It was extremely fresh and a great twist on a classic. On a warm day in Cardiff alongside a refreshing Hugo Spritz it was almost like we were in the Mediterranean. Despite not looking the most appealing the combination of the salty anchovies against the milder crab meat was beautiful. We also ordered the teriyaki chicken thigh, sesame, spring onion, red chilli, and frisée which was beautifully cooked and instantly fell apart though personally I would have preferred a little more teriyaki sauce as I love super-saucy food. The flavour of the teriyaki against the spring onion and the sesame made a lovely combination. Next we ordered my second-favourite dish – the chargrilled flatbread, brown butter, sea salt, Severn and Wye smoked salmon, rocket, capers ,and horseradish. Wow – this was so light and perfect for nipping out on your lunch break. The salmon and the horseradish worked really well together in a combination I'd never really tried. This was paired beautifully with the buttery flatbread and made for a fresh but filling option. It was already cut in to slithers meaning it was a perfect sharing dish. Lastly we ordered some sides in the way of Tenderstem broccoli, pesto, and shallot as well as some truffle and spenwood fries. We enjoyed the fries – while the taste of the truffle was a touch overpowering at times but regardless they were still very tasty. On the other hand we were not a fan of the Tenderstem broccoli as it was charred in such a way that it almost tasted bitter. Overall the food was very fresh and a great option for warm weather dining. There were some elements to the food that were a little lacking but the stand outs for us were the salad and the flatbread. The quality of the seafood on the menu was amazing and this was definitely a personal highlight – hopefully future menus keep the same standard when it comes to its fishy dishes. Would I go again? Well I think it depends on the future menus and what kinds of options they include. I'm a big fan of analysing a menu before I go anywhere and with a menu that continues to change you never know what you are going to get. Will they do thematic or seasonal options? Who knows. But I would be intrigued to see where they go from here – especially as a new restaurant in the heart of the city centre. One thing I will say is I do hope they improve their outdoor dining options for the summer with more people are keen to eat outside. You can read more about Nomad and what they have to offer here.

Best rivalries in sports: Amanda Serrano vs. Katie Taylor fight adds a punch
Amanda Serrano speaks with authority. Katie Taylor speaks barely above a whisper. The Puerto Rican Serrano is a 36-year-old southpaw. The Irish Taylor is a 39-year-old fighting out of the orthodox stance. Together, they've formed a sizzling rivalry in the boxing ring, earning them a spot among some of sports greatest rivalries. It'll be on global display July 11, 2025. Fighting each other for the third time, Serrano and Taylor will square off in the main event during an all-women's card at Madison Square Garden to be televised by Netflix. The first two fights were electric, with Taylor winning both by decision even though the outcome could have gone either way. Jabs, hooks, uppercuts. Non-stop action. Fightin until the final bell. The big winner, as is the case with rivalries, is the fans. Here's a look at some of the greatest sports rivalries through the years: Ford vs. Ferrari A 98-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes in the first evidence that Ford vs. Ferrari deserves a spot among greatest sport rivalries. Few of them inspire films that star Matt Damon and Christian Bale. Ford vs. Ferrari in real life was even better. In 1963, bad blood led Ford Motor Company to build a race car that would challenge Ferrari. Which at first seemed about as plausible as the Cleveland Browns building a Super Bowl contender. Or the Washington Wizards building a NBA championship team. Or the Colorado Rockies … OK, you get the drift. Yet Ferrari's superiority drove Ford in a way only a rival can. In 1966, Ferrari had a six-year winning streak at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That year, Ford finally beat Ferrari, when the Ford GT40s finished 1-2-3 and a rivalry was born. Ford vanquished Ferrari yet again the following year at LeMans. Kobe vs. Shaq Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal, who played together for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1996 to 2004, proved that being teammates does not preclude a rivalry. Neither does winning. They pulled off a three-peat together, leading the Lakers to the NBA championship in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Yet it would have been a stretch to call them friends. The rivalry was born on the basketball court – especially at practice – where O'Neal lacked the discipline, drive and leadership that defined Bryant. The partnership ended in 2004 when O'Neal was traded to the Miami Heat. Though O'Neal won another NBA title in 2006 with the Heat and Bryant won NBA titles in 2009 and 2010, no amount of Larry O'Brien trophies offset the loss of a special rivalry. Ohio State vs. Michigan In 2017, A self-described Ohio State fan posted on social media video of him mowing the script Ohio on the lawn of a Michigan fan. Cute, but there's not much cute about the rivalry on the football field. Woody Hayes vs. Bo Schembechler. 'The Shoe" vs. 'The Big House.'' Scarlet and grey vs. maize and blue. Any confusion over this sentence should might earn residents or Ohio or Michigan removal to another state. It's a rivalry that lives and breathes on the football field and obsesses the adjoining states. Losing sting.s But losses against this rival? They burn. The inaugural clash between the two schools took place in 1897, when Michigan fans' lawns were safe. It's lost no luster since. Michigan entered this year's game as a 19 ½ point favorite, and the Wolverines prevailed 13-10. Going on to win the national championship was Ohio State's consolation prize. Joey Chestnut vs. Takeru Kobayashi Joey 'Jaws'' Chestnut stood 6-1 and weighed over 200 pounds. Takeru 'The Tsunami'' Kobayashi stood 5-8 and weighed 130 pounds. Together, at an astounding pace, they devoured hot dogs and buns on the world's biggest stage – the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, New York. The timing of the annual contest accentuated their differences – an American man competing against a Japanese man in front of a largely American crowd on the Fourth of July – that helped stoke their competition. The rivalry was hotter than anything Nathan's was grilling on the day of the contest. Five years of hot dog eating madness. From 2005 to 2009, Chestnut and Kobayashi stood on the same stage and went head to head. Twice Kobayashi won in regulation. Twice Chestnut won in regulation. Once they went into overtime, with Chestnut prevailing in a five hot dog eat-off in 2008. Two years later, Kobayashi left the contest over a contract dispute. Last year Chestnut was barred from Nathan's because of his own contract dispute. And so the great rivalry was renewed. Jaws and a bulked-up Tsunami went head-to-head one last time with Netflix livestreaming the contest. It was no contest. Chestnut ate a world-record 83 hot dogs. Kobayashi at 66. Afterwards, on stage, they did not shake hands. They did not exchange a glance. The rivalry still burned.
