'I'm hoping we get a pullback': Morgan Stanley's CIO says any potential tariff-fueled drop in stocks is a buying opportunity

Stocks are entering a new bull market, according to Morgan Stanley's CIO.
However, tariff risks could cause up to a 10% drop in the stock market in the next few months.
Investors should take use any corrections as a buying opportunity, according to Wilson.
Mike Wilson sees the S&P 500 hitting 6,500 by year-end, but the path to new all-time highs will be choppy.
Morgan Stanley's chief investment officer told Bloomberg TV on Thursday that he expects tariff volatility to ramp up in the third quarter, potentially sparking pullbacks of 5% to 10%.
Investors shouldn't be worried, though. Wilson thinks any upcoming corrections will be "short and shallow," presenting a great opportunity to buy the dip.
"I'm hoping we get a pullback to some degree," Wilson said on Bloomberg on Thursday. "A lot of clients are looking for a pullback of some kind."
Wilson has been pleasantly surprised at the resiliency of markets and their rapid recovery. In his opinion, April's Liberation Day chaos firmly marked the bottom for the stock market, and he anticipates a strong upward trajectory going forward for equities.
"This is what the beginning of a new bull market looks like," Wilson said. "It's just explosive — it doesn't let people in. The rate of change is accelerating beyond what you expected."
"The earnings revision breadth is explosive," Wilson added. "You can't deny the fact that companies are good are mitigating tariffs."

Earnings revision breadth, or the proportion of analysts who have raised their estimates minus the proportion who have lowered them, has improved significantly in the past few months. In April, earnings revision breadth was overwhelmingly negative at -25%. Today, the metric has fully turned a corner into positive territory, reaching 3%.
The earnings recovery has been especially pronounced in the financials sector, which Morgan Stanley is overweight on.
Morgan Stanley anticipates tariff impacts will become clearer in the third quarter as companies begin passing more of the cost on to consumers. Wilson's expecting a hit to corporate profits, especially for smaller companies with less pricing power, and increased inflation.
After a few months of relatively benign inflation reports, the June CPI number was slightly hotter than expected, indicating that tariffs are beginning to show up in economic data.
However, given the strong fundamentals of the stock market, Wilson believes any headline risks won't pose a serious threat to the S&P 500's continued upward trajectory.

Morgan Stanley unpacks Tesla's edge: culture, talent, and strategy

-- Tesla's competitive edge lies not only in its products but in a cultural, strategic, and technological alignment that legacy automakers struggle to replicate, according to Morgan Stanley analysts. In a wide-ranging note released on Friday, the bank stated that Tesla's dual role as both a carmaker and a tech company affords it unique advantages, particularly as cars evolve into 'AI-driven robots.' 'The recent amping up of the AI/robotics talent war is a key reason why we expect Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) to host an 'AI Day' in the not-too-distant future,' said Morgan Stanley. The event, they argue, would serve as a powerful recruitment tool amid escalating competition for top engineering talent. The analysts also praised Tesla's minimalist approach to autonomy. While rivals embrace sensor fusion with radar and LiDAR, Tesla is 'doubling down' on a camera-only system. 'Annoyingly… Elon is right,' said a vision expert at a rival autonomous vehicle firm, quoted in the note. Morgan Stanley drew an analogy to two 'Baby Tarzans,' one over-equipped, the other given nothing, to argue that Tesla's stripped-down sensorial approach could yield faster learning and long-term superiority. The bank also questioned the potential impact of growing government involvement in strategic industries. While noting the U.S. Department of Defense's investment in rare earth producer MP Materials, Morgan Stanley asked whether further direct state ownership in strategic sectors could 'unintentionally stifle homegrown organic competition.' Ultimately, the analysts argue Tesla's 'sensorial parsimony,' talent strategy, and long-term autonomy vision are underappreciated by investors, and remain key to the company's potential lead in the robotaxi and humanoid markets. ‘Don't Pull the Trigger Just Yet,' Says Top Investor About Nvidia Stock

Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) stock has been on a wild ride over the past few months – after hitting a 52-week low during the early April Liberation Day slump, it has since bounced back ~83%. Much of that rebound was driven by renewed investor optimism around AI demand, and the past week brought even more fuel to the fire. The Trump administration assured Nvidia that it would be allowed to export its advanced AI chips to China – a major relief, given that the company had taken a $4.5 billion revenue hit in Fiscal Q1 2026 due to those export restrictions. With this regulatory overhang lifted, some investors might assume Nvidia is back on an unstoppable path. But not everyone is convinced that now is the time to pile in. Top investor Brett Ashcroft Green urges caution, arguing that the recent rally may have already run too far, too fast. 'As enthusiastic as I am, the run has just been too far too fast, and I am downgrading NVDA,' explains Green, who ranks among the top 4% of TipRanks' stock pros. The investor doesn't question Nvidia's fundamental strength. In fact, he believes the long-term growth story remains intact, especially with a potential catalyst on the horizon: sovereign AI. These country-specific systems, tailored to local regulations, have been championed by CEO Jensen Huang for years. The recent U.S. government adoption of AI tools like Elon Musk's Grok may be just the beginning of a broader global push. If sovereign AI gains traction, demand for Nvidia's chips could scale even faster than current forecasts suggest. However, Green tempers expectations by pointing out supply constraints. Nvidia likely won't be able to manufacture chips fast enough to meet soaring global demand, which naturally limits its growth trajectory. What's more concerning to Green, as noted, is how much more expensive the stock has become from a valuation perspective. In April, Nvidia had the third-lowest Forward Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratio among the Magnificent 7 at 21.31x. It now holds the second-highest at 39.75x. 'If you own it, hold it and enjoy the ride, if not, I'd personally wait for better prices as the market basks in giddiness,' Green concludes, rating NVDA shares a Hold (i.e., Neutral). (To watch Green's track record, click here) Wall Street, meanwhile, maintains a bullish stance. NVDA holds a Strong Buy consensus, backed by 34 Buy ratings versus just 3 Holds and a single Sell. However, the average price target of $182.06 implies only ~6% upside from current levels, suggesting that while sentiment remains positive, much of the expected growth may already be priced in. It will be interesting to see whether analysts revise their targets upward in the coming weeks.
