EXCLUSIVE: Michael Owen expresses heartbreak over the tragic loss of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva
'I heard the news while I was up in the sky flying over to Durban. It's just the most tragic, most awful news you can hear, really. My first thoughts are with the family,' a visibly pained Owen said at Sibaya Casino in Durban on Friday afternoon.
'Diogo was only married for about two weeks. He leaves behind a wife and three young children. Being a father myself, I can't imagine the pain they are going through.'
He said the loss to the club, and the greater football family paled in comparison.
'When I first hear of things like this, that hopefully don't happen too often, I always try to refrain from thinking what they were like as a footballer and what they mean to a football club and things like that,' the 45-year-old Owen told Independent Media Sports exclusively.
'That's almost what comes after. I think first and foremost he's a son, he's a father, he's a brother, he's a husband. He's all of those things and to the family they'll be hurting and broken more than anybody else, so that's what I feel we should be thinking of and praying for at the moment.
'I mean, his poor mother has lost two sons in one fell swoop. It's just horrific and, of course, very sad.'
Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool and won four major honours: two League Cups, one FA Cup and, most notably, last season's Premier League title.
Owen did reveal a little about the forward who had just celebrated Portugal's Nations League triumph over Spain, and was said to be making his way back to Liverpool with his brother when the accident happened.
The death of the brothers has cast a pall over their entire football and wider sporting world, with condolences and tributes pouring in from all over.

Latest on Etiosa Ighodaro's Kaizer Chiefs move!
Kaizer Chiefs are currently out in the Netherlands stepping up preparations for the new season under coach Nasreddine Nabi. Chiefs arrive in Holland having both old and fresh faces for coach Nabi to fine tune before a busy season. Last Chiefs confirmed the three acquisitions of Nkanyiso Shinga, Flavio Silva and Ethan Chislett . All three players being formerly overseas-based players prior to joining Amakhosi. The latter on the list, an attacking midfielder had quite a few options to stay abroad, including English League One side Wigan and Scottish Premier League side Motherwell. Chiefs were not done just yet, they then announced the former Orlando Pirates duo of Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane. The two defenders joining was perhaps the worst kept secret from the bunch, having reportedly signed their deals the earliest. They then followed that up with the signing of another former Buccaneer in Siphesihle Ndlovu. But that is not where the transfer activity is expected to stop for Chiefs. One of the players they have been rumoured to have signed is striker Etiosa Ighodaro. With six deals announced, it has been quiet on his front, despite talk of being available as a free agent after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns. Now according to Soccer-Laduma , Chiefs are still interested in signing Ighodaro but are waiting on his papers. 'Well, it's believed that the club (Chiefs) is still interested in signing Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro but they have to look at the foreign quota first. And for now they have five foreign players on their books. But they are waiting for Ighodaro to obtain his PRP which he has qualified for now and that's why they can't sign any foreign players now,' said a source to the same publication. Chiefs fans, where do you stand on Ighodaro joining your club? Let us know by clicking on the comment tab. Or by emailing info@ or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Arsenal sign Spain midfielder Zubimendi
"This is a huge moment in my career," said the defensive midfielder. Arsenal on Sunday announced the signing of midfielder and Euro 2024 winner Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in a deal reportedly worth around £55 million ($75 million). 'It's the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are. 'I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me. They have shown their potential recently and the best is yet to come.' The Athletic reported that Arsenal paid above Zubimendi's 60 million euro ($71 million, £51 million) buyout clause in order to spread the cost of the fee over a number of installments. Zubimendi, 26, made 236 appearances in all competitions for Sociedad after graduating from the club's academy and has played 19 times for Spain. He will reinforce manager Mikel Arteta's midfield options after the departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho. Zubimendi's arrival paves the way for Arsenal's record signing Declan Rice to play a more attacking midfield role alongside captain Martin Odegaard. 'Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team,' said Arteta. 'He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us.' Zubimendi is Arsenal's second signing of the summer transfer window after goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga joined from Chelsea. The Gunners are also expected to complete the signing of midfielder Christian Norgaard from Brentford. Arsenal finished second in the Premier League last season for a third straight year and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League but ultimately ended up without a trophy for a fifth consecutive season. Attention will now turn to the forward line as the Gunners try to see off champions Liverpool and Manchester City and claim a first league title since 2003/04. Reports on Sunday suggest a deal for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres is on the verge of being sealed to fill the need for a new number nine. Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Chelsea's Noni Madueke.

Owen tips Liverpool for title glory again – with 80% confidence
Arne Slot will get the chance to further imprint his style on Liverpool next season after leading the club to a 20th elite division title. The horse breeder and owner's passion for horse-racing is said to be just as strong as his passion for football. 'I do believe that they're absolutely the team to beat. When you're strengthening from a position of strength then that's obviously double trouble for your opponents,' said Owen, who was in Durban at the weekend as a SunBet ambassador for his first Durban July experience. Liverpool and England football legend Michael Owen is 80% confident that the Reds will repeat last season's Premier League title heroics, with Arsenal given only a 20% chance by the football pundit. Legendary football player and current racehorse breeder and owner Michael Owen engaged with fans at Sibaya Casino in Durban on Friday. Liverpool finished last season, their first under new manager Arne Slot following the departure of club icon Jürgen Klopp, on 84 points, 10 points clear of nearest challengers Arsenal. Pep Guardiola's formerly dominant Manchester City side limped to third place after an inconsistent campaign. Liverpool equalled Manchester United's record of 20 top-flight titles with their surprise league triumph. Owen, the last English player to win the Ballon d'Or, is convinced that the Reds will claim back-to-back crowns to go clear of their fierce rivals. The Anfield giants have certainly started their transfer business with intent. The death of star striker Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in a tragic car accident late last week has been the only damper to the otherwise upbeat mood surrounding the Reds. The record £116m acquisition of Germany's star midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen was further bolstered by the arrival of left-back Milos Kerkez and right-back Jeremie Frimpong. Their goalkeeping stocks have also been reinforced by last season's signing Giorgi Mamardashvili, alongside two additional acquisitions. Speculation linking England centre-back Marc Guéhi with a move from Crystal Palace also refuses to go away, with young central defender Jarell Quansah departing Anfield for Leverkusen. 'When I look at the opponents, who's going to improve so much to keep up with Liverpool?' Owen asked in an exclusive interview with Independent Media Sport at Sibaya Casino in Durban. 'I don't see anybody, if I'm honest. Maybe Arsenal might pose a threat. 'I think Manchester City have fallen a bit too far behind and have made so many changes, and having to make changes, I'd find it hard to envisage them bouncing straight back. 'Of the other teams, Chelsea might pose a small threat but I don't think they're good enough. Same with Aston Villa. Man United and Tottenham are too far away. 'I mean, 80% of me sees Liverpool and 20% sees Arsenal winning. I can't really see anyone else.' There is still plenty of time left in the transfer window for the Reds' title rivals to strengthen their squads, however. The former goal poacher, who also had spells at Real Madrid, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Stoke City, could yet be left with egg on his face. The 2025/26 English Premier League season will kick off on 15 August, with the defending champions facing Bournemouth in their opener.
