Microsoft Layoffs 2025: Tech Giant Now Cuts 40 More Jobs Amid Record AI Spend

Microsoft laid off 40 employees in Washington state, adding to job cuts this year. Despite strong finances, the company invests heavily in AI, with $30 billion planned by 2025. Microsoft has laid off 40 employees in Washington state, adding to the series of job cuts it has made this year. This latest round of layoffs was disclosed in a state filing on Monday, even as the company continues to report strong financial performance and increase its investments in artificial intelligence, according to Moneycontrol. Despite these workforce reductions, Microsoft recently announced record-breaking quarterly revenue and profit, driven by strong growth in its cloud and AI businesses. The company has invested $88 billion over the past year to bolster its AI infrastructure and plans to spend an additional $30 billion by September 2025, the report stated. Microsoft had cut about 9,000 employees, or 4% of its workforce, in the latest round of job cuts. The third round of layoffs happened after 6000 job cuts (3% of its workforce) in May and over 300 sackings just a week earlier. The Bloomberg report had also mentioned that Microsoft has allocated a capital expenditure of around Rs 6.6 lakh crore ($80 billion) for the current financial year. A substantial portion of this budget will be dedicated to expanding data centre infrastructure, aiming to alleviate the strain on existing facilities that support AI services. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Gold jumps Rs 800 to Rs 98,820/10 g; silver rallies Rs 2,000

Agency: New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) Gold prices jumped by Rs 800 to Rs 98,820 per 10 grams in the national capital on Tuesday due to heavy buying by stockists, according to the All India Sarafa Association. The yellow metal of 99.9 per cent purity had settled at Rs 98,020 per 10 grams in the previous market close. Gold of 99.5 per cent purity in the national capital appreciated by Rs 700 to Rs 98,500 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Tuesday. The precious metal had closed at Rs 97,800 per 10 grams on Monday. 'Gold prices rose on Tuesday, supported by demand for safe haven and an increasing consensus that the US Federal Reserve will restart its interest rate-cutting cycle in the upcoming meeting next month. 'Dovish remarks from Federal Reserve officials, along with last week's disappointing job market report, led traders to become more optimistic about potential rate cuts at the Fed's upcoming meeting in September, boosting gold traders sentiment," Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst, Commodities at HDFC Securities, said. As per the Sarafa Association, silver prices rallied Rs 2,000 to Rs 1,12,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Tuesday. The white metal had finished at Rs 1,10,000 per kg in the previous market session. 'Spot gold extended its rally to close nearly 0.30 per cent higher on Monday at USD 3,375 per ounce as US factory orders fell in June. 'The US President Donald Trump threatening India with significantly steep tariffs over Russian oil purchases also boosted the metal as the Indian rupee fell to Rs 88/dollar in the NDF market," Praveen Singh, Associate Vice-President, Fundamental currencies and commodities at Mirae Asset Share Khan, said. Meanwhile, spot gold fell by USD 20.95 or 0.62 per cent to USD 3,352.61 per ounce in New York. 'Gold is holding steady near USD 3,430 per ounce as markets await the release of the ISM Services PMI and the latest US trade balance data," Kaynat Chainwala, AVP Commodity Research at Kotak Securities, said. On the international front, spot silver was trading flat at USD 37.39 per ounce. Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities said, 'The primary focus remains on trade tariff developments, with the US looking to recalibrate tariffs in its favour." Despite the short-term dip, gold continues to price in the broader impact of trade tariff uncertainty and dollar weakness, keeping the overall trend supported," he added. Business confidence index rises to 149.4 in April-June: NCAER

New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) The Business Confidence Index (BCI) rose sharply to 149.4 in the April-June period from 139.3 in the last quarter of 2024-25, according to the Business Expectations Survey of National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). NCAER in a statement said the BCI is based on four components — overall economic conditions to improve in next six months, financial position of firms will improve in the next six months, present investment climate and whether present capacity utilisation was close to or above optimal level. The share of positive responses across the four components remains above 60 per cent in the first quarter and also each component exhibited improving trend compared to the preceding quarter, the statement added. Majority of respondents expected production (78.7 per cent) and domestic sales (79.1 per cent) to increase in the next six months. The statement said sentiments about export of final products also improved (66.5 per cent) in the first quarter of the current fiscal year. Percentage of firms expecting import of raw materials to rise also increased (54.3 per cent) from the preceding quarter (46.1 per cent), signalling a push in domestic production activities, it added. Regarding sentiments about pre-tax profits, nearly 61 per cent of firms expected them to rise, indicating continued buoyancy. However, the statement said buoyancy in business sentiments was not reflected in the labour markets that showed signs of stagnation with both sentiments about hiring and expectations of wage rates remaining unchanged over the next six months. NCAER's Professor Bornali Bhandari, who led the survey, said, 'With moderation in costs, firms were more optimistic about the next six months." The quarterly survey was carried out in June, covering 479 companies spread across six cities, the statement added.
