Euro 2025: Netherlands ready to believe in miracles and win big against France to advance
BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Posed with the question 'Do you believe in miracles?' at the Women's European Championship, the Netherlands said it does.
The Dutch likely must beat an in-form France by three clear goals on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals, needing to make up ground after a 4-0 beating by England.
'Miracles exist,' Netherlands coach Andries Jonker said in translated comments on Saturday. 'After a very heavy 4-0 defeat there is one thing you can do, rise up again.'
The scenario in Group D is that France sits top on six points, and England is expected also to end on six points by beating Wales in the final round of games played at the same time on Sunday evening in Switzerland.
That would leave just one Dutch path to finish runner-up to England in the standings — a big win over France to lift them in a three-way tiebreaker between the six-point teams. The decider would be goal difference for those three teams in games against each other while excluding their results against Wales.
'Remember Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain,' Jonker said, citing the men's Champions League epic in 2017 that is known in soccer lore as 'La Remontada,' the comeback.
Barcelona lost 4-0 in Paris in the first leg of the round of 16, then won 6-1 at home to advance.
'There is no other option,' added Jonker, once an assistant coach at Barcelona, but to deliver an unforgettable game and performance.
France coach Laurent Bonadei saw no disrespect when told of Jonker's comments — and countered with humor.
'That's normal, that's his role,' Bonadei said of his counterpart's confidence, though noted his own team's threat after scoring six goals across its two wins so far.
'It's maybe not 3-0 that he needs to win, but 5-2 or 6-3,' said the France coach, whose team needs only a point to top the standings. 'It will be a beautiful game. I would prefer to be in our place than theirs.'
Of course, if tournament debutant Wales was to stop England winning — not miraculous, though unlikely after losing to the Netherlands and 4-1 to France — then a win of any kind for the Dutch would be enough to advance.
'Wales is so eager to beat England,' said the Netherlands' veteran No. 10 Daniëlle van de Donk, who also was asked if she believed in miracles.
'I believe in our team,' van de Donk said in translated comments, 'and in football anything is possible.'

Barcelona star considering surgery that could have major transfer impact
Barcelona star Marc-Andre ter Stegen is considering a second surgery in the space of a year, amid intense speculation over his future. The Blaugrana captain has been told that he will be third-choice this season behind Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny if he remains at the club, but so far has vowed to fight for his spot. The 33-year-old spent much of last season out injured after undergoing knee surgery, with Wojciech Szczesny signed out of retirement to replace him. As he returned from injury in May, ter Stegen played a handful of games, but missed out on playing in crucial clashes against Real Madrid and Inter. Ter Stegen considering surgery As per Jijantes, ter Stegen is considering going under the knife for a second time in the space of a year, and the fourth time in the last four years. He has an ongoing back problem that has kept him out of training for the past five days, and limited to work in the gym. Image via Getty Images Registration and recovery for ter Stegen If he does undergo surgery, ter Stegen would be ruled out for several months of action. Barcelona could use the long-term injury rule to register other players in his absence, including Joan Garcia. Jijantes note that it could be enough money to include Garcia in their squad, and complete another operation. Consequences for ter Stegen and Barcelona It would potentially save Barcelona a headache in terms of registration in the short-term, but it could more or less rule out a departure this summer, and any hope of saving money on his salary. Similarly, for ter Stegen it would further hurt his chances of remaining Germany's number one for the World Cup next summer. This past season Barcelona used the rule to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, but were then faced with a registration issue in January, which they only resolved through a court order.

West Indies' Andre Russell retiring from internationals after Australia T20s
KINGSTON, Jamaica — West Indies allrounder Andre Russell is retiring from international cricket after the two Twenty20s against Australia at his Sabina Park home ground. The games are on Sunday and Tuesday. Russell has played 84 T20s since 2011 and was a World Cup champion in 2012 and 2016. He's passed up a chance to play at a sixth T20 World Cup in eight months in India. Cricket West Indies said the 37-year-old Russell 'remains a high-impact player and was selected on merit.' 'To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life,' Russell said. 'When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realise what you can achieve. This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others.' Daren Sammy was Russell's captain at both World Cup triumphs and has become his national coach. 'Andre has always been the consummate professional and a fierce competitor,' Sammy said. 'Whether I was captaining him or now coaching him, his hunger to perform and win for West Indies has never wavered. I wish him all the best on his next chapter, and I hope he continues to inspire generations to come.' Russell began his international career at age 22 with his sole test in 2010 against Sri Lanka. He played his 56th and last one-day international at the 2019 World Cup. He was a controversial selection as he'd played only one ODI since 2015 following a doping ban and knee injury. But he became the fastest player, in terms of balls played, to 1,000 ODI runs. Since then he's become a T20 great, sought by franchises all over the world. This month he was playing for Los Angeles in Major League Cricket. Russell will be replaced by Matthew Forde for the three T20s in St. Kitts and Nevis against Australia. ___ AP cricket:

🤑 Arsenal break women's world record to sign Liverpool star
Arsenal have announced the signing of Liverpool forward Olivia Smith in a deal which has shattered the transfer record in the women's game. The Champions League holders are reportedly the first club to break the £1m mark with the deal to bring the Canada international to north London. It eclipses the estimated £900,000 Chelsea paid earlier this year to sign defender Naomi Girma - the previous world record and the first time a player moved for $1m or more. Smith, 20, was Liverpool's record signing last summer when she arrived from Sporting CP and enjoyed a successful debut campaign in the WSL, netting seven times in 20 appearances. Despite the Reds initially rejecting several offers for a player who had multiple years left to run on her contract in Merseyside, the tantalising bid from Arsenal proved too much to resist. She joins Chloe Kelly, Taylor Hinds and Anneke Borbe in making moves to the Gunners this summer ahead of their assault on defending their status as Europe's top dogs next season. 📸 Jess Hornby - 2025 Getty Images
