Trade war: 'India's ties with US have weathered many transitions,' says MEA
"This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges. We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to and are confident that the relationship will continue to move forward," MEA spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said. At the same time, the govt underlined the significance of the relationship with Russia calling it steady and time-tested.
MEA: India and Russia have time-tested ties
Trump announced 25% tariffs on imports from India this week and also threatened to impose a penalty for India's oil and defence procurement from Russia.
On crude imports from Russia, govt reiterated India's position that it's guided by what is on offer in the markets, and by the prevailing global circumstances, in securing its energy needs.
On defence procurements, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said sourcing of India's defence requirements is determined solely by its national security imperatives and strategic assessments.
Despite repeated provocations by Trump, India has so far avoided getting into a slanging match with Americans, focusing instead on ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade deal that it hopes will alleviate some of the President's concerns about US' lopsided trade with India.

Asked about Trump tariffs and its implications for the relationship, the official said India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values and robust people-to-people ties.
On defence cooperation, Jaiswal said India has a strong defence partnership with the US that has been strengthening over the past several years. There is potential for this partnership to grow further under the India-US COMPACT for the 21st century.
In Feb this year, Trump and PM Modi launched a new initiative — the 'US-India COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century' — to drive 'transformative change' across key pillars of cooperation.
Asked about ties with Russia, the official said India's bilateral relationships with various countries stand on their own merit and should not be seen from the prism of a third country. 'India and Russia have a steady and time-tested partnership,' added the official.

After a lag, US consumers begin to feel tariff pinch
. Many businesses chose to absorb the additional tax during the early days of President Donald Trump's trade war. But evidence is emerging that they are running out of options to keep prices stable in the face of deteriorating profit margins, suggesting that the tariffs could have a more pronounced effect on prices in the months ahead. US govt data, including from the commerce department this past week, shows that prices rose in June on items heavily exposed to tariffs, such as home furnishings, toys and appliances. And in recent days - before Trump announced tariffs for much of the world Thursday night - Adidas, Procter & Gamble, Stanley Black & Decker and other large corporations told investors that they either had increased prices or planned to do so soon to offset the tariff costs. Companies like Walmart and toymakers Hasbro and Mattel had already warned that tariffs would lead to higher prices. "We have no interest in running a lower-margin business, particularly due to tariffs," Richard Westenberger, the chief financial officer of Carter's, a children's apparel maker, said on a call with analysts July 25. Sarah House, an economist at Wells Fargo, said the next three to six months would be "crunchtime," as more tariff rates solidified. Trump and his advisers have maintained that foreign countries will eat the tariffs. But so far, while there are some signs that the exporters are swallowing the additional cost, most of it is being passed on to American importers, according to department of labour data on import prices.

CM unveils T sports policy, says will bring youth back to ground
Hyderabad: In a big fillip to the sport in the state, chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday unveiled the sports policy, which he said would put the youth on the right track. The CM felt the new sports policy would bring back the sporting glory the city enjoyed in the past. "Hyderabad has a rich history of sports. Nine of the Indian football team that finished fourth in the 1954 Olympics were from Hyderabad. But the state lost track later and the sport was neglected in the last 10-15 years without proper policy. The youth, who played a crucial part in achieving a separate state, are now addicted to drugs. We plan to bring them back to the grounds with the new policy," Revanth Reddy said, addressing the sporting fraternity at the 1st Telangana Sports Conclave at HICC, Izzatnagar. He also sounded a warning that the state has declared a war on drug mafia and no one would be spared in this regard. "Our govt is committed to promoting sports. We have shown our commitment by giving Group I posts and plots to cricketer Mohammed Siraj and boxer Nikhat Zareen. Our govt policy is clear. We have formed committees with former athletes and administrators. There will be no influence from the govt," he added. He further revealed that they offered to host Khelo India games and also plan to hold two disciplines if India gets to host the 2036 Olympics. "We will have a dedicated sports university and sports academy. Our aim is to see India as a sporting nation and, as a part of our Telangana Rising Vision 2047, a chapter will be dedicated to sports. There was no budget for sports till now. We will have dedicated budget for the betterment of the sport," he added. MoUs with foreign universities During the one-day conclave, the state govt signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with two foreign universities — Korea National Sports University in Seoul, South Korea, and Loughborough University based in Loughborough and London. The proposed sports university, to be run from Gachibowli for now, would share academic knowledge, curriculum, coaches training programmes, academic research and project collaboration. The govt has also signed MoUs with Olympic bronze medal winning shooter Gagan Narang's Gun For Glory, Abhinav Bindra's Sports Academy and FIFA to establish a FIFA Talent Academy in the state. They also signed MoUs with Anil Kumble's Tenvic, which will help them scout talent in 1,000 residential schools with 50 of them being centres of excellence (CoEs), Olympic Values Education Programme and Aspire for Her. Narang, Bindra and Pullela Gopichand would also conduct shooting, sports science and badminton mentorship programmes respectively. Incentives to athletes The CM also handed over cash incentives to athletes who had done the state proud by winning medals. Athlete Agasara Nandini, who won a gold in heptathlon at the 26th Asian athletics championship in South Korea received Rs 5 lakh,while gymnast Nishika Agarwal, who won a bronze in vault event, was rewarded with Rs 3 lakh. Differently-abled shooter Dhanush Srikanth was given a cheque for Rs 10 lakh for winning two gold medals in men and mixed team event at the World Deaf shooting championships last year. Goalball athletes Pavan Kalyan, P Sai Teja and coach G Shiva Kumar were given Rs 4.8 lakh. Panel to oversee Sports University Special chief secretary, sports, Jayesh Ranjan revealed that "the sports policy is inclusive, with focus on grassroots and schools to identify the talent and nurture it through proper system". Around 50 residential schools will have a centre of excellence (CoE) with top-class coaches and athletes would be provided with a proper ecosystem. To oversee the whole process and run the world-class sports academy, a governing council with 15 prominent personalities has been formed. With Sanjeev Goenka as chairman and Upasana Kamineni as the co-chairperson, the panel would have the likes of BV Papa Rao, Kapil Dev, Abhinav Bindra, Pullela Gopichand, Baichung Bhutia, Ravikanth Reddy, Vita Dani, Kavya Maran and C Shashidhar, with Jayesh Ranjan and Sports Authority of Telangana chairman Shiva Sena Reddy as govt representatives.
