Massive loggerhead sea turtle full of eggs returns to ocean after treatment in Florida

Independent5 days ago
A large sea turtle that was found injured along the Florida coast in May following a boat strike was returned to the ocean on Wednesday.
The adult female named Pennywise, which weighs 302 pounds (137 kilograms), was deemed healthy and strong enough to return to the wild after being treated by Loggerhead Marinelife Center's veterinary team for the past few months.
'Sea turtle interactions with boats are fatal. So seeing Pennywise survive her injuries and being able to make it to our center was very, very special," said Marika Weber, a veterinary technician at the center. 'It was something that we could fix, heal her up and get her back out into the ocean.'
The center had to transport the turtle to a horse clinic for diagnostic imaging because she was too large to fit inside more common CT machines. It was there that the team discovered she was full of eggs.
With sea turtle nesting season underway, Pennywise has the chance to lay her eggs and continue her vital role in the marine ecosystem.
'It was a really exciting day," Weber said. 'We had the community — our whole team here at the hospital, all the departments out there — to wish her well.'
Because nesting season in Florida runs from March 1 to Oct. 31, center officials are encouraging boaters to slow down and to be especially mindful in what they refer to as the sea turtle protection zone, which extends a mile (1.6 kilometers) off the coast.
All sea turtles are considered endangered or threatened species.

Health warning issued as source of serious bacteria outbreak revealed

Public health officials have issued a warning regarding an outbreak of Campylobacter and E. coli linked to raw milk from an unnamed farm in Florida. The outbreak has affected 21 individuals, including six children under 10, resulting in seven hospitalisations and two severe complications. The Florida Department of Health expressed concerns about sanitation practices at the implicated farm, noting that raw milk is only legally sold for non-human consumption in the state. Federal health agencies, including the CDC and FDA, strongly advise against consuming raw milk due to significant health risks from various pathogens, emphasising that pasteurisation eliminates these dangers. Despite scientific consensus on the risks, raw milk has gained popularity among some groups, with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. being a consumer, though his administration has not delivered the regulatory changes raw milk advocates hoped for.

Stomach-churning moment brown SEWAGE explodes from ceiling at America's busiest airport

Disgusting video appears to show sewage water leaking from the ceiling of America's busiest airport on Monday. The stomach-churning footage, taken by Jamaal Carlos Jr., shows the murky water exploding through a ceiling panel at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The gushing water stunned travelers who were trying to pass through the terminal. Some even seemed to cover their noses in a desperate attempt to shield themselves from the putrid smell. Carlos Jr. told 11 Alive the incident happened while he was waiting for his delayed flight from Atlanta, Georgia to Dallas, Texas. 'As we're waiting, we see water just pouring from the ceiling. It had been pouring consistently for maybe 10 to 15 seconds,' he recounted. 'And it just progressively got worse. The ceiling fell through and it stinks so bad.' He added that he saw debris falling from the ceiling, and claimed it took about five to 10 minutes for crews to respond and rope off the area with yellow caution tape. 'Even after it poured... I thought they would get buckets or do something, but people were walking through it,' Carlos said. Eventually, airport officials rerouted everyone in an effort to avoid the area, and the Lower North Checkpoint was temporarily closed, according to Fox 5. 'It's crazy,' Carlos said. 'So they moved our gate... we were just so close to it, so they moved us a little bit further, but you could still smell it two or three gates down.' Airport officials say they are now investigating what may have caused the leak. 'The affected area has been contained and remediation crews are actively working to clean and sanitize the space,' a spokesperson for the airport told 11 Alive. He added that customer service representatives are rerouting passengers around the area 'to ensure minimal disruption' and emergency medical crews were deployed as a precaution. 'There is no impact to overall airport operations,' the spokesman said.

US farm agency allows six more states to bar some items from food aid

WASHINGTON, Aug 4 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Monday allowed six additional states to bar participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program from using their benefits to buy certain processed foods, such as sodas and candy. The SNAP waivers for West Virginia, Florida, Colorado, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas amend the statutory definition of food for purchase and put an end to the subsidization of popular types of junk food beginning in 2026. The administration of President Donald Trump has encouraged all states to take such measures as part of its "Make America Healthy Again" initiative, named for the social movement led by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The USDA had so far signed waivers to allow six states — Arkansas, Idaho, Utah, Iowa, Indiana and Nebraska — to place similar purchasing restrictions on SNAP recipients. "I hope to see all 50 states join this bold commonsense approach. For too long, the root causes of our chronic disease epidemic have been addressed with lip service only," said the U.S. Food and Drug Commissioner Marty Makary. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced the additional waivers at an event at the USDA headquarters in Washington. "These state waivers promote healthier options for families in need," said Secretary Rollins. More than 42 million people receive SNAP benefits, sometimes called food stamps, as part of the nation's largest anti-hunger program. The massive tax cut and spending bill signed by President Trump in July makes significant changes to the SNAP program, including expanding work requirements and shifting more spending for the program to states.
