Emma Raducanu beats Maria Sakkari and the heat to reach Washington last four

The Guardian2 days ago
Emma Raducanu booked her place in the semi-finals of the Washington Open for the first time with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Greece's Maria Sakkari on a day where both players had to battle high temperatures.
After losing the opening game, Raducanu dropped serve but managed to break straight back. Raducanu broke again to make it 4-3 courtesy of a scuffed drop-volley by Sakkari, who fought back once more following another double fault by the Briton. After getting her nose in front again, Raducanu held serve to take the opening set.
The 22-year-old was looking to continue her impressive streak over the Greek player on her 30th birthday but Sakkari, who beat Katie Boulter earlier in the tournament, took a 4-2 lead in the second set. Temperatures of up to 36C took their toll as a physio was called on to the court to check on Raducanu. However, the break in play reinvigorated the 2021 US Open winner and she won five successive games to book her slot in the final four in two hours and 10 minutes.
'My confidence has been building since Miami,' said Raducanu. 'The amount of work I'm doing behind the scenes, to have that in the locker and banked; you know you've done it, it takes a little pressure off the results.
'I'm really pleased today, Maria played a really good match and I think these conditions suit the jumpiness of her game. I'm really happy that I toughed it out.'
Raducanu will face either Clara Tauson or Anna Kalinskaya for a place in the final.

Report: Dolphins, Minkah Fitzpatrick agree to reworked deal

July 27 - The Miami Dolphins and All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick agreed to a reworked contract, ESPN reported on Sunday. Fitzpatrick will receive a $16.435 million signing bonus and Miami will save $11 million against the 2025 salary cap, per the report. The Dolphins acquired Fitzpatrick from Pittsburgh last month in a trade that sent cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith to the Steelers. Fitzpatrick signed a four-year, $73.6 million extension with the Steelers in 2022 and hopes to eventually sign a long-term deal with Miami, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus. "We are comfortable with this commitment to Minkah as we continue to work with the Dolphins on a multiyear extension," Rosenhaus told ESPN on Sunday. Fitzpatrick, 28, is a five-time Pro Bowl and three-time All-Pro selection who launched his career in Miami as a first-round pick (11th overall) in the 2018 NFL Draft. Fitzpatrick recorded 96 tackles and one interception in 17 starts last season. He has 20 picks, 54 passes defensed and 608 tackles in 106 career games (101 starts) with the Dolphins (2018-19) and Steelers. --Field Level Media

Dodgers activate RHP Blake Treinen from injured list

July 27 - The Los Angeles Dodgers activated reliever Blake Treinen from the 60-day injured list on Sunday. The 37-year-old right-hander has been out since mid-April with right forearm tightness. He was 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA and two saves in eight appearances before the injury. Treinen made the All-Star team with the then-Oakland Athletics in 2018 and won World Series championships with the Dodgers in 2020 and 2024. He is 43-36 with a 2.79 ERA and 82 saves in 507 career games (seven starts) with the Washington Nationals (2014-17), Athletics (2017-19) and Dodgers. Treinen missed the 2023 season following shoulder surgery. The Dodgers also recalled southpaw Justin Wrobleski and optioned right-handers Will Klein and Edgardo Henriquez to Triple-A Oklahoma City. --Field Level Media
