Anthropic rolls out voice mode for Claude
The voice assistant will be powered by Anthropic's latest Claude Sonnet 4 model.
A promo video clip posted by the company showed that users can ask Claude via voice mode to access apps like Gmail, Google Docs and Google Calendars to check what meetings they have set up. It can also search the web and switch between text and voice whenever.
Voice Mode will have five different options for users to choose from.
For free users, Claude just has 20-30 voice messages while paid users have 'significantly higher' usage limits, a blog posted by the company said. Additionally, only subscribers to the paid plan can connect voice mode with Google Workspace for access to Google apps.

World's fastest internet? Japan creates a new record using standard fibre cables
Japan has pushed the boundaries of internet technology by achieving a new global record in data transmission speed. The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) announced that it reached an internet speed of 1.02 petabits per second (Pbps). This speed allows data transfers so rapid that downloading the entire Netflix library or the English version of Wikipedia would take just one second. For instance, it is 16 million times faster than India's average internet speed, which stands at around 63.55 Mbps. Compared to the United States, Japan's new speed is approximately 3.5 million times quicker based on recent data. The project involved collaboration with Sumitomo Electric and European researchers. They used a specially designed optical fibre cable featuring 19 cores, each the same thickness as current cables, about 0.125 mm. How the Test Was Conducted In the experiment, data signals travelled through 19 loops of cable, each measuring 86.1 kilometres, repeated 21 times, making a total distance of 1,808 kilometres. The system handled 180 separate data streams simultaneously, pushing the data transfer rate to a record 1.86 exabits per second per km. The team employed advanced transmitters, receivers, and related technology to reach these speeds. What This Means for the Future According to reports, this capacity means users could download the entire English Wikipedia, roughly 100 GB, 10,000 times in just one second. It would also allow instant downloads of high-resolution 8K videos. While NICT has not provided a timeline for public deployment, this record shows significant progress in optical fibre technology and the potential for future internet capabilities worldwide.

China's Moonshot AI releases open-source model to reclaim market position
Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot AI released a new open-source AI model on Friday, joining a wave of similar releases from local rivals, as it seeks to reclaim its position in the competitive domestic market. The model, called Kimi K2, features enhanced coding capabilities and excels at general agent tasks and tool integration, allowing it to break down complex tasks more effectively, the company said in a statement. Moonshot claimed the model outperforms mainstream open-source models in some areas, including DeepSeek's V3, and rival capabilities of leading U.S. models such as those from Anthropic in certain functions such as coding. The release follows a trend among Chinese companies toward open-sourcing AI models, contrasting with many U.S. tech giants like OpenAI and Google that keep their most advanced AI models proprietary. Some American firms, including Meta Platforms , have also released open-source models. Open-sourcing allows developers to showcase their technological capabilities and expand developer communities as well as their global influence, a strategy likely to help China counter U.S. efforts to limit Beijing's tech progress. Other Chinese companies that have released open-source models include DeepSeek, Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu. Founded in 2023 by Tsinghua University graduate Yang Zhilin, Moonshot is among China's prominent AI startups and is backed by internet giants including Alibaba. The company gained prominence in 2024 when users flocked to its platform for its long-text analysis capabilities and AI search functions. However, its standing has declined this year following DeepSeek's release of low-cost models, including the R1 model launched in January that disrupted the global AI industry. Moonshot's Kimi application ranked third in monthly active users last August but dropped to seventh place by June, according to a Chinese website that tracks AI products.
