Mumbai City to retire Jersey No. 29 to honour departing Bipin Singh

The Hindu31-05-2025
Mumbai City will retire jersey number 29 in honour of Bipin Singh, who will leave the Indian Super League club when his contract expires on Saturday, the club announced.
With 158 appearances and 28 goals, Bipin departs as the most capped player in Mumbai City history. The winger is set to join East Bengal ahead of the next season, as reported by Sportstar.
'It's hard to say goodbye, but I leave with nothing but gratitude in my heart,' Bipin said. 'Mumbai City has been my home for seven unforgettable years. This club has given me everything. To the fans, teammates, staff, and everyone who's been part of this journey, thank you for the love and belief. Mumbai City will always be a part of me.'
The winger from Manipur joined the Islanders in 2018 after stints with Shillong Lajong and Atletico de Kolkata. During his time with Mumbai City, he won two Indian Super League Cups and two ISL Shields.
Bipin played a crucial role in the club's historic 2020-21 season, when Mumbai became the first team to win both the ISL Cup and Shield in the same year. He also scored the match-winning goal in the final against ATK Mohun Bagan.
He secured his second ISL Cup in the 2023-24 season, scoring the team's second goal in the final. He was also part of the squad that claimed the League Shield in 2022-23.

East Bengal take on Namdhari with quarters spot at stake

1 2 Kolkata: East Bengal FC take on in-form Namdhari FC at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday with a place in the Durand Cup quarterfinals at stake. Namdhari under Argentine coach Fernando Capobianco are currently topping Group A with back-to-back wins. East Bengal, on the other hand, have played only once, starting their campaign with a comfortable 5-0 rout of South United FC. Six group winners and two second-best teams will advance to the quarterfinals. However, given the tournament's format, head-to-head count may play a significant role in determining which team will make the knock-out stage. East Bengal can also advance as the group topper with a win against the I-League side because of the head-to-head rule. South United and Indian Air Force have one point each from two matches and are out of the reckoning. "It's true that our team is in better conditions than the first game. But let's go game by game. Namdhari have won two matches and have six points. So it's important for us to get the win tomorrow because there can be a head-to-head (situation)," East Bengal coach Oscar Bruzon told reporters before supervising the team's practice session on Tuesday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 25 of the Best Cities to Live In Undo Key midfielder Souvik Chakrabarti is set to return but PV Vishnu will continue to be sidelined because of an injury. All eyes will also be on whether newcomers Moroccan forward Hamid Ahadad and Argentine defender Kevin Sibille would be used in the match. Bruzon, however, made it clear that participation of the players would depend on match situations. "This is preseason and we need to be smart in using the players," he said.

Super League Kerala likely to begin in first week of Oct, no new teams this season

1 2 Kochi: The second edition of Super League Kerala is expected to start in the first week of October and conclude by the second week of December, according to SLK CEO Mathew Joseph. Although a tentative schedule has been set, the organizers are waiting for the schedules of other foreign leagues. "We have a new broadcasting partner who also airs some foreign leagues in India. We want to avoid date clashes to maximize viewership for our matches," Joseph explained. In addition to private broadcasters, the organizers are exploring options to air the matches on Doordarshan for free, and they will also be streamed online. Joseph mentioned that renovation work at the Jawahar Corporation Stadium in Kannur, one of the new venues for SLK, is almost complete. "Corporation Stadium in Thrissur is likely to be the second venue, but we have yet to finalize an agreement with the stadium owners," he added. Plans to add two more teams to the league have been postponed for now, but Joseph assured that this expansion will occur in the next edition, as there is no need to rush. Joseph also noted that the current uncertainty in the Indian Super League has not impacted SLK. In fact, he has received inquiries from some ISL player agents. "Unlike the last edition, there won't be a player draft, and teams are signing players independently. So, I have directed the inquiries to the team managements, who will make the decisions," he said.
