Trinity Rodman bursts into tears after stoppage time winner in injury return
Rodman was on the bench to begin the game before entering to the roar of the crowd at Audi Field in the 76th minute. Rodman had not played since 12 April because of a nagging back issue.
Rodman, who won a gold medal with the United States at the Olympics last summer, buried her head in her hands and sobbed after the goal, her first for the Spirit since 15 September last year.
'That was the hardest thing I've had to go through, with the injury and everything. So being back, especially at the home stadium with the crowd behind me, scoring a goal like that, you saw I buried it, was not going to miss it,' she said afterward. 'I'm just really happy to be back. I missed the team, I missed doing what I love, so just joy.'
The Spirit (8-4-2) moved into second place in the standings with the victory as the team returned from the league's six-week summer break. The Orlando Pride hosted the Utah Royals in Sunday's late match.
The Thorns (6-4-4) had won their last two matches before the break.
Gift Monday put the Spirit in front in the 17th minute, taking a well-placed cross from Rosemonde Kouassi and easily putting it past Thorns goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold. Monday has five goals this season.
Although the Spirit dominated early on, Portland tied it up in first-half stoppage time on Olivia Moultrie's bolt from the top of the box.

Adrián González, who was the Spirit's interim head coach last year before Jonatan Girladez took over last summer, became the team's permanent head coach last month during the NWSL break when Giraldez was named coach of Lyon in France's top league.
Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury surpassed former Spirit player Tori Huster for most minutes played with the club in the second half.

Nicki Minaj offers controversial NFL star $10m to fight her husband amid ugly online feud
Verbal sparring on social media has led to threats of fighting between a rap icon and a former NFL star over one of the biggest contract disputes in the sport. The Dallas Cowboys are in something of a standoff with star pass rusher Micah Parsons as negotiations on an extension continue to drag on. Parsons has even gone so far as to demand a trade away from Dallas for the lack of advancement on this front. In turn, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has blamed Parsons' representation - Roc Nation Sports - for the request. Roc Nation Sports was founded by Jay-Z and is under his 'Roc Nation' entertainment brand and record label. Jones pointed to a previous negotiation with the agent of Roc Nation client Dez Bryant to show an example of why he doesn't like dealing with representatives. This sparked Dez and Roc Nation to publicly deny the allegations. But it also attracted the attention of rap star Nicki Minaj - who has been in something of a beef with Roc Nation for years. Minaj hasn't replied. Minaj, who says she is owed money by Roc Nation, decided to insert herself into this football feud by replying to one of Bryant's posts. The pair traded GIFs from the 'Saw' horror movie franchise before Minaj suggested she has plenty of stories about the company, Jay-Z, and the company's executives. Bryant then responded with a video asking her to 'leave me out of' her beef with the company, saying 'I don't want no problems. I'm a huge fan. I hope you're having a great day.' Minaj didn't return the favor. In two separate tweets, she continued to bring up past indiscretions - including a time when Bryant allegedly assaulted his own mother. The former Cowboys pass catcher retorted, saying he never went to jail and didn't hit his mother, before bringing Minaj's husband - Kenneth Petty - into the conversation. Petty was previously sentenced to one-year of house arrest for failing to register as a sex offender stemming from a first-degree attempted rape in April 1995. In response, the 'Superbass' songstress escalated things further: 'I'm so happy you brought this up. I'll give you 10 million in cash if you'd come & fight him since you BEAT UR OWN MOM.' Bryant accepted the offer: 'I've been lied on my whole career so I'm not trying to hear all of that s**t..I thought we was speaking facts.. I don't play all of that funny s**t... go get that 10 million in cash.. I'll stomp that n**** out right in front of you.. and it's ROC for life b***h'. Minaj has not responded to Bryant's acceptance of her offer, but has continued to tweet about him and re-tweet her fans' shade thrown at the former wide receiver.

De'Aaron Fox set to sign eye-watering $229m contract as he becomes one of league's top earners
De'Aaron Fox has agreed to an eye-watering maximum contract extension with the Spurs, according to a report. Fox, 27, is a one-time All-Star selection and was traded to San Antonio last February. And the organization has now invested in him even further as he agreed to a four-year, $229million extension with the team, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Fox is set to earn just over $37million next season in the last year of the five year, $163million deal he previously signed with the Kings. However, his new deal will place him into a new stratosphere financially, as his average annual salary of $57.25million will be the third-highest in the league.
