Rijiju seeks report from I&B Ministry on Arunachal film institute strike

The Hindu23-05-2025
GUWAHATI: Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has sought a report from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry on the circumstances forcing the students of the Film and Television Institute, Arunachal Pradesh (FTI-AP), to go on an indefinite academic strike on May 15.
The FTI-AP, currently managed by the Kolkata-based Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute,
is at Jote in the Frontier State's Papum Pare district. The area, 24 km from the State's capital, Itanagar, is under the Arunachal West Lok Sabha constituency that Mr. Rijiju represents.
He said that the Joint Secretary of the I&B Ministry was asked to proceed to Jote on Friday (May 23, 2025) after he sought a report on the goings-on in the FTI-AP.
'I have received a preliminary report in this regard. The students have raised genuine issues, and they should be addressed. I have been informed that a meeting between FTI-AP officials and the local administration is being planned. I hope the concerns raised by the students are addressed soon,' Mr. Rijiju told Itanagar-based journalists.
State government officials said the meeting of all the stakeholders, including senior officials from the Department of Information and Public Relations and the Deputy Commissioner of Papum Pare, would be held soon.
Mr. Rijiju had initiated the FTI-AP almost a decade ago when he was the Minister of State for Home at the Centre. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone eight years ago.
Classes for two-year postgraduate diploma courses in acting, screenwriting, and documentary cinema started in March this year, five months after the three-stage admission process for the first batch was completed. The institute took 14 faculty members on board, but the classes did not commence.

India Welcomes US Support in Targeting Pahalgam Attack Group

India US news: India welcomed the US move to list The Resistance Front (TRF), responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack, as a terrorist organisation on Friday, terming it a 'reaffirmation of our common counter-terrorism goals.' External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in a post on X, appreciated the efforts of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his department for designating the TRF - a shadow group of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group - as a terror group. "A strong affirmation of India-US counter-terrorism cooperation. Appreciate @SecRubio and @StateDept for designating TRF-a Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) proxy-as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). The outfit had claimed responsibility for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. The authorities said they would not allow any space to the terrorists. #OpSindoor." he said on X. In a separate statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said: "India has consistently emphasized the need for global cooperation in the fight against terrorism and the dismantling of terror infrastructure. The designation of The Resistance Front terrorist organisation is a timely and important step reflecting the deep cooperation between India and the United States on counter-terrorism." The Resistance Front on April 22 said it was responsible for the attack at Baisaran, a tourist spot in Pahalgam also known as 'mini Switzerland'. 25 tourists, including a Nepali tourist, died in the attack. In a statement on Thursday, Mr Rubio announced the Department of State's decision to add the TRF under the "Foreign Terrorist Organisation" and "Specially Designated Global Terrorist". "These actions taken by the Department of State demonstrates the Trump Administration's commitment to protecting our national security interests, countering terrorism, and enforcing President Trump's call for justice for the Pahalgam attack," the statement said. 'TRF and its aliases are now also designated under LeT's designation as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) under the Immigration and Nationality Act and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) under Executive Order 13224. The Department of State has revalidated the FTO designation of LeT, and all amendments to that designation will be effective upon publication in the Federal Register,' it added.

Smart meter scam allegations: Minister faces legal heat

Bengaluru: Energy Minister KJ George is facing fresh trouble over the alleged irregularities in the procurement of smart electricity meters. BJP legislators Dr. C.N. Ashwath Narayan, S.R. Vishwanath, and Dheeraj Muniraju have filed a private complaint in the Special Court for People's Representatives, escalating their earlier complaint filed with the Lokayukta. The BJP has accused the Energy Department of serious corruption, alleging that a massive contract worth ₹10,000 crore was unfairly awarded to Davanagere-based Rajashree Electricals, sidelining other eligible companies. The complaint claims that companies were deliberately prevented from participating in the tender, with smart meters being procured at highly inflated prices—reportedly sold to consumers at ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 while they are available at ₹900 in other states. Senior advocate Lakshmi Iyengar, representing the complainants, argued that this was a major scam. She stated that a global tender should have been floated for such a large-scale project under the RDSS scheme, but instead, Rajashree Electricals, which handled just ₹354 crore worth of business, was awarded a ₹5,296 crore, 10-year contract. The tender was projected as a ₹997 crore deal to downplay its scale, she added. Though the tender was meant only for BESCOM, the same smart meters were reportedly extended to other ESCOMs without proper authorization—raising concerns of procedural violations. The BJP leaders have also approached the Governor, requesting permission for investigation, and accused the Lokayukta police of failing to act despite their initial complaint. The special court, presided over by Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat, has taken up the matter and is expected to decide today on whether to admit the private complaint for investigation.

Victim of overtourism: Mexico City vows to tackle gentrification as protests erupt against rent hikes

Demonstrators took to the streets of Mexico City to raise their voices against the government's efforts to attract digital nomads who take residency in houses once occupied by locals, who were pushed out of their accommodation due to high prices read more A demonstrator hangs signs against gentrification outside a news conference by Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada on regulating rental housing prices at the city government house in Mexico City, Wednesday, July 16, 2025. AP The administration in Mexico City has announced a 14-point plan to tackle gentrification, which has skyrocketed the prices of housing for urban dwellers. The move came after the city was rocked by violent protests earlier this month against mass tourism and an increase in foreigners, often called 'digital nomads,' who live temporarily in the country's capital. What fueled the protests? Demonstrators took to the streets of Mexico City to raise their voices against the government's efforts to attract digital nomads who take residency in houses once occupied by locals, who were pushed out of their accommodation due to high prices. Hundreds of people marched in neighbourhoods popular with tourists, but the demonstration turned violent when a small number of people began smashing storefronts and harassing foreigners. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, on the other hand, said that the protests were fueled by xenophobia. 'The xenophobic displays seen at that protest have to be condemned. No one should be able to say 'any nationality get out of our country' even over a legitimate problem like gentrification,' she said. Many Mexicans have complained about being priced out of their neighbourhoods — in part because of a move made by Sheinbaum in 2022, when she was the Mexico City mayor and signed an agreement with Airbnb and UNESCO to boost tourism and attract digital nomads despite concern over the impact short-term rentals could have. What has the govt promised? After weeks of fierce protests, Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada said that officials will chart out a plan to control rent prices, strike a balance between the rights and obligations of landlords and tenants and ensure that locals are not displaced. 'The issue of gentrification is one of the most important issues in the city today, but it is not new either. It is not only an issue for the city, but also for the entire world, and it means the displacement of thousands of families,' Brugada said. Brugada said on Wednesday that an 'objective and rigorous methodology' will be developed to regulate temporary housing rentals, aiming to prevent resident displacement and avoid 'the loss of the community's roots and identity.'
