I had no idea how brutal traveling during the first trimester of pregnancy would be. Here's how I got through nausea, fatigue, and more.
A nausea kit, flexible mindset, and supportive shoes saved me.
Travel doesn't have to be canceled in pregnancy, but it does require smarter planning.
When I saw those two pink lines pop up, my first thought wasn't baby names — it was: Oh no, I have so much travel coming up.
As a travel writer, there are some months when I'm on the road more than at home. When I took the test, I had six trips planned and more in the works, and I needed to be on my game, but nothing prepared me for how brutal the first trimester would be.
I was quickly humbled when, at seven weeks pregnant, I hopped on a seemingly easy 4.5-hour flight to Aruba. The nausea, bone-deep fatigue, and sensory overload made it feel more like a blur of motion sickness and mental math: Where's the nearest bathroom? What can I eat that won't make me sick? How long until I can nap?
As someone whose identity is rooted in movement and independence, I feared pregnancy might derail my career — or worse, my sense of self.
But instead, this trip taught me that travel didn't have to stop. I just had to change how I do it. After a lot of research, these seven things helped me survive traveling during the first trimester and beyond.
Book an aisle seat
I used to be a window-seat loyalist, but the constant need to pee and waves of nausea don't mix well with being trapped behind a sleeping seatmate.
Now, I book aisle seats for the freedom to get up and use the bathroom as often as I need to, stretch, or escape the smell of someone's airport sandwich.
Tell travel companions early to ease anxiety
Outdated advice says to wait until 12 weeks to tell people, but I was struggling, so I told my fellow travelers (even before some of my family) and immediately felt relieved.
Instead of pushing through silently, I had a built-in cheer squad. They hyped me up, celebrated with me, and gave me detailed reviews of all the Aruban wine and ceviche that I could only stare at longingly.
Pack a 'nausea kit' and keep it within arm's reach

I carried a self-made "nausea kit" everywhere: sour candies (green apple Preggie Pop Drops saved me), all-natural Dramamine, a menthol inhaler, anti-nausea wristbands, and yes — travel barf bags. I didn't use the bags because the other tools worked, but having them eased my anxiety.
Stop pretending you're not exhausted
I tried to keep up with the group even though I was crashing. Eventually, I let go of the pressure to be "on" and participated in core activities, but rested when I could — even if that meant skipping the beach, pool, or happy hour.
It helped that I had already shared that I was pregnant. I didn't feel worried that the group thought I was antisocial, and I could nap without worrying that I was missing out on finding my next story angle.
FOMO is real, but staying healthy for yourself and your growing baby is more important.
Check menus and don't skip the snack stash
Before heading out to meals, I checked menus online to see what I would tolerate best and what checked off all the pregnancy-safe boxes.
I also kept a stash of pregnancy-safe snacks in my bag — granola bars, pretzels, Saltines, and dried edamame for protein — in case I couldn't eat anything on the menu or got hungry outside mealtime.
Luckily, Aruba's tap water is totally safe, which also gave me peace of mind. If you have the option, you may want to consider food safety when choosing travel locales in early pregnancy since you're already feeling sick enough.
Wear the right shoes, even if they're ugly
Your body is already working overtime — now's not the time to break in new sandals or suffer through long walks in unsupportive flats.
After day one, which ended in very swollen feet, I swapped style for Dr. Scholl's sneakers and left all the cute pairs of shoes I'd brought with the best intentions in my suitcase.
Experiment to find what works for you, but try not to overpack
I packed extra books to read during downtime, but napped during every free moment. The mosquito-repellent bands I brought gave me headaches, and I didn't see one mosquito on the entire island. My pregnancy pillow took up half the suitcase and never left it.
Try things out at home first to see if it's worth it. And remember: You're not prepping for Everest (that is, unless you are!). You're just trying to get through TSA or a long car ride without throwing up.
First-trimester travel is gritty, humbling, and full of trial and error. But it also showed me I'm more adaptable than I thought. I'm not losing my identity as a traveler. I'm expanding it. And that feels like the best kind of preparation for what's ahead.

Need a reason to take a vacation? At Olipop, employees don't have a choice. The prebiotic soda brand valued at $1.85 billion recently launched a program requiring its staff of roughly 220 to take at least one full week of PTO. It's also raffling off a $1,000 stipend to four employees each month from June to September to spend on their vacation. "I have no concern that our employees, writ large, should be able to afford a vacation, but things are expensive, right?" Olipop CEO Ben Goodwin told Business Insider, adding that he wants to send an "ultra clear" message about Olipop's workplace. The company said the "Summer Recharge" initiative is intended to prevent burnout, boost performance, and model a healthier relationship with PTO. Olipop CEO Ben Goodwin said the idea came about after the company launched a summer program for customers to win a soda-inspired hotel suites or one of 5,000 influencer-style PR Boxes for just five cents. After seeing data about US workers not using all their allotted PTO, Goodwin decided to create a similar program for Olipop's employees. A survey published by Eagle Hill Consulting last November found that 48% of US employees anticipated having unused vacation days by the end of the year, and over one-third of respondents said they hadn't taken a vacation at all in the past year. 85% of the 1,387 survey respondents said they would support a requirement to use a minimum number of vacation days a year. Olipop offers unlimited time off. Goodwin said that while unlimited PTO can give employees a sense of freedom, these sorts of policies can lead to employees taking less time off. That notion "was unacceptable," he said and he didn't want it happening at his company. Goodwin said it's "really important" that the company effectively facilitates employees' work-life balance. He says that Olipop's employees are hard workers and that, since its founding in 2018, he can count on one hand the number of employees who haven't pulled their weight. Goodwin described the Olipop work environment as "intense" and said the staff is competitive and mission-oriented. Last year alone, the company had nearly 400,000 applicants, he said. While Goodwin invests heavily in employee wellness, he said he is still working on his own ability to disconnect from his job. "I have to take somewhat extreme measures to really, like, take a breather," Goodwin said, adding that he needs to leave the country to detach himself. Goodwin said that Olipop has experienced triple-digit growth nearly every year since its inception, and he has to maintain his performance by following routines like exercise and therapy. Mandatory summer vacation isn't the only perk Olipop offers. Rather than investing in office facilities, Olipop runs remotely and pays significant costs in employee benefits and perks. The company pays for employees to have a gold PPO plan and covers 95% of insurance costs, Goodwin said. Olipop also offers department off-sites, a party at the end of the year with a DJ and a hotel stay, new hire orientations, and a program for leadership called Olipop Leadership University. As a relatively small company in a high-growth phase, Goodwin said he has no plans to pull back these perks. In fact, he said he's in active discussions with Olipop's new head of people about expanding some initiatives. Goodwin said he's exploring the launch of a "company rainy day fund for employee emergencies." To Goodwin, it's all part of the company's mission to benefit others. He also said it creates incentive for employees to perform better. "How much time do you want to spend using punitive measures to keep your employees in line, and how much do you want to use incentivization and meaning to inspire them in the same direction?" Goodwin said. The CEO added that you can "tell which model we prefer."

An American couple sold their house in California and retired in Malaysia. They love 'not owning anything.'
In the 1970s, Paul and Ellen Eggers taught in Malaysia as volunteers with the US Peace Corps. The experience left a lasting impression, and decades later, as they prepared to retire from their jobs as college professors in California, they decided to return. "I had read an article in Forbes Magazine about people retiring overseas," Ellen, now 70, told Business Insider. "We hadn't really thought a lot about it before, but then one of the places that was listed as very popular and very affordable was Penang in Malaysia." They were familiar with the Southeast Asian country, having returned for vacations over the years, and never forgot how much they enjoyed it. In 2015, with the goal of retiring in the next year or two, the couple spent five weeks in Malaysia to see if it felt right for the next chapter of their lives. "We knew that our income could go a lot farther in Malaysia, and we thought, 'We could actually do this. Why not?'" Ellen said. When it was finally time for them to retire, they didn't hesitate to say goodbye to their lives in the US. The couple got rid of almost everything they owned, including two cars, furniture, and hundreds of books, which they donated to their university. "It was a very easy decision for us," Paul, now 71, told BI. Moving across the world It's been seven years since the couple moved to Penang, a state in the northwestern part of Malaysia. They had spent just one weekend there back in the '70s, Paul said. "We didn't really know Penang well at all when we came on our reconnaissance trip, but we liked what we saw, so that made our decision for us." Unlike the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital, they were drawn to Penang for its mix of natural and urban landscapes. Moreover, they didn't want to own a car, and Penang's reliable public transport system made getting around easy. However, the couple's decision to move across the world surprised some of their family and friends back home. They weren't familiar with Malaysia, and weren't sure what to make of it. Paul said. "Some of them thought we were nuts. I think some of them still do, seven years later," Ellen said. Not having children of their own made the move simpler. "I think it would be more difficult if you had children and grandchildren — although many of our friends do, and they make it work just fine with visits," Ellen said. The couple is on the Malaysia My Second Home, or MM2H, visa program, which was first introduced in 2002 to attract foreigners to retire and live in Malaysia. The most recent rule changes, announced in 2024, included stricter financial requirements, including the need to buy property in Malaysia. Since the couple obtained their visas under an earlier version of the program, they were grandfathered in under the old rules and weren't required to purchase property, Paul said. Back in the US, they owned a 2,000-square-foot home in the Sierra Nevada foothills, which they sold for $290,000 before relocating to Malaysia. Now, they're settled in a three-bedroom beachfront condo — their third home in Penang — which they moved into eight months ago. Rent is 8,000 Malaysian ringgit, or about $1,800, each month. "Honestly, we really like the idea of not owning anything. Not owning a house, not owning a car; it's very freeing," Ellen said. Their complex has a pool, gym, and tennis courts, and they're within walking distance of grocery stores and clinics. Georgetown, the capital of Penang, is a 15-minute car ride away. While they don't track every expense month to month, they always keep a close eye on what's coming in and going out. They estimate that their living expenses — inclusive of rent — usually come up to around 12,000 ringgit to 13,000 ringgit, or about $2,800 to $3,060, each month. Retired life in Penang The couple says they're enjoying their retirement in Penang. "Of course, when we were in the US, we were working, so that took up a very big part of the day," Ellen said. "We have much more time for personal hobbies and pastimes. We both read a lot. We try to exercise quite a lot." Paul says their lifestyle in Malaysia isn't that different from the US. "We pretty much do what we did in the States," he added. With one exception — they've learned how to play Mahjong, a tile-based strategy game that's extremely popular all over Asia. "I've met many people through that," Ellen said. "It's a lovely thing that you meet people from all over the world here and think nothing of sitting down at a table with two people from Europe and two people from Australia. It's just so natural." The other friends they've made came through mutual connections, she added. Penang also has an international airport, which makes it easy for them to travel around the region and beyond, including New Zealand and Australia. They recently returned from a cruise in Norway, Paul said. "Malaysia is so accessible to everywhere, not just Southeast Asia. It's easy to get a flight to Europe, and because we are saving so much money here, we can afford to travel," Ellen said. They both speak Malay from living in Malaysia years ago, but Paul says you can easily get by in Penang with just English. Those who want to make a similar move should pay attention to one thing: The heat. "It seems like a minor thing, but a lot of people are quite shocked at the tropical heat and don't realize how careful you have to be with the sun and hydration and things like that," Ellen said. Penang has come to feel like home in the years they've lived here. "We're just very familiar with Malaysian lifestyle, the language, the customs, and so on," Paul said. "In fact, the things that are different are the things that we love. We like the food, the nature, the climate, and the friendliness of Malaysians," Ellen added. "And no snow."

These goldilocks leases are now generating better returns than short-term rentals while simultaneously complying with local regulations. This trend, which is a winner for real estate investors, but still has the potential to leave traditional renters out in the cold, was recently profiled in Business Insider. Property owner Zeona McIntyre discovered the potential of mid-term leases during the COVID pandemic. When the pandemic set in, the chaos caused by stay-at-home orders and travel restrictions led to her losing nearly all her Airbnb bookings. 'I was really open to doing whatever I needed to get my properties rented,' she told Business Insider. McIntyre found success on a website called Furnish Finder. The platform focused on offering leases longer than 30 days but less than one year to working professionals. It turned out to be the happy medium between Airbnb and being a traditional long-term landlord. 'I realized there are tons of people looking all the time for longer stays, and longer stays are kind of awesome because people don't need as much from you. They're OK to go buy their own toilet paper and change the batteries because they're living there,' she said. It was a classic case of necessity being the mother of invention, and the mid-term rental business was so good to McIntyre that she converted all of her income properties to the new format. 'My bread-and-butter is these mid-term rentals,' said McIntyre. 'I want a longer tenant in there, and I don't want to have to think about it for three months.' Business Insider says she is not alone in discovering the potential advantages of mid-term rentals. Other landlords are beginning to realize that taking this middle-of-the-road approach offers a host of potential advantages. The flexibility aspect of mid-term leases and the fact that tenants tended to be working professionals make life easier for both the landlord and the neighbors of the rental unit. On top of that, mid-term landlords are discovering that they have a lot more leeway to operate without government oversight. According to Business Insider, many short-term rental bans or registration requirements apply to properties offering stays of less than 30 days. Short-term rental registration also often included high fees and tax surcharges. Other cities and local governments limited the number of short-term rentals that could exist in a given area. In most cases, mid-term leases are not subject to these kinds of restrictions. That's why McIntyre told Business Insider she believes that mid-term rentals are the "sweet spot of real estate investing." She went so far as to say she considers them to be 'a whole different vibe from short-term rentals, and way less stressful.' Many short-term rental landlords can attest to the high levels of detail and stress that go hand in hand with the high rents. When you factor that in with the reduced regulatory picture, McIntyre's point becomes even clearer. 'Short-term rentals have been under scrutiny, and the ever-tightening regulations are constantly changing,' she said to Business Insider. 'But there is sort of this magic number that, as soon as a listing is over 30 days, these rentals get classified into a long-term rental bucket, and then you don't have the extra taxes or have to have a short-term rental permit."
