Government of Canada expanding high-speed Internet access in Saskatchewan Français

Federal investment of up to $105 million will connect more than 6,500 homes PRINCE ALBERT, SK, July 4, 2025 /CNW/ - Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada Reliable and affordable high-speed Internet is essential for all Canadians. It enables access to important online resources, connects friends and families, and drives economic growth and innovation. Today, the Honourable Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State (Rural Development), announced up to $105 million in federal funding for three high-speed Internet projects being delivered by Saskatchewan Telecommunications (SaskTel). These projects will bring high-speed Internet access to 6,522 households in 35 rural and remote communities across central and northern Saskatchewan, including over 4,800 Indigenous households. The Government of Canada's investment is provided through the Universal Broadband Fund, a program designed to ensure that Canadians in rural, remote and Indigenous communities have access to reliable high-speed Internet. The government remains on track to meet its goal of providing high-speed Internet to 98% of Canadian households by 2026, and 100% by 2030. With these investments, the government is helping to create new opportunities for rural and remote communities—ensuring that all Canadians, no matter where they live, can fully participate in the digital economy and benefit from everything Canada has to offer. Quotes "In today's day and age, every corner of Saskatchewan should have access to reliable, affordable high-speed Internet—whether that's in Sweetgrass or all the way in Black Lake. Today's announcement of up to $105 million in new funding to connect 6,522 rural households in the province is a major milestone for Saskatchewan. Investments like these create jobs, improve access to health care and online learning services, and keep us connected to our loved ones." – The Honourable Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State (Rural Development) "The Government of Saskatchewan appreciates the federal government's investment to help expand connectivity across the province. These funds will add to the nearly $1 billion that SaskTel has invested to bring fibre-powered Internet connectivity to communities throughout Saskatchewan. These investments are strengthening our communities by delivering the high–speed Internet that families and businesses need to thrive in today's increasingly connected economy." – The Honourable Jeremy Harrison, Minister of Crown Investments Corporation and Minister Responsible for SaskTel "We at SaskTel, Saskatchewan's homegrown communications leader, understand the incredible impact that high-quality and reliable Internet services can have on a home, business and community. We're thrilled to utilize funding from the Universal Broadband Fund to bring the incredible speed and power of our infiNET network to residents and businesses in more than 30 northern and Indigenous communities. For SaskTel, this initiative is not just about delivering fast Internet speeds—it's about supporting local businesses, empowering students, strengthening communities and enriching the lives of our customers." – Charlene Gavel, President and CEO, SaskTel Quick facts Funding for this project was initially highlighted in June 2024. Today's announcement provides details of the 35 Saskatchewan communities that will benefit from improved Internet speeds. Canada's Connectivity Strategy aims to provide all Canadians with access to Internet speeds of at least 50 megabits per second (Mbps) download / 10 Mbps upload. The Universal Broadband Fund is a $3.225 billion investment by the Government of Canada designed to help provide high-speed Internet access to 98% of Canadian households by 2026 and achieve the national target of 100% access by 2030. Today, 95.8% of Canadian households have access to high-speed Internet, compared to just 79% in 2014. In Saskatchewan, 84.4% of households currently have access to high-speed Internet. Since 2015, the Government of Canada has invested more than $215 million in connectivity projects in Saskatchewan. Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit and gender diverse people are more likely to go missing or be murdered than non-Indigenous women. Better connectivity means more tools in moments of danger, helping victims of violence access critical online resources and get help when they need it most. The Government of Canada works in partnership with Internet service providers (ISP) to offer discounted Internet services to eligible Canadians through the Connecting Families Initiative. SaskTel is a participating ISP. Associated links Follow Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada on social media. Companies pull animal welfare campaigns in Calgary

CALGARY, AB, July 4, 2025 /CNW/ - Animal protection organizations are raising the alarm about mounting censorship efforts by major advertising companies and media groups as the Calgary Stampede kicks off. While the Stampede is heavily promoted across Canada as a national celebration, the darker side of its animal events is increasingly hidden from public view. When animals are inevitably injured or killed—a grim annual tradition —the live broadcast quickly cuts away, leaving announcers to fill the silence while the arena is cleared. Increasingly, animal welfare advocates say that corporate advertising companies are going further to block even mild criticism from reaching the public. This year, the Vancouver Humane Society (VHS) attempted to run a billboard with Astral Media Outdoor, owned by Bell Media. The billboard would have been placed along the Stampede parade route, pointing out that distressing moments—like when a rope tightens around a calf's neck—are typically edited out of rodeo highlights. Sharing this fact proved too much for Bell Media, despite initially approving the sign. Just days before launch, Bell Media abruptly demanded last-minute changes before cancelling the billboard altogether. The company rejected the VHS's photo-based ads in 2024, while Pattison Outdoor Advertising, another major ad company, refused all "animal advocacy advertising." After Bell withdrew, other approved ad campaigns began to unravel. Rogers Media, which had sent radio ad contracts and collaborated on script development, reversed course, stating that the ads would "diminish the value of the Rogers' brands." The Calgary Stampede is one of Rogers Sports & Media's properties, a representative noted. RedPoint Media Group, which had agreed to place online ads in Avenue Calgary, also rejected designs mentioning animal welfare concerns and offered to run general ads about the VHS instead. Their production team said they do not accept "political" messaging—despite one of the rejected ads stating only: "Like dogs, calves suffer stress and injuries from rough handling." "We've been advocating for an end to cruel practices at the Calgary Stampede for decades, but this year we've had three advertising companies backtrack on ads with signed contracts," said VHS Communications Director Chantelle Archambault. "We're extremely concerned that companies are keeping animal welfare messaging from reaching the public." "These moves to silence even mild criticism show an alarming imbalance, where an event that routinely sees animal deaths and injuries is shielded from scrutiny by powerful corporations," said Alexandra Pester, Calgary-based staff lawyer at Animal Justice. "Frankly it's also insulting to Calgarians, suggesting they can't be trusted to make up their own minds about controversial events."

BIXI launches bike-sharing service in Sherbrooke

SHERBROOKE, QC, July 4, 2025 /CNW/ - BIXI, in collaboration with the Société de transport de Sherbrooke (STS) and the City of Sherbrooke, is proud to announce the launch of the region's first bike-sharing service. The first phase will consist of 25 stations equipped with 255 bikes, 80% of which will be electric. This deployment offers Sherbrooke residents a sustainable, active, and accessible mode of transportation. This project is made possible thanks to a $1,105,581 financial contribution from the Quebec government as part of the Financial Assistance Program for the Development of Self-Service Bike Sharing (OVLIS) for the 2021-2022 fiscal year, a program stemming from the Sustainable Mobility Policy – 2030. At an event held today in Sherbrooke attended by Mayor Évelyne Beaudin, STS Chair Laure Letarte-Lavoie, and other local officials, BIXI officially launched the service. A well-equipped network geared to the region's needs The BIXI Sherbrooke network was designed to meet the specific requirements of the region, with stations strategically located near transportation hubs, educational institutions such as the University of Sherbrooke and Cégep de Sherbrooke, parks, and commercial areas. The number of stations and bikes will increase in the coming years. Users will be able to take advantage of flexible pricing, with monthly subscriptions as well as one-way trips for occasional travel. "I am pleased to see that this bike-sharing service is generating enthusiasm among the public. Our government remains an important partner in ensuring better access to various modes of transportation across all regions of Quebec. The project launched today will have a positive impact on the mobility and quality of life of our citizens in Estrie, which is my goal!" - Geneviève Guilbault, Minister of Transportation and Sustainable Mobility "It is a great pleasure to welcome BIXI to Sherbrooke! This service enhances our sustainable transportation options and makes our downtown even more attractive by facilitating access to businesses, contributing to the local economy. With electric bikes, even our hilly terrain becomes more welcoming! And this is just the beginning, with our cycling network constantly improving to make Sherbrooke even more welcoming for cyclists, both local and from elsewhere." - Évelyne Beaudin, Mayor of Sherbrooke "The rollout of this bike-sharing project fits perfectly with the STS's mission to promote sustainable and integrated mobility in Sherbrooke. By adding bike sharing services to our offering, we are promoting complementary modes of transportation and encouraging Sherbrooke residents to rethink their travel habits, one pedal stroke at a time," said Laure Letarte-Lavoie, President of the STS. "Being part of the large BIXI network means having access to a single app for all cities, enjoying simple pricing and unlimited zone subscriptions.
