Dutch airline KLM announces third route to Amsterdam from Cork Airport for coming winter season
The addition comes as part of the company's expansion of its winter schedule adding 32,000 seats compared to the period in late 2024 and early 2025. The service will not run during the slow part of the winter season from January 4 to February 20, 2026.
KLM said this additional flight from Cork is catering for strong demand for worldwide connectivity via one of Europe's largest hub airports – Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
The airline has been flying routes out of Cork since 2020 and already operates a twice daily flight to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
General Manager of Air France-KLM for the UK and Ireland Jerome Salemi said the increase to three daily KLM flights between Cork and Amsterdam 'highlights once again our commitment to the Munster Region and the south-west of Ireland'.
'This complements our recent announcement of the year-round Air France services between Cork Airport and Paris Charles-de-Gaulle.'
Tara Finn, head of aviation business development and communications at Cork Airport, said the additional 32,330 seats to Amsterdam will 'boost inbound tourism and provide more business and leisure connection options out of Cork'.
'We are delighted with this expansion by KLM and look forward to further growth opportunities with the Air France-KLM group.'

Report: European potato market under ‘severe pressure'
The European potato market is under 'severe pressure' this year, according to the Dutch firm, DCA Market Intelligence. The firm has said that the EU potato area is increasing by 77,000ha to a total of 1.47 million hectares, an increase of 5.5%. It claims that the expansion comes while European exports of French fries, and other frozen potato products, are facing significant challenges. DCA has warned that the potential overproduction of processing potatoes could push the current market 'further out of balance'. The Dutch firm said that Germany, France, The Netherlands, and Belgium – the largest potato-growing countries on the European mainland – now cultivate more than 600,000ha of processing potatoes, a 7.5% increase compared to last year. DCA believes the growth is exceptionally large, and stands out as a considerable portion of the additional area is being grown 'without contracts'. It said that farmers, when planning crops last winter, anticipated strong demand and maximised contract options with processors. However, the open market has since collapsed, and processors have scaled back their contract volumes. According to DCA, the harvest could reach over 25 million tonnes, based on average yields. It said that while drought in parts of Europe will likely prevent a record crop, the balance between supply and demand remains under extreme pressure. DCA As a result of the pressure to the potato processing industry, the European fries industry is in a 'difficult position', the DCA stated. There is competition for the sector from other countries, such as India, China, and Egypt, who are capturing market share in Asia and the Middle East through lower costs and improving product quality. According to DCA, Europe is struggling to 'keep up' with the price pressure. In The Netherlands, the contract price for potatoes now accounts for about 40% of the current trade price for French fries. This has led to processors trying to cut costs, while labour and energy prices remain expensive. The DCA found that global demand for French fries continues to rise, but Europe is playing a 'diminishing' role in the growth. A combination of high production costs, mounting competition from low-cost countries, and a surplus of potatoes is putting pressure on the margins of both processors and grower. DCA believes that French fries will remain widely available, but price drops at northwest European supermarkets or fast-food outlets are unlikely. A spokesperson for DCA told Agriland that all data was collected from various official sources such as Eurostat, and the European Commission, and that calculations were made by the firm's analyst.

Council grants Cork Airport permission to extend car parking facilities
Planning permission has been granted to expand car parking at Cork Airport to help relieve the pressure on existing facilities that are 'regularly at full capacity'. Cork Airport applied for permission in May to add an additional 669 spaces to the Holiday Blue Long-Term Car Park at Cork Airport, increasing the number of spaces on that site by almost one third. A recent Red C research poll had shown that the private car is the 'predominant' mode of transport accessing the airport which was 'unsurprising given the existing public transport provision'. 'The airport is well served by the N27 and also the 226 and the 225 bus routes,' planning documents said. 'These are both hourly services meaning there is a bus to the city every 30 minutes, however they don't commence until 6am and therefore miss staff and the first wave of passengers who need to be at the airport at circa 4.30am. 'The bus service also misses the later arrivals as services cease at midnight. In addition, bus services do not extend into the wider airport catchment.' Cork Airport has just over 4,500 long and short-term parking spaces currently. This includes 633 short-term car parking spaces at the multi-storey car park and a further 1,673 in the Express Red car park. Car parking, therefore, was described as an 'integral and essential part' of the airport's transport infrastructure. The planning document said: 'It is noted that during the recent Easter weekend the car park's occupancy was 101.8%. There were a number of cars parked on kerbs to avoid turning passengers away. 'Given the lack of public transport options, extending the Holiday Blue Car Park needs [to be] prioritised in the short term, in the interests of passenger safety, comfort and convenience.' The planning application received one submission, from the Ballinaspig-Firgrove-Westgate Residents Association, a collection of housing estates off the Curraheen Road in Bishopstown. The residents expressed concerns at increasing air traffic over Bishopstown and said that noise pollution carries health risks.
