The top London theatre shows according to our critics
Where is it? Barbican Centre.
How much is it? £25-£165.
Why go? Fein masterfully balances the musical's two sides – the stand-up-style humour and the dark forshadowing of the Holocaust – by playing it as a sort of absurdist clown show. US star Adam Dannheisser is excellent as a restrained, dignifiede take on milkman protagonist Teyve.

Sydney Sweeney drama: JD Vance addresses American Eagle ad controversy
"My political advice to the Democrats is continue to (call) everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi," Vance joked during an episode of the conservative "Ruthless" podcast on Friday, Aug. 1. "That appears to be their actual strategy." The Nazi party used the pseudoscience of eugenics, which promotes some genetic features as better than others, to justify the killing of Jews and countless other minority groups during the Holocaust. Sydney Sweeney dishes on the best jeans, her favorite rom-com and what's on her playlist American Eagle's campaign, which has spawned a fierce cultural debate, used wordplay to describe Sweeney, 27, as having "good genes," a wordplay to promote the brand's denim jeans. Critics have said the ad blitz amounts to a glorification of whiteness and a dog whistle for racist ideologies. But her supporters have said the ad is meant to be a light-hearted wordplay, defending the "Euphoria" actress and the brand. Sweeney previously told USA TODAY that denim was a staple of her wardrobe, but left out AE in her list of favored brands at the time. "I'm very much a white, plain T-shirt kind of girl. I jump around from a bunch of different brands and that kind of depends on what vibe I want to go for," she said. "I have my Levi's white T-shirts and my Cotton On white T-shirts that are just paired with casual jeans. Jean wise: I mean, I love Levi's, Frame, Agolde." Sydney Sweeney controversy, explained In one of several videos for AE, Sweeney, clad in a denim-on-denim outfit, says: "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color." "My jeans are blue," she says as the camera pans across her blue denim and her blue eyes. Soon after the campaign dropped, people began to sound the alarm on what they saw as a dangerous message about the beauty ideal, race and "good" versus "bad" genes. Vance, though, chalked the whole ordeal up to an overreaction from the "left" and a doubling down on a strategy that he thinks lost the Democrats the 2024 presidential election. Dunkin' ad about 'genetics' draws comparisons to Sydney Sweeney drama "I actually thought that one of the lessons (Democrats) might take is 'we're going to be less crazy.' And the lesson they have apparently taken is 'we're going to attack people as Nazis for thinking Sydney Sweeney is beautiful,'" he said on the podcast. "Great strategy, guys. That's how you're going to win the midterm, especially young American men." The ad's critics, however, argued that a campaign selling jeans to women should not have been shot so clearly from the male gaze. Some consumers were quick to point out what they saw as the regressive nature of the material: A buxom blonde woman drawing attention to her body and employing a sensual tone, they argued, calling back to a stereotypical symbol of a bygone era. "Wasn't she the one who said she didn't want to be seen as an object?" one commenter asked on Sweeney's Instagram page, while another chided: "We can leave Nazi Germany back where it got conquered ty next!!!" Sweeney has not yet spoken out about the controversy, though several prominent members of the GOP have chimed in on her behalf. Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, for instance, took to X on July 29 to blast the left for criticizing the ad. "Wow. Now the crazy Left has come out against beautiful women. I'm sure that will poll well...." he wrote. White House's communications director Steven Cheung, a longtime adviser for President Donald Trump, also maligned the criticism, calling it "cancel culture run amok." "This warped, moronic and dense liberal thinking is a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024," he wrote on X July 29, adding that people are "tired" of this way of thinking. But, when a second ad campaign, this time from Dunkin', dropped featuring the same "genetic" themes, many critics felt vindicated, arguing that it signaled a greater cultural shift toward genetic hierarchy and racism.

Flat in iconic Poirot building up for sale for £190k - but it's not exactly spacious
A studio flat in Barbican, London, is going up for auction later this month with a guide price of £190,000 before fees. Located on Charterhouse Square, the building is instantly recognisable as Whitehaven Mansions, the fictional home of Agatha Christie's famous detective Hercule Poirot. As well as exterior filming, a number of interior shots of the Grade II-listed Art Deco building were used for the programme during its 24 years in production. In 2019, the building was used again for filming, after being selected as a home for one of the leading characters of the Batman spin-off, Pennyworth. Built in 1936 by by Guy Morgan and Partners, the London building features classic Art Deco design and rare amenities for its era, including a rooftop garden with city views, an indoor swimming pool, sauna, gym and communal lounge. The block, which spans nine floors and is home to 120 flats, also has a porter service, a secure entry system and two lifts. Flat 28 Florin Court will appeal to buyers with a love of classic TV, as well as architecture and design. A canny investor could also be drawn to the studio's location and potential. And its City location means it could also be an ideal pied a terre. However, anyone who lives there will have to be comfortable with a small space, as it measures just 209 sq ft, or less than 20 sq m. The current minimum space standard says newly-built homes for one person should be at least 37 sq m. The studio flat is located on the third floor of the curved building. It has a bedroom and living space, and separate kitchenette and bathroom areas. The property has an enviable location, providing easy access to the City of London and the Elizabeth Line. It is close to both Barbican and Farringdon underground stations. The property is held on a 999 year lease from 1 April 2017, with around 991 years unexpired. The studio flat has an EPC rating of C and has not been inspected by Auction House, which is selling the property via auction in August. Viewings for the property are taking place on 1 August between 2.15pm to 2.45pm and on 5 August from 2.15pm to 2.45pm. Potential: Flat 28 Florin Court is going under the hammer with a guide price of £190,000 How to buy at auction Auctions are one area where good deals still come up. Properties sold this way can, in some cases, be substantially cheaper than on the open market. According to Property Auction News, the average price properties sell at auction for is around £166,000. However, properties sold in this way often - though not always - come with added complexities for the buyer. It is therefore important to do as much research as possible before buying any property at auction. Where possible, always visit the property in person before the auction. Do not underestimate how much renovation work or reconfigurations could cost if you are taking on a project property. Read legal documents for the property carefully and, when possible, get advice from a solicitor before heading to the auction. Sometimes, the legal pack includes 'special conditions' that mean you might also be liable to pay an additional three per cent fee to a sales agent. Before submitting any bids, always check what sort of price similar properties in the area have sold for. This will, of course, be harder if it is a more unusual property that you are after. If you do bid, do not get carried away and bid more than you can afford. Most properties bought via auction have a 28-day competition date and home loans for auction properties can be harder to get. How to find a new mortgage Borrowers who need a mortgage because their current fixed rate deal is ending, or they are buying a home, should explore their options as soon as possible. Buy-to-let landlords should also act as soon as they can. Quick mortgage finder links with This is Money's partner L&C > Mortgage rates calculator > Find the right mortgage for you What if I need to remortgage? Borrowers should compare rates, speak to a mortgage broker and be prepared to act. Homeowners can lock in to a new deal six to nine months in advance, often with no obligation to take it. Most mortgage deals allow fees to be added to the loan and only be charged when it is taken out. This means borrowers can secure a rate without paying expensive arrangement fees. Keep in mind that by doing this and not clearing the fee on completion, interest will be paid on the fee amount over the entire term of the loan, so this may not be the best option for everyone. What if I am buying a home? Those with home purchases agreed should also aim to secure rates as soon as possible, so they know exactly what their monthly payments will be. Buyers should avoid overstretching and be aware that house prices may fall, as higher mortgage rates limit people's borrowing ability and buying power. What about buy-to-let landlords Buy-to-let landlords with interest-only mortgages will see a greater jump in monthly costs than homeowners on residential mortgages. This makes remortgaging in plenty of time essential and our partner L&C can help with buy-to-let mortgages too. Listeners' fury after popular US podcast airs vile antisemetic rant while hosts laughed and nodded along
A popular US podcast has come under fire for a shock conversation which involved openly anti-Semitic language including blaming Jewish people for the Holocaust. The Fresh & Fit podcast, hosted by Myron Gaines and Walter Weekes claims to be the number one men's podcast in the world. It has nearly 1.6 million followers on YouTube, where it has been demonetized in the past, and some 372,000 followers on Rumble. The podcast has regularly featured guests such as Andrew Tate and Nick Fuentes. The podcast was live streaming to the right wing video platform Rumble when host Myron Gaines bizarrely asked about their female guests about their views on Hitler. Weeks and Gaines laughed and grinned while the guest began her vile anti-Semitic rant. She replied: 'What if he Jewish did something to the Germans that made them act a certain way, but nobody wants to talk about it. The Jews don't want to take accountability. Other guests agreed, saying 'I'm with you on that one'. The woman then continued: 'They were up to something so the Germans wanted to take them out. It had to be something, the Germans wanted to take them out, all of them. Another guest can be heard saying 'Jews are so fishy' while another replied 'they started it'. The woman continued: 'The Holocaust was the only way he (Hitler) can take out a huge population of Jews all in one setting. 'I already know what is going on, I am not dumb. The Jews did something, they are trying to take back and get repercussions especially from America, from Americans. 'So they have taken over the government and stuff like that Gaines then asked: 'How do we take them down? To which another replied: 'gotta kill them m************' Another guest also whispered: 'Genocide' The guest added: 'Hitler he had the plan, but his plan was too gruesome'. It is profoundly disturbing to see young social media influencers casually rationalize Hitler and the Nazi regime's systematic extermination of six million Jews during the Holocaust. The only thing more terrifying than Holocaust denial is Holocaust glorification. The comfort… — Ritchie Torres (@RitchieTorres) July 25, 2025 Fellow Host Walter Weeks then said: 'Listen, he had to do what he had to do. He was trying to save the world, it just didn't work out. The woman continued: Jews are the reason why the healthcare system and everything around the us in government is collapsing because they are sitting up here stealing away from the American people.' The video was deleted but was later shared by Republican politician Richie Torres. He said: 'It is profoundly disturbing to see young social media influencers casually rationalize Hitler and the Nazi regime's systematic extermination of six million Jews during the Holocaust. 'The only thing more terrifying than Holocaust denial is Holocaust glorification. 'The comfort with which these commentators defend the most evil man ever to roam the earth should send chills down the spine of every decent person.' Democrat Senator Scott Wiener also shared his disgust. He wrote: 'This Fresh & Fit podcast justifies the Holocaust since the Jews 'were up to something so the Germans wanted to take them out.' They claim Jews control the government & health system. And people wonder why anti-Jewish violence is rising.' Hosts Weekes and Gaines are no strangers to controversy, having previous said women in serious relationships should not have Instagram because it's 'a form of cheating'. The duo believe men and women 'are not equals' and it's ok for men to post what they want on Instagram but women in relationships should not be allowed to have an account. They added how 'women want attention and men want sex', and so women shouldn't be 'advertising themselves' as men will act on their options if they have the ability to do so. Gaines also wrote a book titled Why Women Deserve Less, where he wrote that 'All women are whores. The Fresh and Fit podcast has been contacted for comment.
