Fahmi Reza issues letter of demand over ‘travel ban'

(Fahmi Reza pic) PETALING JAYA: Activist and graphic artist Fahmi Reza has issued a letter of demand to the authorities after being prevented from travelling abroad recently, despite no official travel ban in place. The letter, dated June 13 and shared on Fahmi's social media pages, was addressed to Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain, immigration director-general Zakaria Shaaban, and home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
Advertisement According to his lawyer, Yohendra Nadarajan, Fahmi was stopped at KLIA Terminal 2 on June 7 while trying to board a flight to Singapore. Immigration officials at the airport had reportedly told Fahmi to check with Bukit Aman on the travel restriction. The next day, Razarudin was reported as saying there was no travel ban on Fahmi but that his name had been placed on an 'internal movement monitoring list for investigation purposes'. Yohendra said that there is no basis under the law for Fahmi to be added to such a list, adding that Fahmi had previously been told, in 2022 when renewing his passport, that his name had already been removed from any such list. He added that checks on the immigration department's website showed conflicting information, with the Bahasa Melayu version stating he was restricted, but the English version stating he was not. For the record, the department has since acknowledged the discrepancy and said it was conducting a technical review. 'No authority has taken responsibility for the violation of our client's rights on June 7,' Yohendra said. He added that Fahmi is demanding the removal of his name from all monitoring lists, the lifting of any travel restrictions, and compensation, with the amount to be determined. 'If no response is received within seven days from the date of this letter, we will assume the authorities have chosen to maintain our client's name on the listing and a travel restriction is still in effect,' he said. US appeals court keeps bar on Los Angeles federal immigration arrests

Rejecting the Trump administration's request to pause the lower court's order, the three-judge appeals panel ruled that the plaintiffs would likely be able to prove that federal agents had carried out arrests based on peoples' appearance, language and where they lived or worked. President Donald Trump called National Guard troops and U.S. Marines into Los Angeles in June in response to protests against the immigration raids, marking an extraordinary use of military force to support civilian police operations within the United States. The city of Los Angeles and other Southern California municipalities joined a lawsuit filed in June by the American Civil Liberties Union accusing federal agents of using unlawful police tactics such as racial profiling to meet immigration arrest quotas set by the administration. A California judge last month blocked the Trump administration from racially profiling immigrants as it seeks deportation targets and from denying immigrants' right to access to lawyers during their detention. In Friday's unsigned decision, the judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit largely rejected the administration's appeal of the temporary restraining order. The judges agreed with the lower court in blocking federal officials from detaining people based solely on "apparent race or ethnicity," speaking Spanish or accented English, or being at locations such as a "bus stop, car wash, tow yard, day laborer pick up site, agricultural site, etc." The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside business hours. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the order a victory for the city. "The Temporary Restraining Order that has been protecting our communities from immigration agents using racial profiling and other illegal tactics when conducting their cruel and aggressive enforcement raids and sweeps will remain in place for now," she said in a statement. Mohammad Tajsar, senior staff attorney at the ACLU Foundation of Southern California, welcomed the ruling in statement: "This decision is further confirmation that the administration's paramilitary invasion of Los Angeles violated the Constitution and caused irreparable injury across the region." Kota Kinabalu: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) has not endorsed any individual as a candidate for the coming state election, said its Secretary-General Datuk Julita Majungki. She said any claim suggesting otherwise does not reflect the party's official position. 'The process of identifying and finalising potential candidates is still ongoing and will be decided collectively by the PBS leadership. 'All official announcements will only be made through proper party channels and must be quoted directly from the acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam,' she said in a statement, on Wednesday. Julita said any statement made without that authority is 'false and misleading'. She also urged all PBS divisions and branches to stay focused on preparing for the state election and continue strengthening grassroots machinery. 'We call on the media and public to verify information with the party's official sources to avoid confusion and misinformation,' she said. On cooperation with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Julita affirmed PBS' agreement with GRS Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's statement that the coalition would work with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the state election. 'This is based on the understanding that GRS will be the dominant partner, as discussed and agreed during meetings between the GRS Chairman and the presidents of component parties, including our acting president,' she said. Julita also clarified that Dr Joachim was unable to attend the recent PGRS annual general meeting as he was officiating the simultaneous opening of five PBS division AGMs in Beaufort.
