MLB plans to use robot umpire challenge system in All-Star Game next week

Washington Post3 days ago
NEW YORK — Major League Baseball plans to use its robot umpire technology for ball-strike challenges in Tuesday's All-Star Game at Atlanta, another step toward possible regular-season use next season.
MLB said Wednesday it intends to make the All-Star announcement Thursday.
Teams won 52.2% of their ball/strike challenges during the spring training test, with 617 of 1,182 challenges successful in the 288 exhibition games using the Automated Ball-Strike System . ABS was installed at 13 spring training ballparks hosting 19 teams , and an animation of the pitch was shown on video boards displaying the challenge result for spectators to see.

Roberts, Murphy defend Misiorowski 's selection to NL All-Stat roster

SAN FRANCISCO — The addition of Milwaukee Brewers rookie phenom pitcher Jacob Misiorowski to the National League All-Star team drew mixed reactions around Major League Baseball. Some players and fans quickly took to social media to express their frustrations over a player with only five starts in the majors being added to the NL roster instead of other players who have put up as good, if not better, numbers during the first half of the season. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who will manage the NL squad Tuesday in Atlanta, is on the opposite end of the spectrum. Roberts made it clear that he had no voice in selecting Misiorowski but sees the move as a positive, given the entertainment value of the Midsummer Classic. 'The All-Star game is about the fans,' Roberts said. 'Yes, this kid hasn't pitched a whole lot in the big leagues but I do think it sparks some more excitement, seeing the velocity.' The 23-year-old, who is 4-1 with a 2.81 ERA, quickly gained attention when he threw a 100.5 mph fastball for his first pitch in the big leagues. Brewers manager Pat Murphy said he understood the backlash from around the league but sees it as giving fans what they want. 'People want to see Miz pitch,' Murphy said. 'He's the new shiny toy in the league. It's not deserving, that has nothing to do with it. He's been given this opportunity. It's not his fault. 'This wasn't a fly by night decision. This is something they thought through. I think it would be really tough for the kid to say no to that.' Murphy likened Misiorowski to former Detroit Tigers pitcher Mark 'The Bird' Fidrych. Fidrych was an All-Star his first two seasons in the majors, a unique player who would often talk to his glove while on the mound. Fans embraced Fidrych and his eccentricities because he had the stuff on the mound to back it up. He pitched 24 complete games as a rookie in 1976, including back-to-back games when he logged 11 innings each time. 'From what I know of The Bird, it just seems that he was really authentic and really super talented,' Murphy said. 'There's some parallels there for sure.' ___ AP MLB:

56-year-old Dustin Rhodes wins AEW gold in his home state

The crowd in Globe Life Field, and the AEW announcers and wrestlers on our screen, were still processing Adam Cole's possible retirement announcement from moments before. But the show must go on, and a new TNT champion needed to be crowned after Cole vacated. Cole's originally scheduled opponent Kyle Fletcher was a part of the 4-way for the vacant belt, as was previous champ Daniel Garcia. Both Garcia and his mentor Matt 'Daddy Magic' Menard shared a moment with Cole during their entrance. Three-time TNT titleholder Sammy Guevara was also in the match, along with the man he holds the ROH Tag titles with, Dustin Rhodes. That duo was in their second match of the night, after winning an 8-man on the pre-show. Rhodes and Guevara, together known as Sons of Texas, worked together on occasion, and didn't work against each other, including during a bit of fun where all three babyfaces hit Dustin's Unnatural Kick/Shattered Dreams on the favorite Fletcher. But their alliance broke down after Sammy inadvertently hit a corner drop kick on his partner. Garcia tried to take advantage of that, setting off a sequence that would end when Guevara took out Fletcher with a cutter as Garcia locked his partner in a Dragontamer. But Dustin was able to reverse the hold and roll the younger man up for a win, taking his first AEW gold in his home state at 56-years-old. The Texans in attendance loved it, as did the ones who came into celebrate with Rhodes, his nephews Wayne & Wyatt Rhodes and his trios partners Ross & Marshall Von Erich. A call that will be debated online, but felt right given what it followed. Fletcher will be champ soon, but All In Texas was Dustin Rhodes time.
