Vietnam abolishes death penalty for 8 crimes in revised Penal Code

The Sun6 days ago

HANOI: Vietnam's National Assembly on Wednesday passed a revised Penal Code, abolishing the death penalty for eight crimes, including embezzlement, reported Xinhua quoting a Vietnam News Agency report.
The revision law also allows life-term sentences for embezzlement or bribery, which may be reduced only if offenders return at least three-fourths of the assets and actively assist authorities or make major contributions, according to the report.
Under the revised law, the death penalty will be eliminated for other seven crimes, including subversion, sabotage of infrastructure, counterfeit drug trafficking, illegal drug transport, war aggression, espionage, and bribery, the report added.
Minister of Justice Nguyen Hai Ninh said the amended law will help strengthen cooperative relations based on mutual trust, while reflecting the responsibility and capacity of state management and judicial agencies in the current context.
The amended law will take effect from July 1, 2025.

Incest: Farmer gets 45 years, 15 lashes

Published on: Tuesday, July 01, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 01, 2025 By: Marutin Ansiung Text Size: Each charge was framed under Section 376(2)(d) of the Penal Code. KENINGAU: A 40-year-old farmer was sentenced to 45 years in jail and 15 strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here on three counts of incest against daughter, who has an intellectual disability, on Monday. The man pleaded guilty before Judge Ahmad Fairuz Mohd Puzi to committing the offence against his 14-year-old biological daughter, who is a registered person with an intellectual disability in August 2024, at a house in a village in Tambunan. Ahmad sentenced the man to 15 years in jail and five strokes of the cane for each charge. The court ordered Ahmad to serve the imprisonment sentence consecutively. Each charge was framed under Section 376(2)(d) of the Penal Code. Counsel Timothy Daut, representing the man, requested a lenient sentence, stating that he had admitted his wrongdoing and repented. Timothy also submitted that the man had no prior criminal record and was willing to undergo rehabilitation. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ling Guong Zhin urged the court to impose a heavier sentence to serve as a deterrent to society. The court heard that the man was arrested by police on Aug 29, 2024, following a report lodged by the Tambunan Health Clinic. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? NGOs demand immediate release of Long Tepen protestors

Handout photo shows the two men currently under remand. MIRI (July 1): Sarawak non-governmental organisation (NGO) Keruan and Swiss NGO Bruno Manser Fonds (BMF) are calling for the immediate release of two Penan protestors from Long Tepen. The men were remanded for four days on Sunday to assist with an investigation under Section 103 of the Forest Ordinance. In a joint statement, Keruan and BMF called on the government to support the immediate release of the two men and to take action to stop logging in the area. 'The rights of indigenous peoples to their land must be respected and protected,' said the statement. The NGOs called for assistance on the matter from the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam). According to the statement, one other man escaped with minor injuries and reported the incident to the police. Komeok Joe from Keruan said while the Penan community from Long Tepen has repeatedly filed police reports against the destruction of their forests by a company, their rights have been ignored and their defenders criminalised. 'Instead of addressing the community's legitimate concerns, authorities have chosen to target those who stand up for their land and culture,' he claimed. According to the NGOs, Long Tepen folk filed police reports in September 2024, March 2025, and June 2025 against the logging activities of a company on their ancestral lands and the dismantlement of their blockades. Yesterday, Roland Engan, the lawyer for the two men, called on all parties to remain calm to allow the investigation and any possible prosecution to proceed without interference. The Sarawak Forest Department said in a statement that the two men were also being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for making criminal threats. The department claimed the two men were among individuals who had set up a blockade in Telang Usan on June 28 and used violence against the department's enforcement personnel while they were carrying out their duties by abusing and injuring them. 'These individuals also issued threatening words against enforcement personnel during the incident,' said the department. The department added another suspect fled the scene and is still being pursued. Bruno Manser Fonds Keruan Komeok Joe lead Long Tepen
