Whanganui club rugby: Marist and Border chase first win of season
Therefore, both Marist and Border need their first on-field win, given Byfords Readi-Mix Taihape will pocket five points on their break this weekend, while the undefeated Wanganui Car Centre Kaierau travel to the Pa to meet Rātana in what should be an absolutely barnstorming Barracks Challenge Shield match due to the talent in both backlines.
The other big incentive for the Spriggens game is the inter-club Jake Alabaster Memorial Shield, named for the young utility forward who played for both clubs before passing away in 2017, aged 24.
Since its introduction in 2018, Marist have held the shield only twice, the last time being when they defeated Border in the first round of games in the 2019 season, 27-25.
There have been chances – none better than the first-round games last year when a very understrength Marist travelled to Dallison Park and played above themselves, before Border first-five Tyrone Albert slotted a penalty with less than one minute left for a 32-29 win.
Their veterans, like redoubtable prop Renato Tikoisolomone, outside back Tom Symes and lock Jack Hodges, are the surviving front-line players from the last era where Marist could beat Border semi-regularly, before the Waverley club started their magnificent five-straight championship run.
Star midfielder Alekesio Vakarorogo was injured for the Rātana game but Border have been well-served by their other Fijian backs Silio Waqalevu and Rusiate Lalanabaravi – the latter doing some awesome offloads to set up winger tries.
Marist have very few front-liners left from the 2018-19 seasons. Their success hinges on the efforts of play-makers Daniel Kauika and Wiremu Morgan, and a strong loose-forward trio in Samu Kubunavanua, Brett Joyes and Jayden Lower.

Hooker's key to longevity: Few beers, physio, swimming with sons
Rowan O'Gorman is in his 25th season of premier rugby, and even after notching another remarkable milestone the veteran hooker shows no sign of slowing down. O'Gorman came off the bench for Marist Albion in their 33-26 win over Lincoln University on Saturday, making his 350th appearance for the club's division one side. Now 43, he's the oldest player in the competition – but says he will keep playing for as long as he can. 'I'll just keep on playing until I'm done enjoying it or get too injured. The number (of games) is all about how good the boys are going, if the boys don't need me, then they don't need me. 'But it's still fun to be around.' His 350 appearances since his debut aged 18 in 2000 are not only the most for Marist, but a Metro record as well - one O'Gorman has held since he overtook fellow Marist man Tala Kale's record of 330 in 2022. Recovery is key at his age. O'Gorman credits his longevity to 'a few beers,' good physios, and regular swims with his sons Eli, 6, and Noah, 9 – both of whom play in Marist's junior grades. 'Swimming pools are a really good one, that's quite often the usual, take the kids to swimming lessons on the Sunday or Monday, and go for a swim,' he said. His boys were on hand for Saturday's milestone and got the chance to run out with their dad before kick-off. 'It was pretty cool being able to do that with them,' O'Gorman said. 'Noah, the oldest one, he's right into it. He would've been to every game pretty much since he was about three-years-old. 'The younger one (Eli) enjoys playing around in the mud, but I'm not sure how much footy he actually watches.' Rugby runs deep in the family. O'Gorman's father Kevin played more than 200 games for Marist, and several of Kevin's six siblings – and their children – have also represented the club. Over the years, O'Gorman has won the premier competition three times and held the DCL Shield on 10 occasions, including Marist's current reign. He believes there's a strong chance of more silverware this season. Marist have been the standout team through the regular season, sitting atop the table with one round to go before the playoffs. 'If we play well, we give ourselves a good opportunity to do that and lock away the DCL as well,' O'Gorman said. 'It's definitely one of the stronger squads I've been involved with. 'A lot of it when it comes down to this end of the season is preparing well, doing your homework and making you're in the right space when it comes to the Saturday.'

Marist will play minor premiership winners Pirates Old Boys (POB) at Surrey Park. Marist locked in their spot in the Galbraith Shield semifinals last weekend when they beat Blues 29-24. Coach Derek Manson and his Marist team have been planning this week on how to approach tomorrow's game. "There is a possibility that we could be playing them [POB] again in the semi next week. It could be a good time to rest a few players." One Marist player who might be on limited duties this week is captain Jackson Bevin. The openside flanker has taken on the heaviest workload every week for Marist during the last two seasons. Marist are in a tricky position, not wanting to lose momentum after winning their past five games in a row. "We were happy with how the team [ground] out the victory last week. They have belief and know-how to win." The Barbarians beat competition leaders Pirates Old Boys 29-25 last weekend to book their spot in the semifinals. The Barbarians can determine whether they finish third or fourth when they take on Star at Oreti Park tomorrow. Star will be playing their last fixture of the year, but have enough quality in their team to win this game. Blues will host Woodlands in the third dead rubber at Balmoral Drive. Woodlands had already booked a semifinal on their home ground before beating Star 56-22 last week. Woodlands had lost their previous three games, but bounced back in style to knock the defending champions out of finals contention.
