Austin Utilities announces retirement of long time engineering supervisor

Yahoo06-05-2025
May 5—Austin Utilities has announced the retirement of Keven Maxa, engineering supervisor with 24 years of service effective June 30.
Maxa joined Austin Utilities in 2000 and has been the Engineering Supervisor ever since. Prior to his career with AU, Keven was employed at Owatonna Public Utilities for over 10 years in the Engineering Department.
"Thank you to Keven for his long-term career at Austin Utilities," said Mark Nibaur, General Manager at Austin Utilities. "We greatly appreciate his leadership to better serve our community. We wish Keven the best in his retirement."
During his tenure, Maxa has seen many changes in the engineering field, most notably how much the use of technology has increased both in the office and in the field.
Maxa has dedicated significant time to serving on numerous local and state boards. For 24 years, he organized the local Dig Safe meetings, demonstrating his long-standing commitment to utility safety. He served as president of the Prairieland Utility Coordinating Committee (PUCC) from 2004 to 2008 and again from 2012 through 2025. Additionally, he was an active member for the 216D Gopher One-Call Statue Review Committee from 2003 to 2025.
In his retirement, Maxa hopes to do a lot of traveling and check off some locations on his bucket list. He plans to visit all 50 states. He's also looking forward to spending more time with family.
"Keven has been a cornerstone and trusted resource at AU for many years," said Utility Operations Director Alex Bumgardner. "His dedication to continuously improving our infrastructure and his unwavering commitment to our customers will be deeply missed. We wish him a very happy next chapter in retirement."

Can AngloGold's Cost Discipline Help It Maintain Edge Over Peers?

AngloGold Ashanti plc AU continues to navigate industry-wide inflationary pressures and manages to deliver resilient cost performance, backed by its Full Asset Potential (FAP) program and increased cost vigilance at the site level. AU reported a 4% year-over-year increase in group total cash costs to $1,223 per ounce in the first quarter of 2025. But digging deeper, the increase reflected a 5% rise in inflation across its operating jurisdictions and a 5% uptick in royalty costs linked to the higher gold prices. Overall, the company saw a 7% increase in market-driven costs. Managed operations saw a 2% year-over-year decline in total cash costs per ounce despite increases in royalties. This was driven by the inclusion of Sukari following the Centamin acquisition in November 2024 and steady performance at Siguiri. These gains were partially offset by operational challenges and a temporary plant stoppage at Iduapriem. Non-managed joint ventures experienced cost pressures, with total cash costs soaring 59% year over year to $1,325 per ounce. This was due to lower gold production, higher royalties and increased open pit volume-related operating costs at Kibali. All-in sustaining costs per ounce (AISC) for the group inched up 1% year over year to $1,640 per ounce in the quarter. At managed operations, AISC per ounce dipped 2% reflecting the positive impact of Sukari's inclusion, while AISC at non-managed joint ventures increased 37% due to weaker operational performance at Kibali. For 2025, AngloGold projects group total cash costs at $1,125-$1,225 per ounce, and AISC between $1,580 and $1,705 per ounce. Both ranges indicate a 2% increase at the midpoint from the year-ago reported levels. The company remains focused on improving its position on the cost curve, leveraging the FAP program to enhance operational efficiency and productivity offsetting inflationary impacts. Its cost management appears effective, with only a 1% rise in average real cash costs over the timeframe between first-quarter 2021 and first-quarter 2025. Its peer group, which includes major gold miners like Barrick Mining Corporation B and Newmont Corporation NEM, has seen a more than 20% spike in average real cash costs. Newmont's gold costs applicable to sales rose 16% year over year to $1,227 per ounce in the first quarter. AISC was $1,651 per ounce, reflecting a roughly 15% year-over-year increase. The rise was attributed to a decline in production due to non-core asset divestments as Newmont shifts its focus to Tier 1 assets. Barrick Mining saw a 22% sequential increase in AISC to $1,775 per ounce in the first quarter due to operational challenges, higher total cash costs per ounce and an uptick in mine site sustaining capital expenditure. Lower production due to the suspension of operations at Barrick's Loulo-Gounkoto mine also contributed to the rise. AngloGold Ashanti's stock has skyrocketed 104% year to date, outperforming the Zacks Mining – Gold industry's 53% growth. During this time, the Basic Materials sector has risen 13.7% and the S&P 500 has rallied 5.9%. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research AU is currently trading at a forward 12-month earnings multiple of 9.51X, at a discount to the industry average of 12.62X. The stock has a Value Score of B. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research The Zacks Consensus Estimate for AngloGold Ashanti's 2025 sales is $8.85 billion, indicating 52.8% year-over-year growth. The consensus mark for the year's earnings is $4.99 per share, indicating year-over-year growth of 125.8%. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 sales implies 2.3% year-over-year growth. The same for earnings indicates a decline of 1.3%. EPS estimates for 2025 and 2026 have been trending north over the past 60 days, as seen in the chart below. Last chance to grab Sony's WH-1000XM5 at an unbeatable price before Prime Day ends

Sony's flagship WH-1000XM5 over-ear headphones have dropped to an astonishingly low price for Prime Day, with a massive saving of 33% on the RRP bringing their cost down to just AU$549 AU$369 — that's a saving of AU$180! Even outside of Amazon, this is the best price we've seen on local stock of the WH-1000XM5, though they have been cheaper on the import market. In our WH-1000XM5 review, we praised their "spectacular sound quality, noise-cancellation and integration with one of the best headphone apps we've encountered", scoring them 4.5 stars in the process. Sounds great, right? You'll have to hurry though — Amazon's Prime Day sale event ends at 11:59pm AEST tonight (July 14), which means this is likely your last chance to score them at this incredible price. This sale is only on the black pair, something worth keeping in mind. Otherwise, it's the same WH-1000XM5 we've rated highly. You get 30 hours of battery life, a comfortable fit and solid sound. And, as you might have already guessed, a new lowest price on Amazon! Also worth mentioning, this is a Prime-exclusive deal, which means you'll need an Amazon Prime membership in order to nab the WH-1000XM5 at this price. Thankfully, Amazon offers a 30-day free trial for new members, which means you can nab this deal with plenty of time to decide whether you want to keep the subscription going. You should also know that this particular version of the WH-1000XM5 owes its affordability to the inclusion of a soft case. However, Amazon also offers the hard-case version at a smaller 18% discount, bringing it down to AU$449. And, while you still have an active Prime account, it's probably a good idea to head over to our Amazon Prime Day AU deals LIVE blog to see what other deals you can take advantage of before the event comes to a close at midnight!

Xmas in July gift ideas — get your shopping done early (and cheaply) with these 7 giftable Prime Day deals

Santa is coming… in precisely 163 days, that is. But before Santa can get his shorts on and deliver his presents for the ultimate Aussie summer Christmas, you may be thinking about doing some gift giving of your own — and snagging some bangin' Amazon bargains while you're at it. In which case, celebrate Christmas in July this year and get ahead of the game with these 5 top gift ideas, courtesy of Amazon Prime Day. These deals make excellent gifts for nearly every age — including your grandparents — and could make for great additions to your own ever-growing wish list. We know there's going to be at least one major sales event before December (hello, Black Friday 2025). However, there's no harm in grabbing some gifts now, especially since you have five months to make returns, exchanges or refunds. Also, it's a good idea to sign up for Amazon Prime if you haven't done so already. With a 30-day free trial for new members, you could always give it a go now and see if it's a subscription worth maintaining ahead of the next major Amazon sale — likely Prime Big Deal Days in October. As for right now, though, you'll need to act fast to score these stellar steals below. These deals are set to expire tonight – at 11:59pm AEDT on Monday, July 14. Save 65% on this Ring Indoor camera bundle in White and Blush colourways this Prime Day. This bundle is perfect for your older relatives or parents who want to enhance their home security. You might need to explain how the Ring app and its subscription tiers work (and make sure they have a smart device to view their cloud or live HD footage from), but you can rest assured that their home will always be protected, even when they're away. If they need outside surveillance, you could consider this Ring Battery Video Doorbell bundle with one indoor camera for AU$99. We all have that one family member who always has their nose in a new book, so why not let them indulge in their reading fantasies with a new Kindle ereader this Christmas? Currently, the Kindle Paperwhite is down to its lowest price ever of AU$217 for Prime Day in July. We could see it come down further for Black Friday 2025, but if you don't want to wait that long, we'd suggest nabbing it now at this killer price. You could also consider the Kindle Scribe, down to an all-time low of AU$449, that doubles as a notebook, complete with its own stylus pen. If you're looking for a fun gift your kids will enjoy this Christmas, a Lego set is guaranteed to entertain them for hours on end. Right now, there's up to 40% off select Lego sets on its Amazon storefront, from a range of different franchises. Some of my top gifting contenders include: • Lego Botanicals Chrysanthemum Flower 10368: was AU$44.99 now AU$37.60 on Amazon• Lego Ideas Disney Pixar Luxo Jr. 21357: was AU$109.95 now AU$79 at Amazon• Lego Creator 3-in-1 Medieval Dragon 31161: was AU$89.99 now AU$63.20 on Amazon• Lego Icons The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr 10333: was AU$699.99 now AU$664.99 on Amazon As a hair tool reviewer, I couldn't go past picking this Revlon blowout brush for myself last year, and it has since become an integral part of my styling routine. It provides effortless, bouncy, frizz-free hair that lasts for days, and it comes in some seriously fun colourways. My personal favourite is Mint (which I happen to own), but this discount is exclusive to the black and pink option. If a family member needs a new hairstyler this Christmas, this Revlon deal shouldn't be dismissed. There's never been a more perfect gift than a pair of Crocs, if you ask me. With up to 57% off select clogs, sandals, lined clogs and slippers, there's something for everyone (and every shoe-wearing activity) on Crocs' Amazon storefront. Some of my top-rated pairs include: • Crocs Platform Clog: was AU$99.99 now from AU$48.99 on Amazon• Crocs Classic Clog: was AU$79.99 now from AU$39.99 on Amazon• Crocs Classic Clog (seasonal colours): was AU$79.99 now from AU$37.99 on Amazon• Crocs Unisex Adult Classic Cozzzy Slipper: was AU$84.99 now AU$37.05 on Amazon If you've got a family member who's constantly on the go, be it commuting or travelling, there's no better accessory to have than a portable power bank for their devices. Our colleagues over at TechRadar give this INIU top marks in their best power banks guide, as it can fast charge a phone with ease, and still have extra juice left over. Now, this is a gift that keeps on giving. Right now, when you purchase AU$200 or more in Amazon gift cards, you'll receive a AU$10 promo credit to spend at the retailer. So while you can give your giftee the best gift of all — and that's freedom of choice — you can also get a little cash back to put towards all those Amazon purchases you've had your eye on. What a win.
