Mariah Carey says she will ‘always be there' for the LGBTQ+ community at Pride

The five-time Grammy winner, who has sold more than 220 million albums worldwide, took to the stage in Preston Park on Saturday night as the headline act at Brighton & Hove Pride.
Her set included timeless classics like Hero and Fantasy, along with the single Sugar Sweet from her upcoming 16th studio album Here For It All.
Carey appeared sporting a sparkling pink, blue and silver dress and matching jacket, matching the colours of the transgender flag, with 'protect the dolls' on the back.

One fan took to X to post a photo of the outfit with the comment: 'Mariah Carey is always on the right side of history.'
Talking about the LGBTQ+ community, Carey said: ''They've been here for me for so long, supported me through good times and bad, and I just wanted you to know I'll always be there for you.'
She then went on to dedicate her next song Hero to the community and her audience at Preston Park.
The star was set to headline the event in 2020 before Covid-19 restrictions saw it cancelled, but she was back equipped with three outfit changes, and a host of back-up dancers, singers and musicians.
Earlier, American rapper and singer Ashnikko told the crowd it would be 'wrong' not to acknowledge that 'we are witnessing a genocide in Gaza' while on stage.
She reminded the crowd 'Pride started as a protest', before adding 'we will not be complicit in that'.
She said that it can be hard to stay positive when people's rights are stripped 'by fascist overlords disguising themselves as democratic leaders'.

Earlier, some Pride-goers travelling down from London were handed 'Care(y) packages' at London Blackfriars station by the Govia Thameslink Railway train company.
The packages were packed with electrolytes, SPF, paper fans, glitter tattoos and face stickers – with some items bearing the labels 'See it, Slay it, Sorted'.
According to the BBC, roughly 300,000 people will be coming to Brighton over the weekend.
As fans left the park after Carey had finished her set with a flourish, some were singing 'All I want for Christmas is you' as they wandered out into the August night.

Dolly Parton named Guinness World Records icon

As part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, the company – which lists world record achievements – has honoured the Jolene singer, 79, with an Icon certificate, presented to her at her studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Her record titles include most consecutive decades with top 10 album entries on the Billboard country chart, most studio albums released by a female country singer, and most Grammy nominations for a female country artist. She was also the first country singer to be nominated for the Egot – an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony – aka the 'Grand Slam of showbusiness'. Craig Glenday, editor in chief at Guinness World Records, said: 'Dolly is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated writers and performers in the history of country music, as reflected in her many Guinness World Records certificates, but her reach and influence extends far beyond the musical world. 'There are so many projects close to her heart – poverty relief, education, medical research and of course the Imagination Library free-books campaign – and it's these important, life-changing initiatives that propels Dolly into a different league. She truly is a living legend, and it's an honour to bestow GWR Icon status upon her.' Guinness World Records published its first book in London in 1955 and has sold more than 143 million copies in over 100 countries since then. The Icon certificate has previously been awarded to stars including Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Drake, Sir Paul McCartney, and Sir Elton John. Parton, who is from Tennessee, released her debut album, Hello, I'm Dolly in 1967 and had a run of hits in the 1970s. By the 1980s she was a huge star and made her movie debut in screwball comedy 9 To 5. Her most recent album was Rockstar, released in 2023, and she recently featured in a version of Sabrina Carpenter's Please Please Please. She is also the co-owner of the Dollywood Company, which operates Dollywood, a theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

Stevenage woman gives unwanted Plushies a new lease of life

A card-shop owner says she wants people to "see cuddly toys in a different light" after launching a scheme to smarten up second-hand Sorrell, 58, was inspired to start the Preloved Plushy Project at her Stevenage shop Cardies after noticing how many were being discarded."I was seeing some going to charity shops, and because they were marked or grubby, the charity shops couldn't do anything with them and had to throw them away," she said."I'm a big recycler and upcycler, so I'm keen to find a new love-life for lots of things – one man's rubbish is another man's treasure," she told the BBC. She explained her secret to restoring the toys so they looked nearly-new."A lot of people make the mistake that they just wash the teddy bear, and it gets all matted," Ms Sorrell said."I wash it and leave it to dry thoroughly, and then use [a] brush to bring it back to fluffiness."I've got labradors, and there's a specific dog brush with very fine pins that teases the undercoat."It's a slicker brush and it does a similar thing with the cuddly toys. Of course, I don't use the same brush that I use on my dog!" Ms Sorrell explained that she had already been able to match up donations with keen owners."We had a couple of lads come in and their mum said they were looking for Super Mario characters," she said."There was a giant sack of washed toys we hadn't sorted, so we rummaged through it and found two Super Marios. They went away very happy!"Another lady tagged them on social media, saying she worked with young people and one would be thrilled to have an Eeyore toy."Funnily enough, an Eeyore appeared the next day in one of our bags, as if by magic."Ms Sorrell hopes people beyond Stevenage will start doing the same thing to prolong the life of soft toys."I'm keen that other people should take this idea up and see cuddly toys in a different light," she said."It's also just presenting them differently – rather than a box of sad-looking teddies in the corner – [to] make them look appealing."
