The Fijiana women's rugby team kicked off their campaign at the Oceania Rugby Women's Challenge with a 59-5 win over Tonga in Sigatoka on Friday afternoon.
Defending the title at home, the Fijians took a 30-0 lead at halftime.
Fiji's head coach, Ioan Cunningham, expressed pride in his team's performance, particularly under the challenging ground conditions at Lawaqa Park.
He also praised the impact of the five debutants.
Tonga will meet Samoa on Tuesday in the second game of the tournament.
Meanwhile, in the Oceania Under-20 Rugby Challenge, the Fiji under-20s team retained their title for another year when they swept through the event undefeated.
Fiji will host Samoa and Australia in a tri-nation international boxing event at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva at the end of June.

reports the Fiji Amateur Boxing head coach Cam Todd confirmed a team of 30 boxers from Australia and a 10-member squad from Samoa will be competing.
The event will feature boxers in the 12 to 19-year-old bracket, in both the male and female categories.
Todd said the Australian team features several state champions and elite-level fighters.
Team Samoa are currently seeking more funding to make their trip possible.
Independent Boxing Samoa Incorporated president Tavui Mike Lemisio said while they have received assistance from the Samoa Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it's not enough.

reported the team needs the funding to pay off their airfares, accommodation and other expenses.
Former New Zealand sevens and Hurricanes player Salesi Rayasi has been named in the Flying Fijians extended squad for upcoming international matches in July.
Rayasi, who played 50 games for the Hurricanes in Super Rugby, signed a two-year deal with French club Vannes last year.
Fijians' head coach Mick Byrne has named him in the squad to prepare for matches against the Wallabies and Scotland.
The squad includes Hawke's Bay scrum half Sam Wye, some players from the Fijian Drua team and a number of players playing in Europe.
The draw has been made for the FIFA under-20 World Cup which includes Oceania qualifiers New Zealand and New Caledonia.
OFC champions New Zealand are in group A, alongside hosts Chile, Japan and Egypt.
Second qualifier New Caledonia will make its tournament debut and face USA, France and South Africa in Group E.
The tournament, which will start in late September, will see matches played in four different cities across Chile.
The inaugural six-team Rugby Premier League 7s is set to debut in India from 15 to 29 June.
A number of international sevens stars have been named in the six franchise teams, including some from Fiji and New Zealand.
Rahul Bose, President of Rugby India, said the event will be a game-changer for rugby in India, and fans can expect nothing less than world-class rugby action that will inspire the next generation of athletes in the country.
The Fiji national women's football team scored a 3-1 win over Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby in the team's final international friendly.

reported PNG drew first blood through Marie Kaipu, who gave the home side an early lead.
But Fijian striker Cema Nasau scored a hat-trick to give her team the win.
Both sides now shift their focus to the 2025 OFC Women's Nations Cup, which will be held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Tavatavanawai, first selected for the series against France in July, has been named by head coach Scott Robertson alongside fellow Queen Victoria School alumni Sevu Reece and Emoni Narawa. He is one of 16 players of Pasifika heritage named in the squad to face Argentina, Australia and South Africa in the series, which kicks off on 17 August. Two more players of Pasifika originals are named as injury covers, in George Bower and Tevita Mafileo. The All Blacks face the Pumas in their first game. Three Fijian players tested positive for illegal drugs during the Fiji Football Association-organised Battle of the Giants tournament in Labasa at the weekend. Fiji Football Association chief executive Mohammed Yusuf said 48 tests were done on Friday and Saturday. The Fiji Sun reported disciplinary actions range from a fine and a three-month suspension for first offenders, to harsher penalties if that's warranted. Yusuf said the Fiji FA is teaming up with a non-governmental organisation to take drug awareness into districts around the country. The Fiji men's netball team has recorded a narrow 43-42 win over New Zealand on day one of an invitational tournament in Suva. It was the first time the two teams met in men's netball. FBC reported the high-intensity match lived up to the hype. Meanwhile, Fiji A also defeated Tonga 60-37 in the opening match. The action continues on Tuesday with Fiji A taking on New Zealand while Tonga squares off against the main Fiji team. World Rugby chairman Brett Robinson says "rugby is the game of the Pacific". The former Wallaby, now at the helm of world rugby, made the comments after Pacific rugby chiefs recently raised concern over the NRL's investment into the region. The NRL's multi-million-dollar deal between the Australian and PNG governments has raised concerns on how that might affect rugby union. Speaking at the launch of the ticketing programme for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, Robinson said he's confident of rugby's status in the Pacific. Northern Marianas Sports Association President Jerry Tan says he wants the CNMI to send their largest-ever delegation to the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti. Marianas Variety reported Tan made the statement at a celebration ceremony for NMI athletes who competed at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau. Tan said the goal is to send 259 athletes to Tahiti, representing sports such as football, swimming, va'a, baseball, sailing, taekwondo and power lifting. He said work on the process of securing a charter flight with Air Tahiti will begin soon, with fundraising activities to fund Team NMI also expected to roll out in the next few months.

Former All Black George Bridge signs with Force

The 30-year-old has spent the past three seasons with Montpellier in France's Top 14 where he also played in the European Rugby Champions Cup and Challenge Cup. He was part of New Zealand's 2019 World Cup squad, is a four-time Super Rugby champion and two-time Super Rugby Aotearoa winner from his six-year stint with the Crusaders. Bridge has played 82 Super Rugby games and scored 37 tries during his time with the Crusaders from 2017 to 2022 and then clocked up 48 caps and 11 tries for Montpellier. Bridge said the Force are a franchise which is heading in the right direction. "I'm keen to take on the new challenge and contribute to the club's success. I've always loved my time in Perth, and with friends and good connections among the staff and players, it felt like the right fit." Force head coach Simon Cron said Bridge brings professionalism, versatility and a high rugby IQ. "He's got a massive left foot kick. He can play multiple positions. He's a brilliant player. An amazing talent. He will add to the guys that we have in the squad. We know when we have injuries, it's important we have depth so we can progress deep into Super Rugby finals. "I know a few New Zealand franchises were chasing him hard, but he wanted to join the Force. He'll add a lot to our environment." Rugby: Former roofer Kyle Preston caps off meteoric rise with All Blacks call-up

Photo: Brett Phibbs / The Tawa College product made his NPC debut for Wellington in 2023 before picking up his first Super Rugby gig with the Crusaders this year. Following a breakout year with the Super Rugby champions, he could possibly play his first test after being named in the All Blacks squad as injury cover. "It's funny," Preston said. "You don't really expect it (All Blacks call-up), but it's in the back of your mind if you're playing well. You hope to maybe see your name." There's no doubt his form for the Crusaders is what got Preston selected, but for the Wellingtonian, the move to Christchurch wasn't necessarily natural. "It was a massive call for me. I've never lived out of Wellington," Preston said. "So to make the move down to Christchurch was a pretty big decision. Obviously I'm super glad that I made the move. It was good to just get out the comfort zone and be in a new environment, a new city. "I really enjoyed it down there." Preston believes playing in a title-winning team and behind a strong Crusaders forward pack helped his All Blacks cause. "For sure. There's rich history in that club and a lot of good players down there. So to be able to get a chance to play for them helps with the exposure. I was probably getting a few more minutes than I would have if I stayed up here (Wellington)." Kyle Preston playing for Wellington. Photo: Preston, who has signed with the Crusaders to the end of the 2027 season, has a strong kicking game and he believes that is one of his points of difference. "I kick off both feet and I think on the field it helps relieve a little bit of pressure through games. So, yeah, I guess that's an asset for me." Another asset is his fitness. During pre-season, he set a Crusaders bronco record (a fitness test measuring endurance and speed) of 4 minutes and 13 seconds. "I definitely do a little bit better in fitness test than some others. But rugby is completely different, fitness wise, than just running. So that's not all I'm going to be able to rely on." His background as a roofer helped him develop a strong work ethic and the importance of keeping his body in shape. "It's a cool trade," Preston said. "I'm a man who likes to be up on the roof and and doing things actively. It is pretty tough on the body, though. Trying to juggle rugby and roofing was a bit tough." Though it's a trade he'd be happy to go back to when he's done with rugby. "Thankfully I was able to finish my apprenticeship at the start of last year before it all kind of kicked off (his professional rugby career) So I'll keep that in the back pocket for after the career."
