Why Greg Norman has come around to Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's TGL
World Golf Hall of Famer and businessman Greg Norman told a Palm Beach audience that the growing amount of private investment in golf is good for the sport.
During an appearance March 25 at the Society of the Four Arts, Norman told moderator Steve Sands, a golf host and announcer for NBC Sports and the Golf Channel, that the sport was in "a great place" thanks to the influx of private equity.

"Private equity now has true value in the world of sport," Norman said. "It's happening all around the world. It's happening in cricket, in Australia and in India. It's happening in other places. I'm just so proud of the fact that that's happened to golf, where billions of dollars are being moved into the game of golf because of private equity."
Norman, known as "The Great White Shark" discussed golf, business, and philanthropy with Sands, who also took questions from the audience. Their wide-ranging discussion was part of the Esther B. O'Keeffe Speakers Series.

Greg Norman on TGL: 'I say it's fantastic'
Golf was a central topic throughout Norman's talk. While highlighting the impact of private equity in the sport, he noted that Tomorrow's Golf League (TGL), a tech-driven, team-based golf league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy in partnership with TMRW Sports, has flourished as a result.

The league, which is based at the SoFi Center at Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens, recently wrapped up its first season.
"The TGL is great," Norman said. "Everybody asks me what I think of the TGL, and I say it's fantastic. It's more stuff, more golf, it's more innovation. It's taking things to a new level. It's catering to a new market. It's doing this, doing that. There's no angst or animosity from my perspective. It's just magnificent now people are seeing the value that golf can give them."
Norman, whose departure from the Saudi-backed LIV Golf was announced in January, had previously offered little perspective on the upstart simulator golf league.
Later in the night, Norman weighed in on the debate between Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the greatest golfer of all time.

"Jack, by far. But you've got to put that in perspective. You look at the different eras that happened," Norman said. "I always put Jack down there. Tiger's extremely consistent, Tiger's extremely good. There's no question about it. But Jack has done more, and he is the consummate winner and he is the consummate loser.
"Jack will always instill value into the younger generation. I've seen it, I've experienced it and I've been involved with it, so that's why I keep Jack up there. I don't talk to Tiger. I don't know. Maybe he's different. I've spent a lot of time with Jack, so it's going to be very hard for anybody to get me to bump him off the top of his pedestal."

Rivian loss bigger than expected on higher costs, lower credit income

By Akash Sriram and Abhirup Roy (Reuters) -Rivian Automotive reported a higher-than-expected quarterly loss on Tuesday as disruption in supply of rare earth metals used to make parts of its electric vehicles raised costs and income from credits sold to traditional automakers dwindled. Shares of the automaker fell 4% in trading after the bell. China's curbs on the export of heavy rare earth metals —essential components for motors — sharply increased material costs and disrupted supply chains, driving up the cost of EV production in the U.S. The company reported an adjusted loss per share of 80 cents for the second quarter, compared with analysts' average estimate of 65 cents, according to data compiled by LSEG. Rivian also flagged a bigger adjusted core loss this year, expecting it to between $2 billion and $2.25 billion, compared with $1.7 billion to $1.9 billion previously forecast. The company largely blamed a tapering in the value of U.S. regulatory credits for the higher loss estimate. The elimination of penalties for automakers not meeting fuel economy standards by President Donald Trump's administration has drastically reduced demand for regulatory credits, which companies like Rivian previously sold to traditional automakers to help them avoid emissions fines. The company delivered 10,661 vehicles in the second quarter, marking a 22% decline from the same period a year earlier, as Rivian limited production to prepare for its 2026 model year launch. Earlier this year, the company slashed its 2025 deliveries forecast to 40,000 to 46,000 vehicles from an initial 46,000 to 51,000, citing U.S. tariffs resulting in cost pressures that dampened demand. The company said it will pause production for one week less in the second half of 2025 to integrate key components and prepare for the launch of the R2 SUV next year. The $7,500 federal EV tax credit expires at the end of September, eliminating a key competitive advantage that has driven electric vehicle demand, but analysts anticipate a surge in third-quarter sales as consumers rush to purchase EVs before losing access to the incentive. The company said it expects a record number of deliveries in the third quarter across its consumer and commercial vehicle segments. Revenue for the second quarter stood at $1.3 billion, surpassing analysts' average estimate of $1.28 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Cash and cash equivalents were $4.81 billion at the end of the June-quarter, compared with $4.69 billion in the preceding three-month period.

OpenAI releases lower-cost models to rival Meta, Mistral and DeepSeek

OpenAI on Tuesday released two open-weight language models for the first time since it rolled out GPT-2 in 2019. The text-only models are called gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, and are designed to serve as lower-cost options that developers, researchers and companies can easily run and customize, OpenAI said. An artificial intelligence model is considered open weight if its parameters, or the elements that improve its outputs and predictions during training, are publicly available. Open-weight models can offer transparency and control, but they are different from open-source models, whose full source code becomes available for people to use and modify. Several other tech companies, including Meta, Microsoft-backed Mistral AI and the Chinese startup DeepSeek, have also released open-weight models in recent years. "It's been exciting to see an ecosystem develop, and we are excited to contribute to that and really push the frontier and then see what happens from there," OpenAI President Greg Brockman told reporters during a briefing. The company collaborated with Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, Cerebras, and Groq to ensure the models will work well on a variety of chips. "OpenAI showed the world what could be built on Nvidia AI — and now they're advancing innovation in open-source software," Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement. The release of OpenAI's open weight models has been highly anticipated, in part because the company repeatedly delayed the launch. In a post on X in July, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company needed more time to "run additional safety tests and review high-risk areas." That came after a separate post weeks earlier, where Altman said the models would not be released in June. OpenAI said Tuesday that it carried out extensive safety training and testing on its open-weight models. It filtered out harmful chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear data during pre-training, and it mimicked how bad actors could try to fine-tune the models for malicious purposes. Through this testing, OpenAI said it determined that maliciously fine-tuned models were not able to reach the "high capability" threshold in its Preparedness Framework, which is its method for measuring and protecting against harm. The company also worked with three independent expert groups who provided feedback on its malicious fine-tuning evaluation, OpenAI said. OpenAI said people can download the weights for gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b on platforms like Hugging Face and GitHub under an Apache 2.0 license. The models will be available to run on PCs through programs such as LM Studio and Ollama. Cloud providers Amazon, Baseten and Microsoft are also making the models available. Both models can handle advanced reasoning, tool use and chain‑of‑thought processing, and are designed to run anywhere — from consumer hardware to the cloud to on-device applications. Users can run gpt-oss-20b on a laptop, for instance, and use it as a personal assistant that can search through files and write, OpenAI said. "We're excited to make this model, the result of billions of dollars of research, available to the world to get AI into the hands of the most people possible," Altman said in a statement Tuesday.
