Grounded UK fighter jet gives Kerala Tourism a viral lift

The Hindu2 days ago
After cashing in on the popularity of Hollywood stars Tom Holland and Zendaya, co-stars of Spider Man movies, Kerala Tourism is now making headlines, thanks to the popularity of an F-35B fighter jet of the Royal Air Force (RAF) of the United Kingdom.
The fighter jet that made an emergency landing at the Thiruvananthapuram international airport in Kerala on the night of June 14 remains grounded, generating much hype and speculation on online platforms.
Capitalising on the intense media interest, a social media post shared by Kerala Tourism on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday (July 2, 2025) says: 'Kerala is a destination that you will never want to leave,' against the background of a picture of the grounded F-35B jet.
Flood of trolls
Netizens were quick to lap it up with a flood of trolls on social media platforms. One post said: 'The grounded jet now refuses to start without coconut oil.'
Another post advises the US-based Lockheed Martin, which manufactures the F-35B, one of the most advanced fighter jets in service globally for key NATO allies, to 'never let your jets get near Kerala.' The post was apparently mentioning the damage happened to the reputation of the globally acclaimed jet manufacturer in the US.
This is not the first time that Kerala Tourism has leveraged the popularity of headline-grabbing incidents or people for brand building.
In 2023, a day after the celebrated Hollywood pair Zendaya and Tom Holland paid a trip to Mumbai to attend the grand launch of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, their first trip together to the country, their fans in Kerala were left baffled when a photo of the couple enjoying a trip in Munnar, a popular hill destination in South India, was posted by Kerala Tourism on its social media platform.
In the picture, Tom Holland and Zendaya were seen holding hands on a picturesque tea plantation, while Kerala Tourism added the caption 'Guess who we spotted far away from home?' with the photograph and also added hashtags #FarAwayHome, #Munnar and #KeralaTourism. However, netizens were quick to spot that the Hollywood stars did not visit Munnar, as suggested by the tweet, but the photo was from Boston in the USA, taken a year ago.
According to Kerala Tourism statistics, the UK and the US consistently rank as the top two countries for foreign tourist arrivals in Kerala. Specifically, the U.K. is the biggest market for Kerala Tourism, with British tourists accounting for 14.55% of the total foreign tourists who visited Kerala in 2024, followed by the US with 13.33%. Of the around 7.38 lakh foreign tourist visits in Kerala in 2024, 2.05 lakh were from these two countries.

Popularly called Mylai, it is believed that Parvati worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of a peacock by performing penance, which is what gave the area its name. Mylapore can be translated to 'the town of peacocks', which is another explanation for it being called so. The temple portrays the events of the legend where Parvati once blocked Lord Shiva's eyes playfully out of curiosity. This inadvertently cast the world into darkness, to which Lord Shiva taught her a lesson by sending her to earth in the form of a peacock, forcing her to do penance for his acceptance. This beautiful mythology attracts tourists as well as devotees to the temple. Mystery Behind the Curse of the Santhome Basilica The Santhome Basilica, which is a captivating white piece of architecture near Marina Beach, serves as a pilgrimage spot for Christians. It's famous for the tomb of St. Thomas, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. Like many structures around the world, the Santhome Basilica has its fair share of legends and mysteries. According to local beliefs, St. Thomas was martyred on a nearby hillside called St. Thomas Mount. Legend has it that his body was brought to the same location where the basilica stands. It was said that the area suffered from a curse which would cause misfortune to anyone who wished to build a structure at the location. In spite of the curse, the Portuguese were able to build the original church in the sixteen hundreds. The British constructed the present basilica, making it one of the most beautiful structures crafted by them. Locals say that the curse was removed because of the holiness of St. Thomas's tomb, as people started to revere the area. 'The last thing we want right now is a sequel': Lewis Hamilton not aboard bandwagon for part 2 of Brad Pitt's F1

The world may be waiting with bated breath for an announcement of a sequel to Brad Pitt's sensational racing drama F1, but the film's executive producer and seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton is not on board the bandwagon. The British racer warned Thursday that rushing a sequel would be 'the worst thing we probably could do.' Lewis Hamilton served as executive producer and consultant on Brad Pitt-starrer F1. Lewis Hamilton says he just wants to enjoy the movie's success. The film has become Apple's biggest box-office hit yet when it debuted with $55.6 million in North American theaters and $144 million globally over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. Lewis Hamilton on F1's success On Thursday, Hamilton spoke to the press ahead of the British Grand Prix F1 race, where he was asked about a potential sequel to F1. 'We literally just finished it, so I think the last thing we want right now is a sequel,' Hamilton said, according to the news agency AP. The 39-year-old added, 'It's been four years in the making. It was a lot of work, particularly for (director Joseph Kosinski). It's time away from your family, it's time away from your kids, and also you need this to just simmer for a while, you know. Like, let's enjoy it. I think the worst thing we probably could do is to rush into doing a sequel,' the Ferrari driver added. "Most sequels are way worse, and so we don't need to rush it. I think if we do do a sequel, I would say let's really, really take our time in getting it even better.' Hamilton said he was bringing F1 race-track procedures to the movie business by asking for a 'debrief' on the project, in the same way a team analyses a race before heading to the next one. 'Let's review what we did, what we could have done better,' he said. 'I don't know if they ever do that in the movie business, but it's something obviously I've learned from here.' About F1, the film Directed by Joseph Kosinski, F1 stars Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a driver who returns to Formula One after 30 years to help a friend's team win a race. The film was shot during actual F1 Grand Prix weekends with many drivers and team members appearing in cameos.
