Emma Raducanu's three-word retort to King Charles after his comment about her coaching
King Charles III has had the pleasure of meeting a number of sporting stars in his time on the throne - and he certainly isn't afraid to crack a joke

King Charles III once jokingly asked Emma Raducanu whether she "had found a coach yet" as he handed her a distinguished Royal accolade.
Raducanu is competing in the women's singles at Wimbledon, where she hopes to secure her second-ever Grand Slam title, having previously won the US Open. She will face Markéta Vondroušová in the second round on Wednesday, following her straight-sets triumph over Mimi Xu on the opening day.

The former US Open winner is eager to progress beyond the fourth round at the prestigious tournament, hoping to recapture that winning feeling. Among her supporters is likely to be King Charles III, who shared a memorable and light-hearted exchange with the tennis star not too long ago.

Having ascended to the throne in 2022, the King met the then 20-year-old Raducanu as she was honoured with an MBE for her contributions to tennis.

Reflecting on the encounter during an interview with the Sunday Times Style Magazine in 2023, Raducanu revealed the monarch's humorous side, after he asked her: 'Have you found a coach yet?'

She said: "I was like, 'That's good banter!,'" recalling her three-word response. Continuing, she said: "It was so funny, I was laughing because everyone was ripping me for not having a coach. I was like: 'The fact you know this, I feel honoured.'"
Throughout her short tennis career, Raducanu has worked with coaches like Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson, Torben Beltz, Dmitry Tursunov, Sebastian Sachs, and Nick Cavaday.

So, the monarch's witty remark about the young tennis sensation shows he's well-informed about the latest news in sports, much to Raducanu's delight.
The 22-year-old is currently teaming up with her former coach Cavaday and Mark Petchey at Wimbledon, as she prepares to vie for her second Grand Slam title. After winning her opening match on Monday, Raducanu was full of praise for coach Petchey, rating him "11 out of 10" for his support during her SW19 comeback.
She added: "He's been everything the last few months for me. I've really enjoyed being around him. He's helped me so much on all fronts, tennis, off-court."

Sonay Kartal shines in Wimbledon spotlight to clinch best grand slam result

Many British players have wilted under the Wimbledon spotlight but Sonay Kartal is revelling in it. The 23-year-old from Brighton roared into the fourth round after sweeping aside French qualifier Diane Parry. She is in the last 16 of a grand slam for the first time in her career after a sizzling 6-4 6-2 victory. When Jack Draper was knocked out by Marin Cilic on Thursday he admitted the expectation levels surrounding home players made him realise just how big two-time winner Andy Murray's achievements were. But laid-back Kartal is taking all the hype in her stride as she prepares for a crack at Russian veteran Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for a place in the quarter-finals. 'I enjoy it. I think it's an honour,' she said. 'Obviously if you've got a lot of attention on you, it means you're doing good things. 'I'm pretty calm and pretty collected. I don't think it's going to affect me too much. But no, I'm just enjoying it all. I'll still pretty young. It's my first fourth round. 'I feel like I'm going to go out on the court in the next round kind of with nothing to lose at the minute. I'm going to go swinging. 'I think the pressure that I'll feel is the pressure I will be putting on myself just wanting to perform as best as I can.' Kartal, ranked 298 this time last year, is on the cusp of the top 50 and could even finish the tournament as British number one, usurping Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter. She is the fourth unseeded British woman to reach the fourth round this century after Laura Robson, Heather Watson and Raducanu. Kartal has been shining on Court Three this week but on Friday she was first up on Court One, the scene of her defeat by Coco Gauff at the same stage last year. She made a nervous start, falling 4-1 behind, but then won the next nine games to move a set and 4-0 up on her way to a hugely impressive victory in an hour and 22 minutes. 'I'm not going to lie, I was pretty nervous walking out there,' she added. 'It's a big court with a match that has a lot of meaning to me. 'Obviously last year, that was also in the back of my mind, losing to Coco on the same court in the same round. 'I tried to take everything I learnt from that match and put it into play on the court, tried to relax as best as I could. 'When I got it level, I felt like I was pretty good. The nerves were gone. I just felt super comfortable out there.'

Andy Murray rival who 'committed sackable offence' absent from Wimbledon

It's nearly two years since Liam Broady etched his name into British tennis history at Wimbledon. The 31-year-old delivered a thrilling five-set triumph over then world No.4 Casper Ruud at the All England Club, becoming the first British wildcard to defeat a top-five player at a Grand Slam during the Open Era. Broady, who couldn't secure qualification for this year's tournament, met Ruud in the second round at Wimbledon following his opening victory against France's Constant Lestienne in 2023. The Briton seized the opening set against Ruud en route to a shock 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win. However, whilst the first set remained finely poised, it was jokingly suggested that Broady had committed a "sackable offence". BBC commentator Andrew Castle believed Broady, who also became known for his online exchanges with Andy Murray, would come to regret an error after choosing a poorly-timed trick shot. As Broady sought to draw level in the opening set at 3-3, Ruud attempted a lob that failed to end a gripping rally. Instead of returning a straightforward lob to his rival, Broady tried a backhand while turned away from his opponent, which went out and didn't impress Castle or his coach David Sammel. "His coach is going, 'Don't do that, you could have lobbed that easily,'" Castle said, as reported by the Express. "The crowd loved it but he had plenty of time to get back and at least have a chance of winning the point. "If he loses this point, his coach will be writing that one down and remembering that one. That is a sackable offence." Luckily for Broady, ranked 142nd in the world at the time, he clinched the first set and ultimately triumphed on Centre Court. Broady climbed to a career-best ranking of 95th in September 2023, just months after his win over Rudd. Yet, it wasn't just his on-court prowess that caught attention; his online banter with former doubles partner Murray has often made headlines. In August 2024, Broady shared a post on X: "There's a kid on this flight with an iPad, watching a tv show in the top left corner of the screen with subtitles on. All whilst playing a video game on the full screen. Is this me getting old thinking that's unhealthy for their brain?" Murray couldn't resist a cheeky dig, as he recalled a past encounter with Broady. "I remember once seeing this kid playing a computer game in the lobby of a hotel in Antwerp on his laptop, headphones on with microphone attached," Murray wrote. "Speaking to his friends whilst using WhatsApp with his free hand. His name was Liam Broady and look how he turned out... Spanner." Broady took the jibe in stride: "Guilty as charged," he replied. Instagram Broady, now sporting a beard and longer hair, has made it to the main draw at Wimbledon seven times in his career. However, he failed to return this year for the first time since 2019 after losing a qualifying match to Hamish Stewart in June. Despite this setback, Broady seems to have bounced back, having celebrated winning a doubles title last week. Alongside fellow Brit Charlie Robertson, the duo clinched the M25 doubles title in Elvas, Portugal. Broady is currently ranked 557th in men's singles by the ATP, placing him 25th among British players. His most recent singles title was won in March at the M15 Foggia event on the ITF Tour.
