Image: screenshot EFF caucus leader in the City of Cape Town, Mzubani Dambuza, has given a blow-by-blow account of how he lost consciousness while being choked by a security officer during a Council sitting on Wednesday, saying he begged them to allow him to get up and walk out of the Chambers. The peace officer identified in a video as Renato Reid, which went viral on social media, shows him allegedly choking Dambuza while apparently pinning him to the ground. According to Reid's LinkedIn profile, he is a SWAT Operational Commander with 18 years experience in the South African police. His profile was shared widely on social media following the incident. Cape Town Speaker, Felicity Purchase, said the confrontation started after Dambuza refused to leave the Council Chambers when she asked him to. Giving his account of what happened, Dambuza, better known as 'Banzi', said he refused to leave the Chambers after another councillor was allowed to bring a Point of Order. 'A councillor of GOOD Party was asking a question, and then a Point of Order came from a councillor of the DA,' he said. 'She (Speaker) allowed it, meanwhile, she would always say there is no Point of Order during the time we are dealing with the speech of the mayor. 'I again raised the protective cultures of the DA, she (Purchase) named me for the first time, second time and third time and said I must be removed from Council. 'Upon that I said, I am not going to move out of Council. 'The Speaker called on what we deem as 'peace officers'. 'The rest of the caucus of the EFF started laying a protective layer around me.' Dambuza said the incident quickly escalated. 'There is a photograph showing one of the EFF councillors, she was placing her whole body on top of me, so that I am not taken away,' he said. 'These so-called peace officers were pulling her, whether they were male or female, they were harassing a woman. 'As I grabbed the poles, they wanted to get me out and they tore my pants as they grabbed it. 'This officer, Renato Reid, came in and held me from the back on my neck and then he started strangling me. 'After he pulled me out, he placed his knee onto my neck and then he strangled me. 'I said to him, 'but you are strangling me', 'you are trying to kill me'. He did not stop, he turned me around and sat on top of me and then he continued to strangle me, this was when I was losing life (unconscious), when I became unconscious, he started hitting me from the back, and I came back (from consciousness), then he tried to strangle me again. "This is the time when executive director Vincent Botto stopped them. 'There was another guy holding my right arm under the table, so that I was not able to remove his hands. 'After that, I asked Vincent Botto, who is the officer, they refused to give his details. 'We went to the police station to open a case. Councilors from ANC, NCC, EFF and GOOD who were witnesses, gave statements. "Let's say hypothetically speaking, I was wrong in terms of the rules, they carry their own opinion but there is no councillor that must be choked, the way that they dealt with it could have been better. Trump says tariffs are making US 'great and rich' again
US President Donald Trump Image: Peter Zay / AFP US President Donald Trump said Thursday that the sweeping tariffs he has imposed on nations around the world were making the country "great & rich again" as governments raced to strike deals with Washington less than 24 hours before an August 1 deadline. "Tariffs are making America GREAT & RICH Again," he wrote on his Truth Social platform. "ONE YEAR AGO, AMERICA WAS A DEAD COUNTRY, NOW IT IS THE "HOTTEST" COUNTRY ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD," he added. A day earlier, the US President imposed new tariffs to punish or favor several major trading partners -- the latest round of sweeping measures that have roiled markets around the world. South Korea squeezed in at the last moment, securing agreement on a 15 percent tariff for exports to the United States -- significantly below the 25 percent that Trump had earlier threatened to introduce. But Trump also announced crippling 50 percent tariffs on Brazil and a 25 percent levy on Indian exports, while warning Canada it would face trade repercussions for planning to recognize a Palestinian state. Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine," the US president wrote on his Truth Social platform. "That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them." 'Big day for America' He also signed an order Wednesday to impose previously threatened 50 percent tariffs on certain copper products and end a tariff exemption for low-value shipments from abroad. It left out products like copper ores, concentrates and cathodes, bringing some relief to industry. As Trump's deal deadline neared, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told Fox News that Washington had struck trade deals with Cambodia and Thailand, but provided no details of the accords. The US tariff hikes due Friday were initially announced in April as part of a package in which Trump slapped a minimum 10 percent levy on goods from almost all trading partners -- citing unfair trade practices. This rate was set to rise to varying levels for dozens of economies such as the European Union, Japan and others, but Washington twice postponed their implementation as financial markets gyrated. The US leader insisted Wednesday that the August 1 deadline "will not be extended" any further. So far, Britain, Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, the EU and South Korea have reached initial deals with Washington to secure less punishing conditions. While the United States and China earlier slapped escalating tariffs on each other's products, both sides are working to further a truce maintaining duties at lower levels. Although Trump has promised a surge in government revenues from his duties, economists warn that higher tariffs can fuel an uptick in inflation and weigh on economic growth. AFP

'Boy Mamabolo was my ice boy', says Malema
EFF leader Julius Malema has taken a swipe at former ANC MP Jacob Boy Mamabolo, claiming he was his 'ice boy' — a person who is broke and acts as an errands runner for wealthier friends. The two Seshego-born politicians go way back. They were in the ANC Youth League together, with Malema being the president until his expulsion in 2012. They also served together in the Congress of South African Students. In an interview with EWN, Malema said he used to send Mamabolo out to do things for him. 'To call [former EFF member Mbuyiseni] Ndlozi an ice boy was an extreme insult; he had a role to play, he was a spokesperson. Boy Mamabolo was my ice boy,' Malema said. 'I used to send him to fetch girls, send him to buy ice and alcohol. He didn't have an opinion, even now he doesn't have an opinion. He was useful for such things.'
