Jordan Henderson joins Brentford on free transfer from Ajax

ENGLAND midfielder Jordan Henderson has signed for Brentford on a free transfer, marking his return to the Premier League after stints with Ajax and Al-Ettifaq. The 35-year-old agreed to a two-year deal with the Bees, expressing his excitement about competing in the English top flight once again. Henderson, who left Liverpool in 2023, said, 'After a couple of years away, I still have that fire to come back and play in the Premier League again. Obviously, it's the best league in the world, with the best players. So it's a big challenge but one I'm keen on doing.' The move reunites Henderson with English football after a turbulent period that saw him leave Saudi Arabia's Al-Ettifaq just six months into a lucrative deal, followed by a short but impactful spell at Ajax. Despite criticism over his Saudi move, Henderson remains focused on his career, stating, 'When I was given the opportunity by Brentford and after speaking with the club, it became an easy decision.' Brentford's new manager, Keith Andrews, highlighted Henderson's leadership qualities as a key factor in the signing. 'He's been one of the most influential leaders in modern Premier League years,' Andrews said. 'With experienced players leaving, it was important to replace that presence.' Henderson, who has 84 England caps, could face emotional reunions with former clubs Sunderland and Liverpool in the upcoming season. 'Both clubs mean a lot to me,' he acknowledged. 'But when I'm playing against them, there's no friends—we know that in football.' The midfielder's career includes major trophies such as the 2019 Champions League and 2020 Premier League title with Liverpool. His return to England could also boost his chances of adding to his international caps under manager Thomas Tuchel. - AFP

Selangor find their new playmaker in Clough after Orozco's exit

PETALING JAYA: Selangor are set to have a new chief playmaker at their disposal and he comes from England. Zach Clough (pic) is the man for the job and the news was broken by their former player and Australian football pundit Robbie Cornthwaite. 'Adelaide United midfielder Zach Clough has signed for Malaysian Super League giants Selangor,' he tweeted yesterday. The move will whet the appetite of Selangor fans, especially after the departure of Venezuelan playmaker Yohandry Orozco during the off-season. Clough brings with him a wealth of experience, creativity, and technical flair that Selangor hope will elevate their midfield to new heights. The 30-year-old playmaker is well known for his intelligence on the ball, sharp passing range, and an eye for goal, all attributes that have made him a standout in the English Football League and Australia's top tier. Having started his career at Bolton Wanderers, Clough quickly made a name for himself as one of the most exciting young talents in English football. He scored 21 goals in 68 appearances for Bolton and also had stints with Nottingham Forest and Wigan Athletic. Injuries may have disrupted parts of his career but at his best, Clough remains a dynamic attacking midfielder with an instinctive ability to unlock defences. At Adelaide United, Clough found his rhythm again, becoming a central figure in their attacking set-up. His vision and control in tight spaces proved vital for the Reds and his ability to drop deep and dictate play often allowed others around him to flourish. Last season in the A-League, he played 27 matches, scoring seven and making nine assists. Selangor's move for Clough signals their intent to challenge for silverware and build on the steady progress they made under coach Katsuhito Kinoshi. Clough is expected to slot into an advanced midfield role, potentially just behind the striker, where his ability to thread through passes and take on defenders could provide Selangor with the attacking edge they need. He could also be deployed as a winger. Fans of the Red Giants will be eager to see how quickly Clough adapts to the tempo and physicality of Malaysian football. However, given his technical style and prior experience adjusting to different leagues, there is confidence that he will make an immediate impact.

Soccer-Leicester appoint Cifuentes as manager

Leicester parted ways with former manager Ruud van Nistelrooy last month following the club's relegation to the English second tier after finishing 18th in the Premier League. "This is a fantastic club with a proud history and it's a privilege to me to be asked to help write the next chapter," Cifuentes said in a statement shared by Leicester. The Spaniard, 43, previously coached Hammarby, whom he led to a Swedish Cup final and UEFA Conference League qualification. He took over at QPR in October 2023. QPR put Cifuentes on gardening leave in April, ahead of their final game of the Championship season, as they finished 15th, seven points clear of the relegation zone. Leicester begin their 2025-26 Championship campaign at home against Sheffield Wednesday on August 10. (Reporting by Chiranjit Ojha in BengaluruEditing by Toby Davis)
