Trout hits tying homer and Newman adds 3-run shot in 7th as Angels beat Nationals

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Mike Trout hit a tying homer that sparked a six-run seventh inning, Kevin Newman added a three-run shot and the Los Angeles Angels rolled to an 8-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday night. Kyle Hendricks gave up one run in five innings and rookie Christian Moore delivered the go-ahead single with two outs in the seventh. Gustavo Campero also homered for the Angels. CJ Abrams went deep for the Nationals, and Michael Soroka pitched six innings of two-hit ball. Washington took a 2-1 lead in the seventh on Riley Adams' RBI single off Ryan Zeferjahn (5-1). Trout connected against Zach Brzykcy (0-1) leading off the bottom half for his 13th home run. Los Angeles then sent 11 more batters to the plate in the inning, with Taylor Ward (double), Jo Adell (single) and Moore contributing important hits. Newman, batting ninth, launched his first homer this season off Eduardo Salazar for a 6-2 lead. Luis Rengifo's double and Ward's bases-loaded walk made it 7-2. Campero homered in the eighth. The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the second when Ward was hit by a pitch and scored on Logan O'Hoppe's double-play grounder. The Nationals tied it in the fifth on Abrams' 12th homer. Soroka struck out five and walked one in a no-decision. Salazar struck out O'Hoppe and got Zach Neto to pop out with runners on first and third in the seventh and was one strike from escaping the jam when Moore hammered a 1-2 fastball above the zone for an RBI single and a 3-2 Angels lead. Soroka entered with a 3.49 ERA through five innings and a 22.85 ERA in the sixth. But after giving up Newman's leadoff single in the sixth, the right-hander started a 1-6-3 double play on Rengifo's grounder and got Nolan Schanuel to pop out to preserve a 1-all tie.

Dodgers Get Bad News on Acquiring Emmanuel Clase

Dodgers Get Bad News on Acquiring Emmanuel Clase originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to be buyers ahead of the trade deadline this season, just like they have in past years. And thanks to another recent trend (injuries that have placed a double-digit number of pitchers on the injured list), the Dodgers will look to add arms to both their bullpen and rotation. Advertisement As far as bullpen pieces go, Emmanuel Clase has emerged as a valuable trade candidate for contending teams – only if the Cleveland Guardians, who are 40-40 and 9.5 games behind the division-leading Detroit Tigers, decide to let him go. Clase, one of MLB's top closers, is an attractive commodity not only because of his quality, but also because of his three-plus years of control. ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel placed the Dodgers on a list of teams that Clase would make a good fit for, and the Dodgers have plenty of capital to make a potential deal work. But another insider, MLB Network's Jon Morosi, said the baseball world needs to pump the brakes on potential trades involving the three-time All-Star. "There's plenty of speculation now. Will he be available?" Morosi said on a segment of MLB Central on Saturday. "I would say, right now, the odds are still against a Clase trade this year at the deadline." Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts (30) during the second inning against the San Diego Padres at Dodger Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images Morosi noted, though, that Clase's trade value has climbed as the season has progressed. Morosi said it was down in March and April (6.75 ERA, just five saves) after negative momentum from Clase's postseason struggles carried into 2025. But Clase has since rebounded with a 0.84 ERA and seven saves in May, and a 1.69 ERA and six saves thus far in June. Advertisement Even though early indications show that Clase is unlikely to be dealt, Morosi said not to completely write that possibility off just yet. "Because so many teams are in the race, it could create a scenario where, because there's scarcity of supply, that a team that really needs a closer – maybe its the [Philadelphia] Phillies, maybe it's even the Dodgers, when you consider their injuries this season – will overwhelm the Guardians," Morosi said. "The Guardians are one of those teams that are, even when they're in, at least, hold or buy mode, they keep an open ear because of their financial situation." Through 36 total appearances this season, Clase has pitched to a 4-1 record, 3.38 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 36 strikeouts across 34.2 innings.
