Chemical weapons watchdog again finds banned tear gas in Ukraine samples - War in Ukraine
The international chemical weapons watchdog said Thursday that it had found a banned tear gas in seven samples submitted by Ukraine, which has accused Russia of using the riot control agent on the front line.
It was the third time the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has confirmed the use of CS gas in areas where fighting is taking place in Ukraine.
The OPCW, based in The Hague, said the toxic agent was present in samples from two grenade shells, two soil samples, two vegetation samples, and the remains of a drone.
The watchdog also collected documents, digital files, and direct testimonies, it said.
The report did not blame either Ukraine or Russia for the use of the substance, which is banned in war zones.
The Chemical Weapons Convention prohibits the use of riot control agents, including CS gas, "as a method of warfare".
Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of using chemical weapons in the three-year-old conflict.
The OPCW had previously reported confirmations of the presence of CS gas in samples provided by Ukraine in November 2024 and in February this year.
"The repeated discovery of riot-control agent grenades near active conflict zones in the Dnipropetrovsk region is deeply concerning," OPCW director general Fernando Arias said, noting "the pressing need to reinforce adherence to the Chemical Weapons Convention".

'The Egyptian-Israeli peace experience in the 1970s, brokered by the United States, is a testament that peace is only possible when intentions are sincere,' he stressed. President El-Sisi also described the people as the backbone, protective shield, and beating heart of the nation. He affirmed that Egypt's strength lies not only in its weapons, but also in its people's awareness and unity, as well as their rejection of any attempts at division and hatred. Acknowledging the country's heavy burdens and significant challenges, President El-Sisi affirmed that easing the citizens' burdens comes at the top of the state's priorities, especially amid the increasing regional unrest. Egypt extends condolences to Sudan following deadly gold mine collapse - Foreign Affairs

Iran-Israel war opens 'new road' for Mideast: US envoy to Turkey - Region
The Iran-Israel war has opened the way to a "new road" for the Middle East in which Turkey will have a key role to play, Washington's envoy to Turkey said Sunday. "What just happened between Israel and Iran is an opportunity for all of us to say: 'Time out. Let's create a new road' (and) Turkiye is key in that new road," Ambassador Tom Barrack told the Anadolu state news agency. "The Middle East is ready to have a new dialogue, people are tired of the same old story," he said, saying it was essential for decades-long enmities to be reframed. Israel, he said, was "in the process of being redefined" and its regional neighbours needed to reach agreement with it. "(Syrian) President (Ahmed) al-Sharaa has indicated that he doesn't hate Israel and that he wants peace on that border. I think that will also happen with Lebanon. It's a necessity to have an agreement with Israel," he said. What is happening in Syria is "in big part due to Turkey" -- a key backer of the Islamist-led rebels who toppled Bashar al-Assad and now form the Damascus government -- and Turkey could play a central role in changing the regional narrative, he said. US President Donald Trump and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan "see that this is an opportunity at a really interesting point in both of their lives where they can change the dialogue," he said. "And dialogue in the Middle East takes strong leadership." Barrack also said he believed there would be a ceasefire soon in Israel's 20-month war on Gaza, which would also speed up a shift in regional thinking. "We're going to see a ceasefire in Gaza in the near future, I think we have the right team on it," he told Anadolu. "Everybody is starting to move back towards the Abraham Accords, especially as the Gaza situation dissipates," he said referring to the US-sponsored agreements struck by Israel to normalise ties with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco. And he expressed confidence that Turkey and Israel -- whose relationship has been shattered by the Gaza war -- would resume their former ties. "It can happen again, it's not a religious issue, it's a misunderstanding of territorial desires. So having a discussion, a dialogue.. will take place."
