‘Brighter Meals' Lead To Mass Poisoning At China Kindergarten, 230 Kids Hospitalised
Authorities arrested six kindergarten staff and are investigating 27 others after over 230 children in Gansu were poisoned by food contaminated with lead pigment.
Chinese authorities arrested six kindergarten staff and launched disciplinary investigations into 27 others after more than 230 children in Gansu province were poisoned by food contaminated with industrial-grade lead pigment. The incident, which took place earlier this month at the Brownstone Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui city, is being described as one of the worst school food safety scandals in recent Chinese history.
An investigative report released by the Gansu provincial party committee cited widespread failures, misconduct and cover-ups at nearly every level of oversight, from school administrators to public health and government officials.
According to the report, the kindergarten's principal instructed kitchen staff to enhance the visual appeal of meals by adding brightly coloured pigment to the food with the aim of boosting enrolments. The school cook purchased industrial-grade colourants online despite packaging clearly marked 'not for consumption."
One of the pigments was later found to contain lead levels 400,000 times above the legal safety limit. The kindergarten had previously used food-safe dyes but reportedly switched to the more toxic version because it produced more vivid colours.
Hundreds Of Children Affected
Initial reports said 235 children were hospitalised after eating the tainted meals, with symptoms including stomach pain, vomiting and in some cases even blackened teeth. Subsequent testing confirmed that 247 children and several staff members- including the principal- had elevated levels of lead in their blood. While most students have since been discharged from hospital, the provincial government said the case caused 'deep sorrow" and issued a formal apology to affected families.
Institutional Failure And Cover-Up Revealed
The official report accuses multiple institutions of negligence and misconduct in both the lead-up to and aftermath of the poisoning. The Gansu Provincial Centre for Disease Control and Prevention was faulted for violating health protocols while collecting samples, resulting in test results that vastly understated the true scale of contamination.
The local education bureau was also heavily criticized for allowing the kindergarten to operate without a valid license. Authorities admitted that no food safety inspections had been conducted at private kindergartens in the area for at least two years.

India-UK FTA to boost bilateral trade for pharma, medtech, say industry bodies
The India-UK free trade agreement, signed on Thursday, is expected to open up new opportunities for Indian pharmaceutical and medical device makers. The deal is also expected to improve access to medical devices from the UK in India. Medical device manufacturers anticipate an increase in trade between the two countries but are awaiting clarity on non-tariff measures and on whether regulatory processes will be streamlined. 'Previously, medical devices imported into the UK were duty-free, so tariff restrictions were not an issue but regulatory approval costs and time were a challenge,' said Rajiv Nath, forum coordinator of industry body Association of Indian Medical Device Industry (Aimed). The body had previously sought recognition of regulatory approvals from the CDSCO or the Quality Council of India's voluntary Indian Certification for medical devices to fast-track approvals by the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). 'We look forward to an update on this,' said Nath. However, medtech manufacturers are also seeking strict monitoring of imports to India, to prevent other countries rerouting products into India through the UK. Mint had previously reported that domestic manufacturers raised concerns over the possibility of Chinese-origin products being routed through the UK to exploit the zero-tariff provisions under the FTA. India levies about 7.5% import duties on medical devices from the UK, which are expected to come down in a phased manner after the deal, Nath said. In 2024, medical device exports to the UK increased by 13% year-on-year to ₹ 1,015 crore, while imports from the UK rose 36% to ₹ 2,295 crore, according to Exim data. 'It not only strengthens trade ties but also opens new avenues for advanced technology collaborations between Indian and UK companies,' Himanshu Baid, managing director of Poly Medicure Ltd, said in a statement. 'With India exporting medical devices worth approximately $115 million to the UK, one of our top 10 export destinations, this agreement is poised to further boost our presence,' he added. The trade deal is also expected to open up the market for India's generic drugmakers. 'As per the indications, the pharma sector will have opportunities to supply affordable and quality assured medicine contributing to better patient care in the UK,' said Sudarshan Jain, secretary general of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA). 'We are awaiting further details to identify specific areas where these opportunities can be effectively leveraged,' he added. Generic players like Lupin, Biocon, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and Wockhardt, which have exposure to the UK market, could stand to benefit.

Ayush ministry reaffirms commitment to promote evidence-based practices
New Delhi, Jul 24 (PTI)The National Expert Committee constituted by the Ayush ministry undertook a rigorous review of scientific, pharmacological and traditional data to refine safety documentation for four selected herbs. How Did Hulk Hogan Pass Away? Decoding The WWE Legend's Cause Of Death
Last Updated: Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, born Terry Gene Bollea, has died at 71. Emergency responders were called to his Clearwater, Florida home for a cardiac emergency. Professional wrestling icon Hulk Hogan has died at the age of 71, according to a report from TMZ. Emergency responders were dispatched to Hogan's residence in Clearwater, Florida, early Thursday morning following a call reporting a cardiac emergency. While no official statement has been released by Hogan's family, early indications suggest the cause of death was cardiac arrest. A Storied Wrestling Career Born Terry Gene Bollea, Hogan began his professional wrestling journey in 1977. He rose to global superstardom after joining the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) in 1983. During his prime, Hogan was one of wrestling's most recognizable faces. He headlined eight of the first nine WrestleMania events and helped bring professional wrestling into mainstream pop culture. After leaving the WWF in 1993, he explored a career in film and television but remained a dominant figure in sports entertainment. Over the course of his storied career, Hogan captured the WWF/WWE Championship six times. His contributions to the industry were honored with two inductions into the WWE Hall of Fame. While Hogan's time in the ring brought fame and fortune, it also came with significant physical consequences. Over the past decade alone, he reportedly underwent 26 surgeries, including ten on his back. The wear and tear stemmed from wrestling during the sport's physically punishing 'golden age" in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Beyond his spine, Hogan had operations on his eyes, stomach, knees, hips, and shoulders. In 2013, he filed a $50 million lawsuit against the Laser Spine Institute, alleging that the facility convinced him to undergo 'unnecessary and ineffective" spinal surgeries. In recent months, rumors about Hogan's declining health had circulated online. However, his representatives consistently pushed back against exaggerated claims. They confirmed that Hogan had undergone spinal fusion and heart procedures, but stressed that none were life-threatening. Despite his medical history, Hogan remained active and resilient. Just last month, he was hospitalized for neck and back issues and underwent a cervical fusion procedure, described by his team as a 'minor" surgery. Following the operation, speculation that he was on his 'deathbed" spread rapidly. These claims were quickly refuted by Hogan's camp, which reassured fans that he was recovering well. But alas, it seems as if the wrestling world has now lost a legend. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
