Chris Martin and Katy Perry motivate crowds at Invictus Games opening ceremony
Canadian singer Nelly Furtado and Quebec alt-pop star Roxane Bruneau also performed at BC Place in Vancouver as the seventh edition of the games began on Saturday.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex watched the ceremony, cheering on the performers and competitors when they took to the stage.
For his opening number, Martin delivered a moving rendition of the Invictus Games anthem, which he created in 2014 using the lyrics of the Invictus poem by William Ernest Henley, while accompanied by the Universal Gospel Choir.
He then picked up his guitar to play and sing Coldplay's hit Higher Power alongside four backing singers.
Between the songs he thanked Harry for inviting him to perform, saying: 'I'd like to say thanks, of course, to Prince Harry.
'When he called me he said, 'I've called every other musician in the world, they all said they're not available so I have to call you'. And I said 'Your royal holiness, I'm honoured.'
'But thank you Harry for being such an inspiring leader and kind and sweet man, and I hope you have the most wonderful games of all. And it's a pleasure to be here.'
He finished his set by playing the band's 2008 classic Viva La Vida while the backing singers provided harmonies before he was joined again by the choir.
The singer was proceeded by a bagpipe player delivering a solo performance before a full bagpipe and drumming band performed.
Perry kicked off her performance with a rendition of her motivational hit Roar after Harry delivered his speech to the arena.
The US pop star then launched into a high-energy medley of her tracks Dark Horse, Part Of Me and Lifetimes while dressed in a futuristic, silver cut-out outfit.
She thanked the ceremony for having her and the service personnel and veterans for their service before closing with her megahit Firework alongside a full marching band, a dance troupe and large yellow dancing figures.
The ceremony also saw British Columbia-born Furtado perform a medley of her hits including I'm Like a Bird, Turn Off The Light and Say It Right.
The singer, dressed in a black jumpsuit, encouraged the crowd to sing along to the performance as a dance troupe joined her on stage.
US singer-songwriter Noah Kahan took to the stage to perform a rousing rendition of his song Northern Attitude alongside his band which got members of the crowd chanting along.
Kahan said it was an 'honour' to be at the games before he launched into his viral hit Stick Season.
The ceremony opened with a performance by members of the traditional territories as the Invictus Games are being held on the land of indigenous nations Lil'wat, Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh.
More than 500 competitors from 23 nations will take part in the games, which go on until Sunday February 16.
Harry, a former British Army captain, launched the Invictus Games in 2014 as an international sports tournament for injured service personnel and veterans.
The games aim to 'inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for those who have served their country', the Royal British Legion said.
The Invictus Games were held in London in 2014, in Orlando in 2016, Toronto in 2017, Sydney in 2018, The Hague in 2022 and Dusseldorf in 2023.

Hopes have been raised that the channel of communication between Prince Harry and King Charles is beginning to open - and an expert has predicted what this could mean for Meghan Markle After months of radio silence, there seems to be a flicker of hope that the relationship between Prince Harry and his father, King Charles, could potentially be mended. Of course, a potential reunion between Harry and Charles could have a wide-ranging effect, not least on Meghan, who has been building her business empire of late after launching her As Ever lifestyle brand. So would she welcome a reunion, too? Well, according to BBC royal expert Jennie Bond, she believes Meghan would definitely be supportive. She explained to the Mirror: "It's important to remember that the King and Meghan had a warm and affectionate relationship at the start. Harry wrote about how jovial and animated his father was when they used to visit him, for example, talking to Meghan about music. "And they were both touched by his fatherly gesture of walking her down part of the aisle at their wedding. Of course, a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then, and emotions are still running high. But my belief is that Meghan loves Harry and wants him to be happy. "And if a reconciliation with his father, which he has said he wants, will make him happy, then I think Meghan would be supportive. "I think she would also welcome the chance for her children to get to know their grandfather and understand their heritage. There are unconfirmed reports that she used to send him videos of the children before the rift with Harry became so deep. "There's no doubt that the King would be delighted to have the chance to know Archie and Lilibet. He has already missed so much of their young lives, and children grow up so quickly." In recent months, Harry and Meghan's careers have gone in different directions, with Harry concentrating on charity and philanthropic efforts and Meghan focusing on her business ventures. So would a potential reconciliation have repercussions for Meghan's business? Jennie added: "I don't see that she is doing anything commercially that is distasteful or problematic. After all, the King sells jams and a wide range of products - admittedly only for charity. "As long as she doesn't do anything that would cause embarrassment for the Royal Family, I don't see any difficulties. She and Harry have made a clean break as far as being official working royals are concerned. But I think most people would hope that a now elderly father and his son could be reconciled before it's too late. "Remember what Charles said to William and Harry as they fought in the gardens of Frogmore House after the late Duke of Edinburgh's funeral: 'Please, boys, don't make my final years a misery'. A reconciliation could still be a very long way away….but if it happens, Harry will have gone some way to fulfilling his father's wish." One party that didn't seem involved in the so-called peace summit last week was Prince William. According to a source, he remains "deeply wounded" by Harry and has no plans to contact him, even if he reconciles with other Royal Family members. And Jennie said it would be a much harder task to reconcile the brothers - especially after Harry's barbs about his sister-in-law, Kate. She said: "It is a hugely difficult situation for a father, with loyal William at his side and rebellious Harry in California. The brothers are still miles apart in every sense. I imagine the King would have warned William about the meeting. I hope so, anyway. "I think William might find it in his heart to forgive Harry's jibes about their sibling rivalry, his indiscretions about their disagreements and fights. But I don't think he is in any way ready to forgive Harry for hurting Catherine and revealing a row about bridesmaids' dresses and a disagreement about lip gloss. Never say never, but reconciliation between William and Harry still seems a very distant prospect."

Baseball broadcaster Jason Benetti made a hilarious reference to the Coldplay kisscam scandal on Friday as Rangers pitcher Chris Martin warmed up on the mound. The internet was set ablaze this week when a man was seen with his arms wrapped around a woman at the band's show in Boston, before both immediately ducked and turned from the cameras after realizing their faces were on the big screen. On Saturday, billion-dollar software company Astronomer announced Byron's resignation in a statement. 'As stated previously, Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met,' the statement said. 'Andy Byron has tendered his resignation, and the Board of Directors has accepted.'

The I'm A Celebrity… South Africa all stars series is officially returning to ITV later in 2025—and not one but two legendary jungle stars are in talks to come back. Starting in 2024, I'm A Celebrity… South Africa reunites old campmates from the ITV game show. This time, however, they're trading the Australian jungle for the desert. Last series saw the likes of Shaun Ryder, Gillian McKeith, Helen Flanagan, Phil Tufnell, and Jordan Banjo giving up luxuries for a gruelling challenge once more. Gemma infamously only managed three days in the Jungle when she was last on the show and made no secret of how much she hated every second. Gemma's tears and tantrums gave social media a meme collection that still gets used today, so it's no surprise she's wanted back. A source told The Sun previously: 'She hated it first time round, but knows it would be TV gold for her fans if she gave it another go. 'The discussions could go either way, but signing her would be a huge win for execs.' For Gemma fans hoping she'll give I'm A Celebrity a second try, the recent rumours line up very nicely with comments the Dancing On Ice star made in 2019. Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show, she said: 'I will never forget getting the call. Looking back, I don't feel I was ready for that show. I was new to TV; I was the underdog on Towie. She then withdrew due to panic attacks and later said that her ex-boyfriend, Alexander Moss, had 'severely beaten' her the night before she joined. The reality star said that ITV advised against her entering at first, but Gemma insisted she didn't want to waste the opportunity of a lifetime. Alexander, now 44, was eventually jailed for 21 months in 2019.
