Another train sabotage attempt foiled in UP; probe underway
Senior superintendent of police Anurag Arya stated that a special team has been constituted to identify and apprehend those responsible.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 11:55 pm on June 1, when the crew of the 05307 Tanakpur-Bareilly City passenger train noticed irregularities on the track and promptly halted the train. On inspection, they discovered that miscreants had stuffed ballast, the crushed stones used to stabilise railway tracks between the tongue rail and stock rail, effectively jamming the point mechanism, which guides trains safely between tracks.
Additionally, the earthing plate, a vital component connecting the Overhead Equipment (OHE) to the Switch Expansion Joint Rail (SWJR), was found bent. The SWJR is critical for allowing rails to expand and contract with temperature variations while maintaining track integrity.
Station master Bhupinder Arora of Dohna reported the sabotage to higher authorities via a memo. The Izzatnagar division of North Eastern Railway confirmed the incident and lodged an FIR at Bhojipura station under Section 150 of the Indian Railway Act, which deals with malicious acts intended to wreck trains.
This latest attempt is part of a disturbing trend in the region. On May 31, loco-pilots of the 64021 Delhi–Shamli MEMU train narrowly avoided a mishap when they spotted an iron pipe, ballast, and broken concrete obstructing the tracks near Shamli station. Similarly, on the night of May 29–30, ballast was found on the tracks between Bheerpur and Meja Road in Prayagraj, targeting the New Delhi–Bhubaneswar Tejas Rajdhani Express (22824). Earlier on May 19, two more sabotage attempts were reported near Dalelnagar and Umar Tali stations in Hardoi district, where wooden logs were placed on the tracks to derail the Delhi–Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express (20504) and Kathgodam Express (15044).

Cops perform last rites of accident victim
Lucknow: Police personnel stepped far beyond the call of duty when they performed the last rites of a woman on Wednesday whose own family refused to claim her body after she died tragically under a speeding train. The victim, identified as Sunita (40), daughter of Banshiram from Danda Sikandarpur, was found dead near OHE pole number 1049/5 on Monday night in Mohanlalganj. She reportedly left her marital home five years ago to live with a man named Santram—an act that estranged her from her parents and three brothers. When police informed the family, they refused to accept her body, citing dishonour and broken ties. Despite repeated appeals and efforts to console them, the family stood firm in their rejection. It was the local police who took the moral responsibility of giving Sunita a dignified farewell. Her body was sent for post-mortem and later cremated with full Hindu rites under the supervision of the police. "In a society often quick to judge, it was the men and women of law enforcement agencies who rose with empathy," said former Pradhan from Mohanlalganj, Shiva Mishra.

Alert train driver averts accident in Sealdah division
An alert driver of an EMU train running on the Deula-Magrahat railway line in the Sealdah division averted an accident on Wednesday (July 9, 2025) after he halted the vehicle on seeing sleepers blocking the track. As part of the July 9 general strike called by some trade unions, the protesters blocked the rail line with sleepers. Also, banana leaves were thrown on Overhead Equipment (OHE) wires between Deula and Magrahat stations, threatening the movement of trains and safety of passengers. The railway staff acted promptly and ensured undisturbed train services. In a statement, the Sealdah Railway Division warned strict action against the culprits who indulge in such activities, endangering the lives of passengers. Rajeev Saxena, Sealdah's Divisional Railway Manager, urged all citizens to behave in a responsible manner and co-operate with railway workers.
