Declassified Report Sheds New Light on ‘Clinton Plan' Emails

Epoch Times4 days ago
Former special counsel John Durham assessed that two emails describing a 2016 Clinton campaign plan to smear then-candidate Donald Trump by linking him with Russian hackers were likely fake, even though the campaign appeared to be carrying out the purported plan.
The revelation is part of a newly declassified annex to the Durham report released by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on July 31.

Haley questions Trump's trade moves with China, India

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley on Tuesday questioned President Trump's trade moves with China and India, warning that the U.S. shouldn't 'burn' its relationship with India. 'India should not be buying oil from Russia. But China, an adversary and the number one buyer of Russian and Iranian oil, got a 90-day tariff pause,' Haley said in a post on the social platform X. 'Don't give China a pass and burn a relationship with a strong ally like India,' she added. On Monday, Trump said he would raise tariffs on India over buying and selling oil from Moscow, asserting the country did not care about the Ukrainian casualties due to the war with Russia. Trump did not say the amount the tariff will rise on India, after he said he would impose a 25 percent tariff on the trading partner in July. 'India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits,' Trump said on Truth Social. 'They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine,' he added. 'Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA.' In May, the United States and China said they agreed to a 90-day pause on a majority of retaliatory tariffs imposed on each other since the beginning of April, when Trump unveiled his expansive global tariff plan and ratcheted up his trade war with China. American and Chinese officials last week agreed to continued discussions on extending tariff rates via the 90-day truce.

Donald Trump Aims New US Sanctions at Russian Fleet: Report

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Trump administration is weighing additional sanctions on Russia's so-called "shadow fleet" of oil tankers if President Vladimir Putin does not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine by Friday, The Financial Times reported. Two people familiar with the White House's internal discussions told the FT that further measures against the fleet are viewed as a relatively straightforward way to increase pressure on Russia. A third person close to the administration told the news outlet that the U.S. is considering a broader set of options, but sanctions on the shadow fleet remain under consideration. As major generators of Russia's export revenues, oil and natural gas have been the focus of western-led sanctions to choke Moscow's war machine. However, Russia has set up a shadow fleet of vessels to circumvent a price cap on seaborne oil and the export continues to swell the Kremlin's coffers. Russia's piped natural gas industry has been hit hard by the war. But seaborne LNG exports from Russia to the EU are on the rise and Russian-built carriers are becoming an increasingly important part of the shadow fleet. Blacklisting ships in the fleet would represent the first U.S. sanctions on Moscow since Donald Trump returned to the White House in January. The shadow fleet typically avoids using Western insurers, flag registries, and other maritime services, making enforcement of sanctions on vessel owners difficult. This is a breaking news story. Updates to follow.

Justice Department opens grand jury probe into investigation of Trump and Russia: Reports

The Justice Department has escalated efforts to investigate those behind the years-old probe into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election by launching a grand jury probe. The Justice Department has opened a grand jury investigation into allegations that Obama administration officials broke the law when they investigated Russia's involvement in the 2016 presidential election, according to news reports. Attorney General Pam Bondi signed an order Aug. 4 directing a federal prosecutor to present evidence to the grand jury, Fox News and the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the investigation. The Justice Department declined to comment. The move marks a major escalation of the Trump administration's efforts to investigate the investigators behind the years-old probe. Robert Mueller, who ultimately took over the probe as special counsel, concluded that the Russian government interfered to help then-presidential candidate Donald Trump defeat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, but that there was not evidence anyone in the Trump campaign colluded with Russia. The new criminal probe follows allegations National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbardmade at a July 23 press briefing that the Obama administration pushed a 'contrived narrative' that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to benefit Trump. That same day, the Justice Department announced it was creating a "Strike Force" to assess evidence highlighted by Gabbard and "investigate potential next legal steps." When Trump was asked on July 22 about his Justice Department's conduct when it comes to investigating convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Trump pointed to allegations from Gabbard, saying she caught Obama "absolutely cold" and Obama had committed treason. Obama responded that Trump's remarks were a "weak attempt at distraction." Contributing: Sudiksha Kochi, Kinsey Crowley - USA TODAY
