BBC News3 days ago
Sonay Kartal continued her impressive form at Wimbledon by becoming the first British player to reach round three this year with a dominant victory over Viktoriya Tomova. After two days of blistering heat the start to Wednesday's play was delayed by more than two hours because of rain in the morning. But once the action did begin British number three Kartal followed up her impressive first-round win against 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko by quickly despatching of Tomova 6-2 6-2.It is the second year in a row Kartal has reached the third round at Wimbledon."I felt good in the warm-up and on court I felt good. I was seeing it and hitting it very clean. It was one of those good days in the office," Kartal said.
"I wanted to back up the run I had last year. I wanted to show that I am at this level now and I can consistently play."The last couple of months I have thrown myself on the scene. This year I made a conscious effort to only play the bigger matches. I am feeling much more confidence in my game."After getting the first break of serve in the sixth game of the opening set Kartal really got into her stride, hitting some impressive winners that her opponent struggled to cope with before breaking again at 5-2 up to take the first set.It did not get any better for Tomova in the second set as Kartal won the first four games to asset her dominance.Tomova managed to break Kartal's serve in the fifth game but it only delayed the Briton's march to an excellent win.Next up for Kartal is a match against world number 15 Diana Shnaider or qualifier Diane Parry.

EXCLUSIVE Pack your Wags: England star's estranged wife splashes out £2m from her divorce settlement on new home

Kieran Trippier 's estranged wife is splashing out on a new 'divorce home' - and his former England teammate Marcus Rashford will be one of her neighbours. MailOnline can reveal Charlotte Trippier, 36, has had an offer accepted on the five-bedroom Cheshire property worth nearly £2million. The WAG confirmed her split from the Newcastle defender, 34, last month, admitting they have been separated for over a year in which time Trippier has been seen enjoying the company of multiple women, including Geordie Shore star Chloe Ferry. Charlotte is keen to land the new property as it's close to the school where their two eldest children attend and she feels it will signal a new start for them all. A source said: 'Charlotte has been looking for properties for some time and she believes the house in Cheshire is perfect. 'She'll have familiar faces nearby as it's a hotbed for fellow WAGs and it's a great place to lay down roots. 'And if she needs a cup of sugar, she only has to pop over the road to see Marcus.' The detached property includes four 'luxury' bathrooms, a mammoth 32ft living-dining kitchen and a heated outdoor swimming pool. The WAG and soon-to-be ex-husband Trippier put their £3.8million mansion in Northumberland up for sale last September amid rumours the pair, who married in 2016, were living separate lives. Charlotte, who shares three children with the ex-England ace - Jacob, eight, Esme, six, and Isla, three - unfollowed the full-back on Instagram before last summer's Euros and did not attend any of the games in Germany, unlike other WAGs, sparking the first fears the pair were on the verge of splitting. The interior designer also posted a cryptic message on the social media platform before England final group match, which read: 'Sooner or later you get over the s*** you swore you'd never get over and it's the best feeling in the world.' Before the tournament, Trippier was snapped celebrating Newcastle's European qualification by lifting up a blonde girl while partying with teammates at a packed karaoke bar. He cuddled the woman before wrapping his arms around her and then picking her up by the bottom. Charlotte ditched her wedding ring around this time as the pair drifted apart, even holidaying separately. The WAG was also absent from Newcastle's games and did not appear on the pitch alongside Trippier and their three children on the final home game of the season. Charlotte broke her silence last month to confirm their break-up. She said: 'I just wanted to let you know that I am fine, obviously I am not ready to talk about my situation. 'In time I will, when I am comfortable and the time is right, also I have three young children so I don't want to be putting things out there for them to see. 'But yeah i just wanted to let everyone know its not that bad and you can get through it once you make the decision.' She went on: 'You can get through it. The sparkle does come back, I feel like I am getting my glow back again and yeah, like, you will get there.' Tripper confirmed the split the previous week in the wake of being pictured with scantily-clad women in Ibiza. He wrote on Instagram: 'I have never commented on my private life but the tabloids seem to want to continue writing false narratives,' 'I feel I have no choice but to confirm publicly that myself and Charlotte separated over a year ago. I have not commented previously as it is a private matter and we want to protect our children.'

Bearman handed 10-place grid drop for home race

SILVERSTONE, England, July 5 (Reuters) - Formula One stewards handed Haas rookie driver Oliver Bearman a 10-place grid drop for his first home British Grand Prix for failing to comply with red warning flags in Saturday's final practice. Bearman, 20, was also given four penalty points, taking his tally to eight for the 12-month period. Twelve points triggers an automatic race ban. It was the second 10-place drop Bearman has collected in 12 races this season, with the other coming in Monaco. The Briton caused the first of two red flag periods in Saturday's practice at Silverstone when his car shed some bodywork, with the second stoppage due to Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto crashing. Stewards heard from Bearman after the session and reported in a statement he had slowed for the second red flags but accelerated to race pace and entered the pit entry road at 260kph. Bearman then lost control of the car and hit the barriers. "It is beyond doubt that the driver of Car 87 did not proceed slowly back to the pit lane when he accelerated to simulate entering into the pit entry road under race conditions," the stewards said. "We looked at a previous in-lap under normal racing conditions and found that he was faster in this lap, under a red flag. To make matters worse, he lost control of the car and crashed into the barriers while at speed. "The driver informed us that he misjudged the fact that his brakes were not warm because the lap was done slowly, due to the red flag."
