The Wire19-06-2025
New Delhi, Delhi, India (NewsVoir) Key Findings: • Working women's Protection Quotient score remains at 48; working men's rises to 50 • Women feel less financially secure across life goals like retirement, education, and marriage • Higher concern among women about inflation, healthcare costs, and loss of a breadwinner Axis Max Life Insurance Ltd. ('Axis Max Life'/ 'Company'), formerly known as Max Life Insurance Company Ltd, in partnership with KANTAR, the world's leading marketing data and analytics company, has released gender-specific findings from the seventh edition of its India Protection Quotient (IPQ) study. Under the Company's 'Bharosa Talks' initiative, IPQ 7.0 highlights a widening gap in financial preparedness between working men and women in urban India.
According to the study, working men's Protection Quotient score rose to 50 (from 47 in IPQ 6.0), while working women's score remained stagnant at 48 indicating a break in last year's parity. Despite urban India's overall improvement in financial protection, working women continue to face unique anxieties across key life milestones such as retirement planning, children's education, and marriage. Additionally, women expressed higher levels of concern around inflation, medical emergencies, and loss of a breadwinner, further amplifying the need for gender-responsive financial planning and support frameworks.
Prashant Tripathy, CEO & Managing Director, Axis Max Life, said, 'As India progresses on its journey toward financial security, it is vital that we recognise the varied realities shaping people's protection needs. The IPQ 7.0 findings reveal that working women continue to face structural and emotional barriers to financial preparedness. This calls for not only greater awareness, but also collective effort across the industry to make protection more inclusive, accessible, and aligned to the evolving fabric of Indian society.' Implications & Path Forward The study underscores the need to embed gender-sensitivity across insurance design, advisory models, and education programs. From savings-led planning tools to customised advisory support, the industry must act with urgency to ensure India's women feel secure, seen, and protected.

'Double standards': India rejects Nato chief's Russian oil remarks, says 'energy needs an overriding priority'

Earlier this week, Rutte referred to secondary tariffs that US lawmakers have been pushing for countries buying Russian oil and gas and urged countries like India to either convince Russia to stop attacks on Ukraine or be ready to be hit "very hard". Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Thursday said that India will continue to secure energy requirement of its irrespective of whatever anyone might say. He further flagged the double standards of the West in their narrative of the Indian purchase of Russian oil. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Let me reiterate that securing energy needs of our people is understandably an overriding priority for us. In this endeavor, we ae guided by what is on offer in the markets, and by the prevailing global circumstances. We would particularly caution against any double standards on the matter,' said Jaiswal. For context, European nations that largely make up the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) have paid more money to Russia for energy imports than they have given to Ukraine in aid since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022. #WATCH | Delhi | On Nato chief Mark Rutte's comment that countries buying Russian oil could face secondary sanctions, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal says, "We have seen reports on the subject and are closely following the developments. Let me reiterate that securing the energy… — ANI (@ANI) July 17, 2025 Earlier this week, Rutte singled out India and said the failure to stop buying Russian oil could hit it 'in a massive way'. 'My encouragement to these three countries, particularly is, if you live now in Beijing, or in Delhi, or you are the president of Brazil, you might want to take a look into this, because this might hit you very hard. So please make the phone call to Vladimir Putin and tell him that he has to get serious about peace talks, because otherwise this will slam back on Brazil, on India and on China in a massive way,' said Rutte. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, India has ramped up the purchase of discounted Russian oil. Officials and commentators in the West have often criticised the Indian purchase of oil as they have accused India and other buyers like China of funding the Russian war. Energy exports, such as oil and gas, make up a huge chunk of Russian revenues that it uses to fund the war on Ukraine. However, these officials and commentators, such as Rutte, ignore the fact that European nations have also continued to buy Russian oil and gas. In fact, European nations have paid Russia more for such imports than they have given to Ukraine in aid. Consider this: Since 2022, the European Union (EU) has been the largest buyer of Russian liquified natural gas (51 per cent) and pipeline gas (37 per cent) and Turkey —a Nato member— has been the largest buyer of Russian oil products (26 per cent), according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD So far this year, EU members have bought €21.9 billion ($25.4 billion) of Russian oil and gas compared to €18.7 billion ($21.69 billion) that they have allocated in aid for Ukraine, according to estimates from the CREA. Moreover, since 2022, estimates have said that the EU members have paid $215–235 billion to Russia for oil, gas, and coal, compared to $200 billion that they have allocated and pledged to Ukraine in aid.

Rupee drops to three-week low as dollar strengthens, FPIs limit fall

The rupee depreciated past the psychologically crucial 86-per-dollar mark on Thursday, tracking the strengthening US dollar, to settle at a three-week low of 86.08 per dollar, said dealers. The local currency had settled at 85.94 on Wednesday. Market participants said foreign inflows and dollar sales by exporters capped losses. 'In line with its Asian counterparts, the Indian rupee weakened against the US dollar. The dollar's rally was fuelled by President Trump's statement that he does not intend to fire Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. Even with significant dollar inflows into the primary market, the rupee followed the regional trend, closing at 86.08,' said Dilip Parmar, Senior Research Analyst at HDFC Securities. The dollar index gained 0.4 per cent to reach 98.7, reversing earlier losses after President Donald Trump addressed speculation about the future of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. The greenback had initially weakened amid concerns that Trump might attempt to remove Powell, but rebounded once the President downplayed the likelihood of such a move, calling it 'highly unlikely'. The dollar index measures the strength of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies. 'The Indian rupee was in a range of 85.79 to 86.1025 as there were inflows from the QIP of Reliance Power, while outflows from certain IPOs (Anthem Bio Sciences was subscribed 63 times, so a good-sized outflow has happened) kept it in a range. FPIs and oil companies continued to remain dollar buyers amid uncertainties in the world markets and trade deal negotiations also not getting finalised,' said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. 'FPIs bought strongly between 85.97 and 86.1025, with the market caught short. The strong dollar index kept the rupee weak, while the fall in Asian currencies also did not help as the rupee continued to depreciate towards 86 levels,' he added.
