Ukrainian drone attacks force Russia to cancel naval parade during Putin visit

MOSCOW — Ukrainian drones targeted St. Petersburg on Sunday, Russian authorities said, forcing the airport to close for five hours as Vladimir Putin marked Russia's Navy Day in the city, despite the earlier cancellation of its naval parade due to security concerns. St. Petersburg usually holds a large-scale, televised navy parade on Navy Day, which features a flotilla of warships and military vessels sailing down the Neva River and is attended by Putin. Last year, Russia suspected a Ukrainian plan to attack the city's parade, according to state television. 5 Russian President Vladimir Putin shaking with Russian Navy officers during a visit to St. Petersburg for Navy Day on July 27, 2025. Alexei Danichev, Sputnik, Kremlin Pool Photo via AP Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Sunday that this year's parade had been cancelled for security reasons, following first reports of its cancellation in early July. Putin arrived at the city's historic naval headquarters on Sunday by patrol speed boat, from where he followed drills involving more than 150 vessels and 15,000 military personnel in the Pacific and Arctic Oceans and Baltic and Caspian Seas. 'Today we are marking this holiday in a working setting, we are inspecting the combat readiness of the fleet,' Putin said in a video address. 5 People gathered at the frigate 'Admiral Grigorovich' in Kronstadt outside of St. Petersburg for Putin's visit. AP Photo/Dmitri Lovetsky The Russian Defence Ministry said air defense units downed a total of 291 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones on Sunday, below a record 524 drones downed in attacks on May 7, ahead of Russia's Victory Day parade on May 9. Alexander Drozdenko, governor of the Leningrad region surrounding St. Petersburg, said that over ten drones were downed over the area, and falling debris injured a woman. At 8:40 GMT on Sunday Drozdenko said that the attack was repelled. St. Petersburg's Pulkovo airport was closed during the attack, with 57 flights delayed and 22 diverted to other airports, according to a statement. Pulkovo resumed operations later on Sunday. Russian blogger Alexander Yunashev, part of an official group of reporters traveling with Peskov, said Peskov had told him their flight from Moscow to St. Petersburg had been delayed by the drone attack for 2 hours on Sunday.

At least 3 killed and others injured in train derailment in southern Germany

BERLIN — A regional passenger train derailed in southern Germany on Sunday, killing at least three people and seriously injuring others, authorities said. Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near Riedlingen, roughly 158 kilometers (98 miles) west of Munich, remains under investigation. Photos from the scene showed parts of the train on its side as rescuers climbed atop the carriages. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured. Roughly 100 people were onboard the train when at least two carriages derailed in a forested area around 6:10 p.m. (1610 GMT). Storms passed through the area before the crash and investigators were seeking to determine if the rain was a factor. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in a post on social platform X, said he mourned the victims and gave his condolences to their families. Deutsche Bahn, Germany's main national railway operator, said in a statement that it was cooperating with investigators. The company also offered its condolences.

3 Spectators, Including 2 Brothers, Killed After Race Car Veers Off Course

Two brothers, ages 60 and 70, and a 44-year-old father died after they were struck by a car racing in the Rallye de la Fourme d'Ambert Three people in France have died after they were struck by a race car, authorities say. According to the French news outlet La Montagne, two brothers, ages 60 and 70, and a 44-year-old father died on the morning of Saturday, July 26, in Ambert, in the Puy-de-Dôme region located in central France. The outlet reported that the driver, a 22-year-old woman and her co-driver, a 51-year-old man, were taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The pair were driving a modified Peugeot 208, a European subcompact car, as a part of the Rallye de la Fourme d'Ambert. The outlet reported that around 30 firefighters and several police officers were called to the scene. The 44-year-old man who died was transported to a local hospital, where he was then pronounced dead. La Montagne reported that the three spectators were seemingly positioned near red tape in a prohibited area, but investigators, including the local prosecutor, said they haven't determined exactly where the victims were standing. A colonel who spoke with the outlet said that the accident took place during a segment of the race that was "almost in a straight line, not on a tight bend." The local prosecutor's office has also opened an investigation, and the driver and co-driver will take toxicology tests, per the outlet. Race officials canceled the rally soon afterwards. "Following the serious accident in the special N1, the organization and the race management decide to permanently stop the rally at 10:49," the race's management team stated on Facebook. "Flat rate times apply to competitors who are parked closed and haven't made the specials. There will be no awards." In a post shared to X, the Puy-de-Dôme prefecture account wrote that several local and national police organizations would be taking part in the investigation. "This morning, a tragic accident occurred during the Rallye de la Fourme d'Ambert. Following a vehicle in the race going off the road, several spectators were struck," the post stated. "The prefect of Puy-de-Dôme is on the scene to monitor the situation alongside the emergency services and mobilized authorities." "Our thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and all those affected by this tragedy," the account added. According to France Bleu, a race steward helping to manage the same race was killed last year on July 27. The 42-year-old man was attending to a car that had rolled off the road when he was struck by a second car. François Chautard, the mayor of Saint-Just — the community where the race took place — told La Montagne that he's had "a great deal of emotion and sadness" following the incident. "My thoughts are especially with the families," Chautard added. "The rally has been running for 30 years, and the last two years have seen one disaster after another."
