This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Heather Torres, the owner of Porch Pumpkins, a Texas-based seasonal decor delivery company. It has been edited for length and clarity.
Shortly after my youngest son was born, I went crazy with pumpkins.
I'd always admired the beautiful seasonal decorations that the Dallas Arboretum displays each year, and when he was little, I decided to start trying my hand at creating pumpkinscapes at home as a way to keep him — and myself — busy.
It wasn't long before I got good at it. Really good at it. I won a local award for Best Yard in 2013 and just kept trying to one-up myself. Eventually, my friends started asking me to create displays at their houses, and I got the idea that maybe people would pay for professional pumpkin displays during the fall season, the way they do for Christmas lights.
The idea stayed in the back of my head for a few years while I was busy as a stay-at-home mom raising my children. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and everyone was stuck inside, it felt like the right time to try to make it a small business to earn a little money and use my talents. I decided I could bring the pumpkin patch to you!
I previously worked in the restaurant industry and knew I didn't want to make one-off custom designs. I wanted things to be super simple, so I created four different packages at different price points for customers to choose from.
The most popular package is the smallest display, which costs $325 and includes about 30 pumpkins of varying sizes. Our biggest package is for the true pumpkin lover, and it includes two 50-pound pumpkins, bales of hay, and all kinds of decorative extras for $1,350. We offer delivery and removal services. You can set up your own display, or we can do it for you.
We just celebrated our fifth birthday, and I never could have imagined how things would take off.
It used to be just me and my husband doing deliveries. Then I started hiring other moms I knew to work as part-time display designers and delivery drivers. I hired three people in my first year, and we completed just over 250 displays.
Now, we have over 20 people on our team, and we completely sold out in 2024. My goal was to decorate 1,000 porches, and we ended up doing 1,052.
It has worked out so that, now, I'm busy from August to December, but then I'm pretty much done in the spring and can be fully present to volunteer at my kids' school and do all the things a mom does, like try to cook dinner each night.
This year, it became increasingly evident that people were gravitating toward this business and were really interested in my approach. I get emails all the time asking to pick my brain, so in March, I started coaching other entrepreneurs about how to start their own seasonal pumpkin businesses.
I charge $4,500 for two hourlong sessions teaching you all the lessons I've learned along the way — from sourcing pumpkins to creating the decorative displays — and in just the few months since I launched that service, I've helped 12 people, mostly women, launch their own pumpkin businesses across the US.
We had the foresight to trademark our name and logo, so all the other pumpkin businesses popping up have different names. But we're also beginning to franchise, so soon, there will be official Porch Pumpkins locations across the country.
The whole process has really been a gift for my family. I'm just so excited to see how much we can grow from here.

ALGN stock has declined 17.8% over the past 52 weeks, underperforming the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund's (XLV) 6.3% decline and the S&P 500 Index's ($SPX) 13% uptick during the same time frame. Align Technology's stock prices rose 2% in the trading session after the release of its mixed Q1 earnings on Apr. 30. The company's net revenues declined 1.8% year-over-year to $979.3 million, but surpassed the Wall Street estimates. The one thing that's driving home sellers bananas right now — and making buyers happy

A rising tide doesn't quite lift all boats when it comes to the real-estate market. Alongside falling mortgage rates, the number of homes for sale in the U.S. has increased significantly over the last year, giving buyers way more options and a reprieve from an overheated housing market. 'I'm single': At 70, I have $500,000 in stocks and $220,000 in savings. How do I invest my $130,000 windfall? 'I do all the yard work, cooking and cleaning': I live with my daughter and her lazy boyfriend. She wants me to buy her house. Do I say yes? My wife and I have $7,000 a month in pensions and Social Security, plus $140,000 cash. Can we afford to retire? My wife and I are in our late 60s. Do I sell stocks to pay our $30,000 credit-card debt — or do it gradually over 3 years? 'Finance makes me break out in hives': I inherited $240K from my parents. Do I pay off my $258K mortgage and give up my job? But sellers are growing increasingly frustrated. Homes are taking longer to sell than a few years ago, and sellers are compelled to cut prices in the hopes of getting an offer on their home. About one in five sellers cut their asking price in May, the highest share in at least nine years, said. That's when the site first began tracking the data. The stats showcase the housing market's U-turn over the last few months. As the pandemic-era homebuying frenzy faded away, the market has largely been frozen over the last few years as homeowners clung to their ultralow mortgage rates and decided not to sell. But even that phenomenon, known as the lock-in effect, has begun to ease. Housing supply has surged in many parts of the U.S. In pandemic boomtowns like Denver and Austin, housing supply has exceeded prepandemic levels, meaning there are more homes for sale today than there were on average between 2017 and 2019. Related: The housing market is finally buyer-friendly as more sellers slash prices. Here's where you can find a deal. In Denver, housing inventory has doubled from before the pandemic. The company's chief economist, Danielle Hale, said the rebound in inventory provided a 'clear sign of a housing market realignment.' For buyers, the flip has been a boon. Sentiment among buyers has improved considerably, with 26% of respondents to a May survey by Fannie Mae saying it was a good time to buy a house — the highest share in three years. House hunters can afford to take their time and negotiate better deals these days. 'It is just a much slower pace,' Christine Dupont-Patz, a Denver-based real-estate broker associate and a co-owner with Re/Max of Cherry Creek, told MarketWatch. 'You have the luxury of being able to look at a house two, three times, that you did not have a couple of years ago,' when people had to view a house and decide immediately, she added. Out of the 50 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S., 22 have seen inventory levels exceed 2017–2019 norms, said. All these metro areas are either in the South or the West. A key reason those two regions have seen inventory levels rise has been builders adding new homes to the market. Sellers are seeing a return to that era. In May, a home for sale typically spent about 51 days on the market, six days longer than in the same month a year ago. Though sellers may feel like homes are languishing on the market, the number of days on the market is still about the same duration it took to sell before the pandemic, noted. Aside from having more listings to choose from, buyers are also seeing a slight improvement in mortgage rates. In early July, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rate dropped to 6.67%, the lowest level in over two months. The 30-year rate dropped 10 basis points from a week ago, when it was 6.77%, Freddie Mac said in its weekly report. But even the housing-finance giant noted that growing inventory is the bigger win for buyers. 'Declining mortgage rates are encouraging and, while overall affordability challenges remain, we are seeing more sellers enter the market, giving prospective buyers an advantage,' Sam Khater, Freddie Mac's chief economist, said in a statement. Sellers frustrated by low interest in their homes don't necessarily have to slash asking prices to get attention, though. One tactic that Dupont-Patz recommends to some buyers is to get a mortgage-rate buydown, a common strategy used by home builders, in which the seller pays the lender a certain amount of money upfront in exchange for a lower mortgage rate. Related: More builders slash prices as home buyers stay away from the housing market For instance, if a home is listed for $1.5 million, a seller can offer a concession of $30,000, which the buyer can tell the lender to put toward lowering their mortgage rate. This has the potential to substantially lower monthly mortgage payments. 'That can significantly save you money,' Dupont-Patz said. S&P 500 just saw its first 'golden cross' in more than 2 years.
