Oval downpour leaves England-India series on knife edge
England were 339-6 when play was abandoned at 1703 GMT, with the hosts needing a further 35 runs to reach a target of 374 on Monday's final day.
India, meanwhile, require four wickets to end this thrilling five-match series level at 2-2.
England were faltering at 106-3 following the loss of stand-in captain Ollie Pope.
But the Yorkshire duo of Brook (111) and Root (105) turned the tide with a fourth-wicket stand of 195 that left England cruising to a 3-1 series win with more than a day to spare.
But Brook's exit sparked a mini-collapse that saw England lose three wickets for 36 runs, with Root also unable to finish the job.
And when bad light halted play at 1630 GMT, England were wobbling, with Jamie Smith (two not out) and Jamie Overton (nought not out) struggling for runs.
A huge downpour then effectively prevented any hope of a resumption Sunday.
"It is quite fitting for how the rest of the series has gone," Root told the BBC.
"We are in for a cracker for tomorrow. It is a weird one going into the fifth day with the sun out now but it will be a great finish."
The most any side have made in the fourth innings to win a Test at the Oval is England's 263 in a one-wicket victory over Australia back in 1902.
Aggressive batting has been a cornerstone of England's approach to Test cricket since captain Ben Stokes, ruled out of this match with a shoulder injury, and coach Brendon McCullum joined forces in 2022.
England started this series with the 10th highest successful run chase in Test history after they knocked off a target of 371 for a five-wicket win over India in the opener at Headingley in June.
Brook made an immediate impact when he came out to bat on Sunday, at one stage hitting 27 runs in the space of eight balls.
The talented 26-year-old charged down the pitch to loft Akash Deep for an extraordinary six over cover despite heavy cloud cover in London favouring India's quicks.

He almost holed out to fine leg off Prasidh Krishna but Mohammed Siraj was unable to stop himself stepping onto the boundary rope, which meant a six for Brook.
India captain Shubman Gill let the game drift and it was not until the 43rd over, with England 190-3, that he introduced spin -- in the shape of Washington Sundar.
But neither off-spinner Sundar or left-armer Ravindra Jadeja made much impact against two well-set batsmen, who took just 108 balls to complete a century partnership.
Brook went to 98 when Deep misfielded a drive on the rope to concede a boundary.
Next ball a two to third man took Brook to a 91-ball century, including 12 fours and two sixes, his second of the series.
Brook's innings ended in appropriately spectacular fashion when, going for another big hit off Deep, his bat flew out of his hands. As the blade soared towards square leg, the ball looped to mid-off where Siraj held the catch.
Root's typically elegant straight-driven four off Siraj took him to 98 not out at tea, with the former England captain completing his 39th Test century following the interval, reaching the landmark in 137 balls, including 12 fours.
The recalled Jacob Bethell lost his wicket when he charged down the pitch to Krishna only to be clean bowled for five as his middle stump went flying.
Root then fell soon afterwards, when caught behind flicking at a Krishna delivery to leave England 337-6.
England resumed Sunday on 50-1 after Siraj yorked Zak Crawley with the last ball of Saturday's play.
Ben Duckett, 34 not out overnight, fell for 54 after edging an intended drive off Krishna to KL Rahul at second slip before Pope was plumb lbw for 27 to Siraj.

"If the kid after 18 months isn't at a level, they're thinking, 'We've only spent five grand', and they're going to release him very quickly. "Whereas if they have invested in the player by means of the transfer fee and invested in him and his family then they are going to work closer with them. "So yeah it's a big decision and young players have to choose wisely to make sure it's the best move for them and their career. "What we can't do, and what we never have done or would never do as a football club is if a big club or somebody wants a 16-year-old, we won't stand in their way. "But I think personally, again, there's no harm in going the Gareth McAuley route. He ended up playing until he was 37, 38. It took him a little bit longer to break into eventually. "Gareth had an outstanding career. He scored one of the most iconic goals that Northern Ireland have ever seen on the European stage. So if anybody knows about playing in the Irish League and being patient and having a few knock backs it's Gareth. "Some of the younger players here they want to go to a Premier League club. Then all of a sudden, maybe it doesn't work out and they're maybe scarred a little bit. Their confidence maybe takes a couple of knocks. And then they have to go and find somewhere else. "So as Gareth says about Matty Orr playing 40 or 50 games here, just like Trai, and there was also the likes of Paul Smith, Gavin White, Stuartie Dallas and Big G himself, who treaded a similar path, if you've played so many games at a young age then you're ready to go and I think they're better prepared for it."

Ben Doak shines as 3 players impress Arne Slot in game No. 1 vs. Athletic Bilbao
Liverpool beat Athletic Bilbao 4-1 in the first of two back-to-back friendlies on Monday at Anfield. It was a slick attacking performance from the Reds who, despite a few defensive hiccups, were in control for long spells. Two goals, scored via Rio Ngumoha and Darwin Nunez, within five minutes got the game off to a perfect start, after the pre-match tributes to Diogo Jota. Ben Doak grabbed a third before the break to underline the Reds' dominance, although that dropped a little after the half-time break. Harvey Elliott did get his name on the scoresheet too, before Gorka Guruzeta scored a consolation for the visitors following several changes from Arne Slot. Here's who stood out for Liverpool in game no.1 of the double header. He was a constant menace down Liverpool's right, linking well with Harvey Elliott. In fact, the pair combined for Nunez's opener, when Doak's cross was nodded down by Ngumoha, before Liverpool's no.9 flicked it past Alez Padilla in the away goal. Doak, who showed a good turn of pace throughout and produced several penetrative runs in behind, grabbed the third of the game when he drove down the line and fired at goal. Admittedly, it was a moment Padilla won't want to see back as he flapped unsuccessfully at the ball. Minutes before, the Liverpool teenager had forced the goalkeeper into a smart save at his near post; the Bilbao defence were pleased with a break at half-time. They were also sparred another battering after the break with Doak withdrawn after 55 minutes on an enjoyable return to Anfield. Rio Ngumoha The summer of 2025 could well be remembered as the breakthrough period of Ngumoha's Liverpool career. He may just be 16, but it's difficult to see a way in which Slot doesn't include him in his first-team plans this season. After wowing on tour, the ex-Chelsea youngster brought the same energy to Monday's fixture. He was energetic, showed breath-takingly quick feet, and also has an ability to provide decisive moments. He proved that within two minutes when he fired a curling shot into the net with his right foot after a dazzling Liverpool breakaway. His flick set up Nunez's goal soon after and he bamboozled right-back Andoni Gorosabel repeatedly in the first half. That waned slightly as the game continued, although a jink inside drew an excited collective intake of breath from the Anfield crowd at the start of the second period. Ngumoha was replaced after 67 minutes on his second Anfield senior appearance. One suspects the third isn't far away. Curtis Jones In a game that at times lacked intensity, Jones footwork stood out at Anfield. It's no surprise that the pace wasn't full pelt at this stage of the summer, and Liverpool enjoyed long spells of possession. Jones' ability to move the ball forward with speed and technical control were noticeable and on several occasions he even forced Alejandro Rego Mora into a cynical foul after he cut down Liverpool's no.17. Jones also played a role in the build up to Elliott's late goal and he dropped deeper after Alexis Mac Allister made way in the second half to help Liverpool retain possession. Any one else? This was an impressive team performance and a few others stood. Trey Nyoni made some important interceptions at center-back and look confident in possession. Kostas Tsimikas made few errors at left-back, while Nunez looked sharp and linked well with team-mates on potentially his last Liverpool performance at Anfield.
