World Rugby unable to identify perpetrators of racism at Argentina-England match

LONDON (AP) — World Rugby couldn't identify perpetrators of racism after receiving a complaint from England regarding abuse aimed at its players during a match in Argentina this month.
'While it is clear that an incident took place, we regret that the individuals responsible could not be identified,' World Rugby said Monday, adding that the Argentine federation 'has developed an action plan to enhance their operations, educate fans and better prevent such unacceptable incidents from occurring again.'
Jack van Poortvliet's last-gasp try earned England a 22-17 win over Argentina and another test series victory in Pumas country.
'We strongly condemn all acts of racism and stand in solidarity with the England Rugby players who felt aggrieved,' said Gabriel Travaglini, president of the Argentina Rugby Union.
'Upon learning of the incidents, intense efforts were made to identify the small group of five or seven individuals responsible within a crowd of over 20,000 spectators,' Travaglini added. 'Unfortunately, despite an exhaustive search, it was not possible to identify the perpetrators. We will continue to work collaboratively with World Rugby to educate the fans and eradicate any similar manifestations in the future, ensuring that our events are spaces of respect and inclusion for everyone.'

Video showing migrant worker moved by forklift prompts action from South Korea's president

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea's president ordered officials to find ways to prevent abuses of migrant workers after a video showing a Sri Lankan worker being moved by a forklift while tied up at a South Korean factory sparked public outrage. 'After watching the video, I couldn't believe my eyes,' President Lee Jae Myung wrote Thursday in a Facebook post. 'That was an intolerable violation and clear human rights abuses of a minority person.' In a Cabinet Council meeting later, Lee again condemned the abuse and raised concerns about South Korea's international image. He ordered government ministries to determine the status of human rights violations facing migrant workers and other minorities in South Korea and find realistic steps to prevent such abuses. South Korean human rights activists on Wednesday released the video filmed at a brick factory in the southwestern city of Naju in late February. They said it was filmed and provided by a fellow Sri Lankan worker. The video shows a forklift driver, who has been identified as a South Korean, lifting another worker who is bound with plastic wraps and tied to bricks. The driver moves him around the factory yard in the vehicle while the sound of laughter from another person can be heard. The 31-year-old victim, who came to South Korea in November, suffered the abuse for about five minutes as a punishment imposed by the South Korean forklift driver who wasn't happy with his brick wrapping skills, according to Mun Gil Ju, one of the local activists involved in the video's release. Naju city officials said the head of the factory told them he had been informed the event was organized as a prank. But Mun said 'bounding a person with plastic wraps' cannot be dismissed as a prank. The company has about 24 workers, including seven from East Timor and Sri Lanka along with South Koreans. The Sri Lankan victim still works for the factory, according to Naju officials. The Labor Ministry said in a statement Thursday it will launch an investigation of the factory and inspect whether foreign workers there have experienced beating, bullying and overdue wages. Hundreds of thousands of migrants, mostly from Southeast Asia and China, take low-paying or dangerous work at factories, farms and other sites where activists say many experience discrimination and abuses.

American Airlines flight attendant who admitted to secretly filming young girls in plane bathroom learns fate

A perverted American Airlines flight attendant who confessed to taping his phone to the airplane toilet's lid to film girls as young as seven years old has been sentenced to 18 1/2 years in prison. Estes Carter Thompson III pleaded guilty earlier this year to recording five underage girls over a nine-month period — as well as amassing a trove of AI-generated child pornography. The 37-year-old now-fired flight attendant apologized at his sentencing Wednesday, conceding that his depraved actions were 'selfish, perverse and wrong.' Advertisement 3 Perv Estes Carter Thompson admitted to secretly recording underage girls in airplane lavatories. Lynchburg Jail Boston U.S. District Court Judge Julia Kobick called Thompson's behavior 'appalling' and said the filmed kids' 'innocence has been lost' because of it. Federal prosecutors noted that Thompson had been 'recording videos of the children's bodies in one of their most private moments, and then storing, editing, and revisiting those videos, all for his own sexual gratification,' according to a sentencing memorandum obtained by Advertisement 3 One of Thompson's makeshift hidden camera setups, spotted by a 14-year-old victim. AP Thompson 'robbed five young girls of their innocence and belief in the goodness of the world and the people they would encounter in it, instead leaving them with fear, mistrust, insecurity, and sadness,' prosecutors said. The North Carolina native was arrested in September 2023 on a Boston-bound flight after he escorted a 14-year-old passenger to the lavatory — but asked to enter first to wash his hands, mentioning that the toilet seat was not working, prosecutors told the US District Court in Boston. 3 Two of the victims' families are suing American Airlines for allowing the recordings to happen on its watch. AP Advertisement The girl then found an iPhone crudely concealed under red maintenance stickers that said 'seat broken' on the underside of the toilet seat. The teen snapped photos of the hidden camera, returned to her seat, and showed them to her parents. The girls' father confronted Thompson, who hid himself in the bathroom for the remainder of the flight and deleted all of his phone's data. Investigators discovered more red stickers in his suitcase, and a search of his iCloud account revealed more recordings of four other underage girls — ages 7, 9, 11 and 14 — as well as photos of an unaccompanied 9-year-old asleep in her seat, and a hoard of sexual AI-generated images involving children. Advertisement He pleaded guilty in March to charges of attempted sexual exploitation of children and possession of child pornography depicting a prepubescent minor. Thompson will serve his sentence at FMC Butner in North Carolina and intends to undergo treatment for sex offenders. In addition to the 18-plus years behind bars, he must also serve five years of supervised release. Thompson was immediately fired by American Airlines after the incident, but the company is still facing a civil lawsuit from one of the victims. Paul Llewellyn, whose Texas-based law firm Lewis & Llewellyn is representing the child's family, told it's 'deeply troubling' Thompson was able to exploit his position 'in such a calculated and invasive way.' 'American Airlines owes these families — and the public — answers and meaningful reforms to ensure this can never happen again,' he said. With Post Wires

Retegui isn't simply Aubameyang's successor, he's a game-changer

It's safe to say Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is a difficult man to replace. Few can match the Gabonese international for his showmanship, but that is secondary to his ability in front of goal; there's no point being a 'showman', as the 36-year-old describes himself, if you're not delivering where it matters most: on the pitch. And in what proved his only season at Al Qadsiah, after arriving last summer from French giants Olympique Marseille, the former Arsenal and Barcelona star did just that. Fronting the ambitious club's attack upon their return to the Roshn Saudi League, Aubameyang scored 17 goals and recorded three assists as Al Qadsiah finished an impressive fourth. Yet, when player and club agreed to part ways last week, manager Michel and his employers had their work cut out finding a replacement who could deliver as Aubameyang did. However, not only did they do just that, you could even say they've upgraded. The man to replace Aubameyang? Well, how about Mateo Retegui, the reigning golden boot from Italy's Serie A. The Argentine-born Italian international put pen to paper this week on a four-year deal in what is a massive coup for both the club and RSL. Retegui reportedly had a line of suitors, including Italian giants Juventus. Ten years younger than Aubameyang, the forward arrives at the east-coast club at the peak of his powers after a breakout season with Atalanta. Having joined the fast-rising Serie A side from Genoa the previous summer, he netted 25 goals and chipped in with eight assists to fire the Bergamo outfit to a third-placed finish. It's been a meteoric rise for the San Fernando-born striker, who began his career with Boca Juniors. But it was on loan at Buenos Aires side Tigre that he first started to flourish, scoring 30 goals in 48 games. It was there that he was granted an, perhaps unexpected, opportunity of a lifetime: to play for the Italian national team. At the time, Italy were desperate for a free-scoring frontman under Roberto Mancini, a man who is no stranger to Saudi Arabian football. With Retegui's maternal grandfather hailing from Italy, as well as his great-grandparents on his father's side, Mancini presented the chance to represent the Azzurri. It's one Retegui grasped with both hands, grabbing a goal on debut against England in March 2023. His rapid ascension to the national team quickly captured the attention of clubs in Serie A, with Genoa snaring his signature. Retegui's first season in Italy was solid, if unspectacular, with seven league goals. Still, it was enough the pique the interest of Atalanta, who had finished fourth that season and qualified for the UEFA Champions League. It was in Bergamo, in the north of Italy, under Gian Piero Gasperini that Retegui's talent really flourished. A brace on the opening day of the 2024-25 season was a perfect way to win over his new fans and gave a glimpse of what was to come. At the 10-match mark, he had 10 goals. From there, he struck another 15 times to conclude the campaign as Serie A's leading scorer. In fact, he was six clear of his closest challenger in the race for the Paolo Rossi Award, Fiorentina's Moise Kean. 'Retegui has had an extraordinary season,' Gasperini said. 'He has scored with his right foot, his left, his head – thanks also to the contribution of the team. His goals have been decisive for our campaign.' After helping Atalanta secure their equal-best league finish, more prominent clubs began circling Retegui, with Juventus apparently keen on bringing him to Turin. Yet it was Al Qadsiah's pitch that ultimately sealed his signature. 'I'm very happy; this is something I truly wanted,' Retegui said of his move to Al Qadsiah. 'I'm eager to know the team, the coach and everyone working here. It's a big step for me and I'm ready to give my best.' The expectations of him are simple: score goals and help the upwardly mobile Al Khobar club win. After an impressive first season back in the RSL, breaking into the top four and making the final of the King's Cup, the side from Al Khobar are clearly building for better. Retegui, aged 26 and therefore set to spend his peak years in the Kingdom, has patently been signed with that mission in mind. 'I spoke with the coach about the quality of the players here,' explained the Italian, whose potential partnership with Mexican marksman Julian Quinones is mouthwatering, indeed. 'The expectations are high, and the team has a great mentality. 'I hope to be one of the reasons the fans are happy this season. I hope to score many goals and bring joy to everyone around. 'I'm ready for this moment, full of energy and determination to help the team. I'll give everything I have, and with teamwork, I believe we can achieve great things.' Arriving in rude health and fresh off winning the golden boot in one of Europe's top-five leagues, Retegui is more than just a replacement for Aubameyang. He is a game-changer for his increasingly enterprising new employers.
