The WBO and WBC Latino heavyweight champion was part of MMA promotions in the likes of World Series of Fighting, Eagle Fighting Championship and Karate Combat. Spong showed his respect for the UFC boss Dana White, 'But at that time, I was the man in town. I had so many options, which is a blessing and a curse at the same time because it makes you indecisive. I was fighting MMA, boxing, kickboxing, all together. Despite the fact the fighter had to move on with other aspects in his career, he is still hopeful of a better offer from the UFC, if they ever come up with one.

Ben Askren Shares Recovery Update After Double Lung Transplant: 'That's Progress...'

Former UFC and Bellator welterweight champion Ben 'Funky" Askren has always faced his toughest tests inside the octagon. Yet nothing could prepare him for the brutal endurance trial he's living now. After nearly two months in the ICU battling pneumonia that escalated into acute respiratory distress syndrome, Askren underwent a double lung transplant – an operation that saved his life but left him confronting a new, grueling opponent: recovery. In his latest Instagram update, Askren filmed himself pushing his walker down a sterile hospital corridor, visibly fatigued yet determined. 'I did a full lap earlier. I'm not sure if I'm going to do a full lap again. I'm gassed. I can't [do] more than one lap of walking. It gets me so tired," he confessed, voice strained but candid. Yet even amid exhaustion, a spark of optimism endured. 'That's progress. Hope you guys do the same with your life," he said. Askren's path to this moment was harrowing. After contracting pneumonia in late May, he spent 59 days in critical care before his failing lungs necessitated a transplant. Although his insurance fell short, a public fund and a $500,000 donation from Jake Paul ensured the surgery moved forward. Still, as boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya pointedly criticised the UFC's fighter pay, he declared, 'They don't give a f*** about fighters," underscoring the wider struggle athletes face when health crises strike. Now, Askren's days revolve around physical therapy and breathing exercises. Tasks that most take for granted – standing unassisted, pacing a short hallway – have become monumental victories. In one update, he reflected on the humility of his ordeal: 'Before this, I was pretty much totally self-sufficient," he admitted. 'I didn't ask for help." Recognising how pride once held him back, Askren now embraces his limitations as stepping stones. 'If you acknowledge what your problem is, you can solve it," he asserted. 'If you're unwilling to acknowledge it, you can't." Social media has flooded with messages of support from fighters, journalists, and fans alike. Askren's wife documents each milestone, from rising oxygen levels to extended laps. Though a triumphant return to competitive fighting remains uncertain, his resolve is unmistakable: to rebuild strength, reclaim independence, and savor every earned stride. Each labored step down that hospital hall symbolises more than physical therapy – it's a testament to the warrior spirit. Askren may have lost countless breaths to pneumonia, but he refuses to lose hope. As he continues this uphill march, one truth rings clear: true toughness isn't measured by takedowns or knockouts, but by the courage to keep moving forward when every step feels impossible. Trump to sign order creating task force for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

Trump has been an enthusiastic booster for major international sporting events scheduled to occur in the US under his watch, boasting about both the Olympics and the 2026 FIFA World Cup Bloomberg President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order on Tuesday establishing a task force for the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, which will be held in Los Angeles during his term. 'During his first term, President Trump was instrumental in securing America's bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles,' said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, adding that the president would work to make the event 'the most exciting and memorable in history.' 'The President considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term,' according to her statement Monday. The executive order creating the task force was first reported by Reuters. Trump has been an enthusiastic booster for major international sporting events scheduled to occur in the US under his watch, boasting about both the Olympics and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 'I got the World Cup and I have the Olympics and I did it,' Trump said at an event in Iowa in July. Trump tapped a similar task force earlier this year for the World Cup that will be hosted in the US, Canada and Mexico next year, appointing Andrew Giuliani, the son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani — one of the president's staunchest allies — to be its director. That task force was established to coordinate departments and agencies across the federal government to assist in organizing and carrying out the World Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, a separate tournament that was held earlier this year. Both the Olympics and the World Cup are expected to draw large numbers of spectators — as well as many international tourists — bringing logistical and security challenges. Some Trump administration critics have expressed concerns that his effort to crack down on undocumented immigration and restrict travel from some countries could complicate efforts to host those sporting events. Trump has promised he will facilitate travel and visa access for World Cup teams and supporters. The president has regularly attended premier sporting events since his return to office, including the Super Bowl, Daytona 500, a UFC fight, the NCAA men's wrestling championships and the FIFA Club World Cup final, which took place in New Jersey. And he often weighs in sports-world controversies. Trump blasted the Opening Ceremony for the 2024 Olympics in Paris as 'a disgrace' over a performance that some viewers believed to be a depiction of Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Last Supper,' even though organizers denied there was a religious reference.

Dricus du Plessis could move to light heavyweight or heavyweight, says Brendan Schaub

Dricus du Plessis could move up in weight after UFC 319 title fight UFC middleweight Champion Dricus du Plessis is currently preparing for his upcoming title defense against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 319 on August 16. While du Plessis remains focused on his middleweight title reign, future plans may involve a shift to higher weight classes, according to former UFC heavyweight and MMA commentator Brendan Schaub. Du Plessis, who has successfully defended his middleweight title twice, will look to hand Chimaev his first professional loss in the octagon. Chimaev enters the bout as a slight betting favorite across major sportsbooks. Despite the odds, du Plessis has previously defeated high-caliber opponents, including Israel Adesanya and Robert fought first in EFC (Extreme Fighting Championship) in Africa and was also a national wrestler for South Africa. The South African's famous duel, with Israel Adesanya and Sean Strickland where he got popular for his famous trash talk skills along with his fighting skills. Dricus had to defend his middleweight belt twice both against Dricus goes up against Chimaev for the middleweight title. The odds are against Dricus, as fan favourites believe the reason for this is because there is no odds against Chimaev after his beatdown on longest reigning middleweight title holder Robert Whittaker, in the first round, submitting and breaking his jaw. Chimaev stands undefeated, so is Dricus except, only in the UFC and two losses in his total professional MMA career. Alex Pereira wanted to fight Dricus, but, Dricus said that he would make the fight after his Chimaev fight, by moving to light read: Ronda Rousey comeback talk heats up ahead of possible White House UFC CardAppearing on the 'JAXXON Podcast,' Schaub discussed the broader implications of the UFC 319 main event. He suggested that the winner of du Plessis vs. Chimaev could eventually pursue titles across multiple divisions.'I think for Islam it made sense,' Schaub said. 'For Topuria, I still [think] he had some work to do, but for Makhachev it made sense to jump up to '70. He can definitely capture '55, '70. '85's a different animal because you have guys like DDP and Khamzat.'I think whoever wins out of Khamzat and DDP, whoever wins that can go for three belts. DDP's bigger than Khamzat, so light heavyweight, he's probably a light heavyweight naturally. So it makes sense for DDP to go to light heavyweight. Heavyweight's not as far a stretch for him. DDP's a big boy.'Speculation grows around Du Plessis' future in light heavyweight and heavyweight divisionsWhile du Plessis has more potential contenders to face at middleweight if successful at UFC 319, Schaub's comments suggest the 185-pound champion may not remain in his current division indefinitely. Du Plessis' size and build, according to Schaub, make him a natural candidate for light heavyweight, with heavyweight also a viable long-term idea of multi-division champions has gained traction in recent years, with several UFC fighters attempting to capture titles in multiple weight classes. Should du Plessis continue his momentum, a transition to light heavyweight or even heavyweight could position him for historic achievements within the promotion. For now, however, the primary focus remains on UFC 319. Fans and analysts alike await the middleweight clash between du Plessis and Chimaev, which could determine more than just the current status of the 185-pound division.
