Health Ministry, MCMC to use drones and telehealth to boost rural healthcare access
KOTA KINABALU: A strategic collaboration between the Health Ministry (MOH) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will see digital healthcare services extended to rural and interior areas of Sabah, including the delivery of medicine using drones.
In a joint statement on Wednesday (July 23), MOH and MCMC said the pilot drone project will be based at the Tawau Health Clinic and will serve two nearby National Information Dissemination Centres (Nadi).
Sabah was selected for the pilot due to its high 4G and 5G coverage — 94.4% and 69% respectively — as well as its geographical challenges that demand innovative solutions to ensure continued treatment and medicine access.
The collaboration will encompass eight major initiatives: upgrading communications infrastructure to support future healthcare needs; equipping rural clinics, including rural and community clinics, with computers and electronic medical record (EMR) systems; installing telehealth kiosks at Nadi centres; delivering medicine using drones to remote areas; implementing cybersecurity measures at health facilities; providing adaptation grants for EMR systems; establishing a Smart Hospital Innovation Hub; and strengthening Malaysia's participation in global digital health platforms.

The initiative will also enable cloud-based systems and virtual consultation platforms to support treatment continuity, follow-up care, and medicine delivery to hard-to-reach areas.
A key focus is also placed on enhancing digital health literacy among rural communities to boost public confidence in the safety and effectiveness of these services.
'MOH welcomes this partnership as it strengthens the public healthcare system through innovative, people-friendly solutions. It is a crucial approach to tackle today's healthcare challenges, especially in hard-to-access areas,' said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad in the statement.
With 1,099 Nadi centres nationwide acting as digital gateways, the public — including those in rural areas — will be able to access virtual consultations and telehealth services, furthering the national goal of '1 Individual, 1 Record' and reinforcing the digital health ecosystem.
The ministry said this move also supports Malaysia's aspiration to become a regional leader in digital health and a global hub for health innovation in line with the Madani government's vision.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- The Pasir Gudang Hospital (HPG) in Johor will begin operations after it reaches at least 50 per cent readiness, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. He said the Ministry of Health (MOH) is carrying out meticulous preparations with the Johor government to ensure basic amenities, medical equipment and human resources are sufficient before the hospital begins operations. "The Johor Menteri Besar and I agreed to ensure that we achieve at least around 50 per cent readiness, not just in terms of the physical building, but also equipment and human resources, before fully operating,' he told a media conference after launching the Malaysian Year of Medical Tourism (MYMT) 2026 here today. Dzulkefly also said that the hospital staff intake process is expected to be completed by the end of this year or the first quarter of 2026, at the latest. "The state government will try to give whatever assistance it can to the MOH to ensure all human resources supply can be met by at least 50 per cent for us to begin operations,' he said. Previously, the HPG - a 20.6-hectare facility located in Bandar Seri Alam that is equipped with 304 beds and offering 14 specialist services - was reported to be ready to start operating in phases from Aug 1. Meanwhile, Dzulkefly expressed his gratitude following the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday that the government will expedite the filling of over 4,000 positions at public health facilities, including contract appointments for doctors. "We are extremely grateful because we have received 4,253 positions, and just recently received the official letter from the Public Services Commission (SPA) regarding the matter. "We will immediately work on filling the positions, especially to push for the transition of the status of doctors and health workers from contract for service to contract of service and eventually to permanent positions,' he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism (MYMT) 2026 was officially launched today to reinforce the country's status as a leading destination for affordable, high-quality healthcare. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad unveiled the campaign under the tagline 'Healing Meets Hospitality,' targeting international healthcare travellers with Malaysia's blend of medical excellence and warm hospitality. 'Malaysia has long been recognised as a preferred destination for medical tourism. In 2024, we recorded 1.6 million healthcare travellers, generating RM2.72 billion in revenue, which marks a 21 per cent increase from the previous year,' said Dzulkefly. He noted that Malaysia's global reputation was further cemented when it ranked among the world's top 10 medical tourism destinations by Nomad Capitalist earlier this year. The campaign aligns with Visit Malaysia 2026, aiming to position healthcare as a key economic driver. Dzulkefly projected spillover benefits of RM12 to RM15 billion by 2030 for airlines, hotels, and local businesses. A key initiative under MYMT 2026 is the Flagship Medical Tourism Hospital (FMTH) programme, which recognises hospitals for clinical excellence and innovation. Four hospitals—Institut Jantung Negara, Island Hospital Penang, Mahkota Medical Centre, and Subang Jaya Medical Centre—are in the final assessment stage, with the winner to be announced in December. MOH Conducting Maldistribution Studies On Permanent Placement Of Medical Officers
KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Health (MOH) is conducting maldistribution studies to scrutinise the placement of medical officers at health facilities nationwide, said its Deputy Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni. For example, he said the MOH had offered 650 permanent positions in Sabah and Sarawak, but nearly 600 medical officers submitted appeal letters to be released from their postings in both states. "Only seven medical officers clicked on the permanent positions.. So, how can we help and uphold the rights of the people of Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan? Should we place all medical officers in the Klang Valley or urban areas only? "We must consider the human rights of all Malaysians appropriately. Nonetheless, we are working on ways to increase the number of permanent positions for deserving medical officers,' he said. He said this when winding up the debate on the motion for the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) 2023 Annual Report and Financial Statement at the Dewan Rakyat here today. Meanwhile, Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad said the Gig Workers Bill 2025, scheduled to be tabled during this sitting, specifically emphasises four main components - the definition of gig workers, income, dispute resolution mechanism and social security. He said the bill introduces a structured dispute resolution mechanism as an official channel for gig workers to present any issues or unfairness regarding their services, thus allowing the complaints to be addressed systematically.
