Malaysia Unveils AI-Powered Heart2Miss Breakthroughs At ESC-Heart Failure Congress

KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 (Bernama) -- Groundbreaking findings from Malaysia's Heart2Miss heart failure screening programme were presented at the European Society of Cardiology–Heart Failure Congress on May 18, 2025, in Serbia, highlighting major advances in early heart failure detection powered by artificial intelligence (AI).
Supported by AstraZeneca Malaysia, the initiative uses Us2.AI's state-of-the-art cardiac ultrasound analysis and was launched in June 2024 with backing from Sarawak's Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.
In a statement, AstraZeneca said the programme's effectiveness was demonstrated through the screening of 1,000 high-risk patients within a year, identifying 120 positive cases, by using a decentralised, community-based rapid cardiac ultrasound triage model.
'This approach leveraged the expertise of underemployed bioscience graduates as mobile community sonographers, reducing the burden on tertiary centres while enhancing patient referrals and outpatient management.
'Additionally, it facilitated earlier interventions and provided new career opportunities in health diagnostics,' the statement read.
According to the statement, the programme's implementation at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) has significantly streamlined referrals and outpatient care, cutting patient wait times for appointments from nine months to just a few days at nearby health clinics.
Heart2Miss Principal Investigator Dr Diana Hui-Ping Foo highlighted that the initiative demonstrates the power of combining innovation with equity, leveraging AI-echo (Us2.AI), telehealth and task-shifting to enable early heart failure detection at the community level.
'By training underutilised bioscience graduates as mobile echo screeners and introducing an intermediary care tier, we enhance primary care support and reduce burden on tertiary cardiac services,' said Foo, who is also the SGH Clinician-Researcher and Head of Human Physiology Lab.
Dr Diana Foo spearheaded the study alongside Dr Alan Fong, SGH's Head of Clinical Research Centre. Their collaboration with AstraZeneca Malaysia has been recognised as a model public-private partnership in advancing health outcomes.

SMC said the one-day festival is open to the public from 10 am to 4 pm and aims to raise awareness on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease, while encouraging early detection and healthier lifestyle choices. With the theme 'Every Move Matters, Every Step Counts Against NCDs', the festival will feature preventive healthcare through a dynamic blend of interactive exhibits, complimentary screenings and engaging family-friendly activities. It added that one of the festival's standout attractions is the 'Jantungku' Walkthrough Heart Exhibit, offering a close-up view at the human heart to help visitors understand how cardiovascular health is affected by everyday lifestyle choices. "Beyond the screenings and exhibits, the festival also promises a day of light-hearted fun and discovery. Game stations and flash quiz challenges will offer opportunities for all ages to learn about healthy living. Japan discards state-acquired Covid-19 drugs worth US$1.6bil

TOKYO: (Bernama-Kyodo) The Japanese government discarded Covid-19 oral medicines believed to be worth around 240 billion yen (US$1.6 billion) in the fiscal year through March as they had passed their expiry dates, Kyodo News Agency reported, citing health ministry officials on Wednesday (July 16). While the exact purchase price remains unclear, the value was calculated in accordance with current prices. The amount is enough to treat some 2.5 million people. The government acquired the oral drugs at the height of the coronavirus pandemic and provided them free of charge to hospitals and clinics nationwide. But many of them were unused after Covid-19 was downgraded to the same category as seasonal influenza in May 2023, which required people to pay for Covid-19 treatment. Drugmakers had also started general distribution of Covid-19 medicine in Japan themselves. A Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare official said offering the drugs to other countries was considered but legally difficult. Among the two million doses of Pfizer Inc.'s nirmatrelvir and 1.6 million doses of Merck & Co.'s molnupiravir procured by the government, about 1.75 million doses of nirmatrelvir and some 780,000 doses of molnupiravir were disposed of, according to the ministry. The government also secured two million doses of Shionogi & Co.'s ensitrelvir but about 1.77 million of them are unused, the ministry said.
