Shubman Gill breaks silence on Jasprit Bumrah's availability for 2nd Test: 'He is surely available but...'
India captain Shubman Gill confirmed Jasprit Bumrah is available for selection for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, beginning Wednesday, July 2. However, the final call on his participation will be taken later in the day once the team management has reviewed the 22 yards dished out for the contest. The No.1-ranked ICC Test bowler, Bumrah, dished out 43.4 overs in the series opener in Headingley. There was daylight between Bumrah and the rest of the seamers (Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur). The rest of the three pacers conceded runs at a brisk pace and were unable to create any sort of pressure.
Bumrah took five wickets in the first innings but failed to take a single wicket in the second innings. Shubman Gill seemingly managed Bumrah's workload in the middle of the Test, as he was not asked to bowl even when England were 85 runs away from the target of 371.
'Bumrah is surely available. We have to look into this workload management. We have to look into the final combination today at the nets,' Gill told reporters on the pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has slammed ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah for missing the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Pointing out Bumrah's absence, Pathan said that he could not "pick and choose" on which match to play in a bid to manage his workload. The Indian team decided to rest the right-arm pacer for the game, considering that it is a five-match Test series in England. Ahead of the tour, India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar had already mentioned that Bumrah would not play all the five matches. "If you are selected in the Indian team, you cannot pick and choose (which match to play) to manage your workload," Pathan said on Sony Sports. "There is no other bowler like him, he is world-class. But here, you are not missing the match because of injury but for workload management. "Now Akash Deep will take his place and be expected to do well as soon as he comes in - and maybe he does - but any bowler needs time to settle in. That continuity is needed." Right-arm pacer Akash Deep got included in India's playing XI for Edgbaston Test in place of Bumrah. India made two other changes as Washington Sundar and N itish Reddy were roped in for Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur. Pathan further spoke on India's dependency on veteran pacers Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. The latter has not been selected for the ongoing tour of England. "This is why I have been saying that Indian cricket has to start thinking about playing without Bumrah and (Mohammed) Shami. They have to start planning for playing without them in Test cricket," said Pathan. "The main fast bowler of the lineup cannot play all five Tests overseas, so firstly, India don't have Bumrah's services throughout the series, and secondly, his replacement, a younger player, is only getting a chance to play when he doesn't. So he does not have stability. "This is the only overseas five-match series of the new World Test Championship cycle. This was the series in which Bumrah was needed most. If he had a niggle or an injury, I would understand. But just to manage his workload? Then I don't think this is coming to India's advantage," Pathan added.

Birmingham: Yashasvi Jaiswal's promising knock ended in him making 87 while captain Shubman Gill showed enormous patience to be unbeaten on 42 as India reached 182/3 in 53 overs at tea on day one of second Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test against England at Edgbaston on Wednesday. It was a session where old-fashioned attritional cricket took centrestage, as India made 84 runs in 28 overs. Though Jaiswal fell 13 runs short of his sixth Test hundred, Gill continued to hold fort in his unbeaten 109-ball knock laced with just three boundaries. With Rishabh Pant unbeaten on 14 off 28 balls, India will look to pile more runs, as another session of toil awaits England's bowlers. The second session began with Gill and Jaiswal picking up singles whenever an opportunity came. While Jaiswal got a boundary by slicing over the slips, Gill got his boundaries off edges through gully twice, while being severely tested on playing around his front pad. Woakes continues to test Gill around the middle stump line in the hope of getting him playing across his front pad, but the Indian skipper, batting outside the crease, handled it well with his sturdy forward defence. With Tongue and Bashir coming in, Jaiswal and Gill got a four each as they brought up the fifty-run partnership. But Stokes once again pulled a rabbit out of a hat to get England a vital breakthrough, as Jaiswal tried to cut one away outside off and got a thin edge behind to keeper Jamie Smith, with the England skipper ecstatic in his celebration.
