Jay Wright snubs Knicks head coach job after Tom Thibodeau firing... despite close links to team

Daily Mail08-06-2025
Legendary college basketball head coach Jay Wright has no interest in returning to the sidelines, reportedly declining interest in the vacant New York Knicks head-coaching job.
Wright has been away from coaching since stepping down as Villanova's coach in 2022 after 21 years leading the Wildcats.
In his time at the private-school powerhouse, Wright had a 520-197 record and won two national titles.
Wright, 63, trading in his broadcast job for a clipboard again generated serious fan interest after Tom Thibodeau was fired as the team's coach on Tuesday, combined with three Villanova alumni in the Knicks' core.
Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges all played for Wright in the Philadelphia suburb.
A Big East reunion is not in the cards in the Big Apple, per Seth Davis.
Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges all played for Wright as Villanova's head coach
Wright has worked for both CBS Sports and TNT Sports since his Villanova career ended.
The Knicks' vacancy underscores the team's desire to win a championship, with the eventual hire needing to hang a banner inside Madison Square Garden for it to be seen as a successful tenure.
Wright no doubt has the basketball pedigree to be considered able to pull off the feat. Now, the Knicks will look elsewhere.
The team was linked with Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd earlier this week, while another longshot, home-run hire in Dan Hurley still exists.
Other options include Cavaliers assistant Johnnie Bryant and former Nuggets head coach Michael Malone among coaches with connections to the team or available leaders with previous championships.

Pete Alonso eyes Mets' homer mark in matchup with Guardians

August 5 - Pete Alonso inched closer to the New York Mets' all-time home run record on Monday. The Cleveland Guardians' unlikely playoff push took another small step forward, too. The Guardians will look to clinch a series win on Tuesday when they visit the Mets in the middle contest of a three-game interleague set. Left-hander Logan Allen (7-9, 4.06 ERA) is slated to start against Mets right-hander Clay Holmes (9-6, 3.45). Gabriel Arias homered and finished with four RBIs on Monday for the Guardians, who overcame squandering a five-run lead to edge the Mets 7-6 in 10 innings. Alonso socked a three-run shot in the sixth inning, the 251st homer of his career, one shy of Darryl Strawberry's record Mets total. The long ball began the comeback for the Mets, who tied the game in the eighth and had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth. Alonso, who hit an RBI single in the eighth, struck out in the ninth against Cade Smith before Jeff McNeil lined out. The Guardians scored twice in the 10th, when automatic runner Daniel Schneemann came home from second on a throwing error by third baseman Brett Baty before Arias added a sacrifice fly. The chaotic win improved the Guardians to 17-7 since July 7 -- the third-best record in the majors in that span behind only the Milwaukee Brewers and Boston Red Sox. Cleveland is 2 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners, who are tied for the last two American League wild-card spots. The Guardians were seven games out of the last playoff spot through July 6. Cleveland has mounted its push despite the absence of starting pitcher Luis L. Ortiz and closer Emmanuel Clase, both of whom were placed on the restricted list last month while they are the subjects of gambling investigations by Major League Baseball. "We just need to get in," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. "We just want to get in the dance and give ourselves a chance. I love the way our guys are playing. We just need to continue to be us every single day." The Mets might be in the process of making their path to the playoffs more difficult than it appeared nearly two months ago. New York had the best record in baseball at 45-24 through June 12 but is just 18-26 since. The Mets occupy the second National League wild-card position and are 1 1/2 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East -- matching their largest deficit since July 2. Alonso took solace in the comeback by the Mets, who took a 12-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday and didn't get a runner past second base in the first five innings Monday against Slade Cecconi. "I think it'd be more concerning if we just kind of got blown out 5-0," Alonso said. "But for us to kind of battle back and keep fighting, that's a lot of good signs." Allen earned a win in his most recent start, when he gave up two runs over a season-high seven innings as the Guardians beat the Colorado Rockies 10-4 on July 29. He has yet to face the Mets. Holmes took a defeat on Wednesday after allowing four runs (two earned) over a season-low 3 2/3 innings as the Mets fell 5-0 to the visiting San Diego Padres. Holmes is 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA and three saves in 10 appearances (all in relief) against the Guardians. --Field Level Media

Red Sox eager for another big inning vs. Royals

August 5 - The Boston Red Sox will attempt to extend their winning streak to seven games when they face the visiting Kansas City Royals on Tuesday. Boston opened the three-game series with an 8-5 victory on Monday. The Red Sox scored five runs in the first inning after scoring six times in the fourth of a 6-1 victory over the Houston Astros on Sunday. "We're not chasing as much, we're not striking out," Boston manager Alex Cora said. "We're putting the ball in play. We're running the bases extremely well, too. ... We've been really good the past three weeks baserunning-wise, and that puts pressure on the opposition." Boston particularly has been tough at home. The Monday victory gave the Red Sox 13 wins in their past 14 games at Fenway Park. "When we're rolling, this place is another weapon for us, so it's just been awesome to see the fans get behind us and help us with this push," said Boston's Jarren Duran, who hit a three-run homer in the first inning off Royals starter Bailey Falter. "I think we just have to keep our heads down and keep working, because I feel like that's what we've been doing all year and it's showing." After Kansas City scored four runs in the eighth to make it an 8-5 game, Nick Loftin ran through a stop sign and was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the inning. Had Loftin stayed at third, the Royals would have had the bases loaded with Vinnie Pasquantino at the plate. Pasquantino homered earlier in the frame. "I talked to him in the dugout," Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said of Loftin. "You gotta understand the game situation at that point. He's trying to be aggressive. He probably got a little carried away knowing there were two outs. "Normally you would take chances with two outs, but when you're down by three and you're getting the go-ahead run to the plate right there, you gotta stay at third. It's a mental mistake and he won't make that again." Boston won't have outfielder Roman Anthony in the lineup on Tuesday. Anthony was a late scratch Monday due to back tightness, and Cora said he planned to rest the rookie on Tuesday. "Everything felt normal all day and I felt something as I was stretching on the line," Anthony said. "Just figured we'd be cautious with it and was super uncomfortable. I relayed that quickly, and we decided we were going to shut it down. "I'll get with the training staff and figure that out, but I'm already definitely trending in the right direction and feeling better than it was earlier." The Red Sox appear to be in a good position to build on their winning streak since left-hander Garrett Crochet (12-4, 2.23 ERA) -- Boston's ace -- is scheduled to start on Tuesday. Crochet is 1-1 with a 1.62 ERA in eight career appearances (two starts) against the Royals. He won at Kansas City on May 10 after throwing seven innings of one-run ball and striking out nine. Rookie right-hander Ryan Bergert (1-0, 2.78) is scheduled to make his Royals debut. Bergert, who was acquired from the San Diego Padres just before the trade deadline last week, will be making his first career appearance against Boston. Bergert made 11 appearances (seven starts) for the Padres this season, and he recorded 34 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings. --Field Level Media
