Two South Carolina state agencies working on land buys in Florence, Horry counties valued at $12M
Documents included in Wednesday's Joint Bond Review Committee show involvement by the state Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism on a 111.2-acre project abutting Waties Island and a nearly 4,600-acre acquisition that's part of Snow's Island in Florence County — with a combined purchase price of more than $12 million.
The New York-based Open Space Institute in February said it secured 115 acres on and around Waties Island, South Carolina's last pristine barrier island that spans 22 miles from Myrtle Beach to the North Carolina border.
'The project was established as a donation, however, due to the availability of federal funds to reimburse the state for its initial contribution, the property will now be purchased,' the agenda says. 'The property is one of the last remaining undeveloped and unprotected barrier islands of this size in the southeastern United States.'
Locking up the land would protect 'key ecological services afford by this open space to the larger built environment around it,' state officials said.
Open Space Institute is offering the land for $2 million, which would be paid for using National American Wetlands Conservation Grant Act funds.
Just before Christmas, Gov. Henry McMaster visited Snow's Island in Florence County to celebrate a landmark land preservation deal totaling 7,600 acres.
A full project estimate shows $1.5 million from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and $8.5 million from the federal Forest Service.

Why Figma Stock Skyrocketed 250% This Week
Key Points Figma stock surged 247% after its IPO, hitting a market cap close to $60 billion. Impressive recent growth (more than 40% YOY) and widespread adoption highlight the platform's strength. At this valuation, investors must believe Figma can sustain rapid growth and fend off intensifying AI-driven competition. 10 stocks we like better than Figma › Shares of Figma (NYSE: FIG) exploded this week after its public debut on Thursday. The stock is currently trading 253% higher than its initial public offering (IPO) price as of 3:17 p.m. ET. The extreme leap comes as the S&P 500 lost 2.4%, and the Nasdaq-100 lost 2.2% amid new tariffs and weak jobs data. Figma, which offers a web-based design platform that is used to create websites and apps, IPOed on Thursday at $33 a share and is now trading above $118. The huge IPO eclipsed even the recent success of Circle Internet, which saw its stock triple in the first few weeks. Figma's stock is red hot The company has now reached a valuation of nearly $60 billion. That is a pretty hefty valuation, given the company's 2024 sales of under $750 million. Granted, it has grown its top line by more than 40% in both of the last two years. That's pretty impressive. I have doubts, however, about how long this trajectory can last. The company touts that "95% of the Fortune 500" used Figma in March of this year. While that number lends clout to the company and the quality of its product, it's a double-edged sword. It calls into question how much the company can continue growing its enterprise revenue if it is already so ubiquitous among the most important companies in the world. I have serious doubts about the strength of Figma's moat and its ability to defend it in a hyper-competitive landscape actively being transformed by artificial intelligence (AI), at least at its current valuation. It would need to continue to deliver 40% growth for years to justify its current valuation and continue to offer investors a solid return. Should you buy stock in Figma right now? Figma stock gains 5% after blockbuster 250% debut rally
Figma (FIG) stock seesawed on Friday, ending the day up a bit more than 5% after dipping negative throughout morning trading. Friday's moves come after shares in Figma rocketed upward by 250% in Thursday's blockbuster public market debut. The design software company priced its IPO at $33 per share late Wednesday, and the stock did not begin trading until nearly 2:00 p.m. ET on Thursday. Shares opened for trade at $85 and were halted more than once Thursday afternoon due to volatility as traders rushed into the name amid what's become a frenzied IPO market for new tech issues. Figma's IPO price gave the company a market value near $20 billion. As of the closing bell on Friday, the company was worth roughly $59 billion. Figma's IPO price came in above estimates of $30-$32 per share, signaling bullish investor interest in the company. As part of the offering, Figma raised about $1.2 billion in a sale of 36.94 million shares, split between the company's sale of 12.47 million shares and existing shareholders' sale of 24.46 million shares. The company's current valuation has made it worth close to triple the $20 billion price tag for which software giant Adobe (ADBE) had tried to acquire Figma in 2023 before having to cancel the deal after anti-competition pushback from European regulators. This year saw rapid growth for Figma, led by 33-year-old CEO Dylan Field, as the design software and collaboration toolmaker reported revenue growth of over 46% year over year, according to securities filings. The company noted that more than 75% of the Forbes 2000 companies use its software. The IPO was one of the most successful of the year, beating out the performance of the previous 2025 IPO darling, Circle Internet Group (CRCL), which popped by 168% in its first day of trading in June. Circle is up more than 490% since its IPO. AI play CoreWeave (CRWV) has also seen its shares rise more than 190% since its debut in March. The success of Figma's offering is the latest sign that the year of dealmaking called for by Wall Street may finally be here after a first half that saw M&A stymied by tariff uncertainty and a market downturn.
