Why Luke Littler is still not world No1 despite best darts player on the planet completing Triple Crown within 15 months

The Sun4 days ago
LUKE LITTLER is the best darts player in the world at present – but why is he not the world No.1 according to the PDC?
Midway through his second year as a professional player, The Nuke completed the Triple Crown set when he lifted the Betfred World Matchplay at Blackpool's Winter Gardens on Sunday night.

Within a 15-month period, the 18-year-old has taken possession of the Premier League Darts crown, the World Championship and now the Matchplay title – the three most prestigious and richest tournaments in the sport.
Littler is Box Office material and his 18-13 victory in the final over James Wade was secured with a three-dart average of 107.24.
That was the highest seen in the final since Phil Taylor was victorious in 2014 – the year he won his 15th of a record 16 crowns – with 107.19.
The £200,000 winner's cheque means the Warrington teen has earned £1,500,500 in ranking money since the start of January 2024.
That total does not include the HALF A MILLION pounds he has earned from competing in two editions of the Premier League.
Luke Humphries is top of the standings with £1,797,750 but the gap is only £297,250 and there is a fair chance Littler will become the official world No.1 come the end of the year.
In fact it might come sooner than that when the packed autumn schedule begins and there is a run of four major TV titles that carry lucrative cash sums.
The PDC Order of Merit is based on prize money won over a two-year period by players in ranking tournaments.

In the latter half of 2023, Humphries, 30, announced himself as the dominant figure, winning the World Grand Prix (£120,000), Grand Slam of Darts (£150,000) and Players Championship Finals (£120,000) – before lifting the Sid Waddell Trophy (£500,000) for the first time.
In total, Cool Hand Luke has to defend £890,000 prize money between October 6, 2025 and January 3, 2026.
Luke Littler, 18, plants kiss on girlfriend Faith, 19, during walk-on for World Matchplay Darts quarter-final
In contrast, Littler is defending NOTHING right now because he is yet to complete a full second term in the pro ranks.
Everything he gets is a free hit and will only boost his chances of being the top oche thrower.
If Humphries were to keep losing in the early rounds – his Matchplay defence ended in round one in a 10-8 loss to Gian van Veen – and Littler continues to win, then the switch between the two Lukes will take place sooner than possible.
It might happen in November at the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton, that is assuming Humphries is knocked out early at the World Grand Prix in Leicester.

There is a strong chance come the start of the 2025/26 PDC World Darts Championships, which begins on December 11 and is now a 20-day event, then Littler will return to Ally Pally, where he was victorious in January, as the undisputed best player on the planet.
Do not forget, of course, that the prize money for the Worlds has doubled from £500,000 to £1million this time, which completely skewers the world ranking standings even more for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
I've looked at the rankings provisionally. I'm No.1 for the Worlds if Luke doesn't defend all that prize money."
Luke Littler after winning the World Matchplay
Littler has long said that his main ambitions in the sport are to win every major at least once and become world No.1.
That might happen sooner than he wants – indeed this time next year he may tick off all those targets.
Speaking on Sunday night with the Phil Taylor Trophy in his hands, Littler said that he had looked at the PDC website and had done the maths.
He said: 'The start of my career I wanted to win one of every major. There's not that many to go.
'I've looked at the rankings provisionally. I'm No.1 for the Worlds if Luke doesn't defend all that prize money.
'Obviously I don't want him to. But we'll just have to find out and try and add more money to my rankings.'
Asked if he would still have the hunger to win after potentially lifting every major title at least once, Littler replied: 'That's what everybody is probably thinking once I've won one of everything.
'But for myself, I have to build on it and get multiple of everything, triple of everything. Once I win one of everything, I won't pack it in just yet.

James Milner will wear number 20 at Brighton in memory of Diogo Jota

James Milner will wear the number 20 shirt at Brighton this season in memory of the late Diogo Jota, describing his former Liverpool team-mate as a 'great friend'. The Portuguese forward died aged 28 last month in a car crash, alongside his brother Andre Silva, just weeks after helping Liverpool clinch Premier League title glory. Liverpool have retired the number 20 jersey worn by Jota in his five seasons at Anfield, three of them alongside Milner before the veteran England midfielder moved to Brighton in the summer of 2023. With Carlos Baleba opting to have 17 on his back ahead of the 2025/26 campaign and vacating 20, Milner, who has been Brighton's number six, has swooped in to pay a touching tribute to Jota. 'Once I heard Carlos was looking to change his number and 20 was available, I wanted to do it as a mark of respect and pay tribute to Diogo Jota,' Milner said on the club's X channel. 'He was an amazing player who I was fortunate to play with and a great friend as well. 'It will be a great honour to wear his number in the Premier League this year.' Milner – whose contract was extended by Brighton in June for another season, which will take him past his 40th birthday – was among a number of Jota's former team-mates who attended his funeral in July.

Glorious Goodwood day five: Betting odds and race rundown

THE RAIN that has fallen in the past 48 hours has had a significant impact on the underfoot conditions. Many intended runners for the final day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival have already been withdrawn due to the ground, and it will be a case of finding the horses that will adapt best to the conditions. The Stewards' Cup is the biggest betting race of the day, whereas the quality lies in the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes as Term Of Endearment looks to go back-to-back in the race. Win singles and each way bets from the best horse racing betting sites: 1:20 Group 3 Coral Glorious Stakes (4yo+) - 1m4f None of the seven in here can be fully trusted to run to their mark. Al Aasy, last season's winner, sits at the top of the betting, but he will not want any more rain to fall. If the rain were to persist, his participation here would be questionable. Candleford found his form once again, but he needs to improve on that to have a major say here. That leads to ARABIAN CROWN, who was behind Al Aasy at Sandown in April, but the underfoot conditions will be right up his street here. He has twice won on soft ground in the past, and with his preferred conditions now, he may be able to reverse form with Al Aasy and prove hard to beat. Mount Atlas has winning form on soft ground, and if he can kick on from his latest win, he can outrun his odds here. 2024 Winner: Al Aasy J: Jim Crowley T: William Haggas Odds: 3/1 Our pick: ARABIAN CROWN 1:55 Coral Summer Handicap (3yo+) - 1m6f Extra stamina reserves will be tested here, and the will to win will be truly tested to the maximum. Dancing In Paris needs to leave his last run behind, but he did too much throughout the race, which cost him in the finish. He will need to settle much better here, and if he does, he has already shown that this mark is well within his reach. Joseph O'Brien sends over Aeronautic, who comes here on the back of an over three-length fifth to French Master at Royal Ascot. He won on good to yielding at Leopardstown, so there is a reason to be optimistic that he will handle softer conditions. He looks set to run well off the same mark. WONDER LEGEND was set an enormous task in the Ascot Gold Cup, where he was never comfortable and was eventually pulled up. He came into Ascot on a fast upward curve, winning three of his previous four starts in impressive fashion. Yes, you must forgive him his run at Ascot, which it is easy to do, and now back in handicap company, he looks set to go well off top weight. 2024 Winner: Align The Stars J: Joe Fanning T: Charlie Johnston Odds: 10/3Fav Our pick: WONDER LEGEND 2:30 Group 2 Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (3yo+) - 1m6f Goodie Two Shoes comes in here on the back of three wins in a row, the latest of them being in Group 3 company. All of his wins have come on good ground, and any time she has come up against softer conditions, she hasn't run her race. She will need the ground to dry out here, so it can be worth siding with last year's winner, TERM OF ENDEARMENT. A winner of this race last season for Henry de Bromhead, the daughter of Sea The Moon has yet to get off the mark in three runs for her new connections. She was sent off a well-backed odds-on favourite over two miles at Sandown, but she never shaped that two miles would be truly within reach. She now drops back to her optimum trip on the ground that she has shown winning form on in a Cork Group 3. She will not mind what condition the ground is in, and she has every chance of defending her crown here. 2024 Winner: Term Of Endearment J: Billy Lee T: Henry de Bromhead Odds: 15/2 Our pick: TERM OF ENDEARMENT 3:05 Coral Stewards' Cup (3yo+) - 6f As expected, the stewards' cup is a challenging puzzle to solve. Hammer The Hammer was a wide-margin winner at Southwell and Chester, before going on to be beaten a length by Adrestia over five furlongs at Royal Ascot. That form has been franked this week, with the first and second going agonisingly close in the Shaker Handicap here on Tuesday. The return to six furlongs is a plus, and given that he is a strong stayer at the trip, he may find more if this turns into a test of stamina. Two Tribes got right back to form when winning a twenty-one-runner handicap at Ascot last weekend. He drops to six furlongs here, but his extra stamina may come into play, and if he kicks on again, he is a big player. The one who gets the tentative vote is CIRCE. This ground versatile filly was a good winner last time out, and before that, she was seen running well in deep ground at Epsom. She's a strong traveller who will get a good toe into the race from her draw, and if she gets the break, she is sure to go close under Ryan Moore. Orazio is talented but frustrating. However, one of these will fall for him sooner rather than later. Vadream has been in the doldrums of late, but his mark is reflected in that; he is looking extremely well handicapped now. And on ground he handles, it could spark a revival. Get It (last year's winner), Elmonjed, Run Boy Run, and Kroker all have place chances. Our pick: CIRCE 3:45 Whispering Angel Handicap (3yo 0-105) - 7f Dancing In The Storm made a winning handicap debut at Sandown but could only manage a fourth-place finish behind Mudbir back over the same course and distance. Things didn't go smoothly on the day, and she can be given another chance here. Course and distance winner Consolidation ran well in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot. He was only beaten five lengths on the day, and that performance can be marked up, given that there was a huge high draw bias on the day. HEADMASTER is attractively bred and got off the mark in good style at the third time of asking. Given his pedigree, Headmaster should be well capable off this mark. By Dubawi out of One Master, a multiple Group 1 winner on deep ground, Headmaster can take his form to a new level in conditions he should relish. Another to take note of is Rare Change, who can be forgiven for his latest run on the all-weather and can resume his progress here. Our pick: HEADMASTER 4:20 British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes (2yo) - 7f There are plenty of experienced runners in here, and Exclusive Code, who was turned over as favourite in what looked a decent maiden (third has won since), is a good starting point. He looks set to raise his game here and will be playing a major role in the finish (dam handled soft ground). Dr Richard Newland & Jamie Insole's stable have been running well of late, and Island Bear can go well at big odds on the back of his third in a Salisbury maiden that is working out well. However, this should really revolve around Aidan O'Brien's ISAAC NEWTON. He finished runner-up to stablemate New Zealand at the Curragh (third Action runs at Galway today), and given that Isaac Newton wasn't given a hard time to finish a head second, it's easy to see him making it second time lucky here. 2024 Winner: Hott Shott J: Rossa Ryan T: Richard Hughes Odds: 5/1 Our pick: ISAAC NEWTON 4:55 Coral Golden Rewards Shaker Handicap (3yo+ 0-95) - 1m1f Gladius still showed signs of greenness when winning at Sandown, and given the strength of that win, he can take his hike in the weights in his stride. He is respected as is Boyfriend and his Newmarket concourer, Dutch Decoy (also declared yesterday). The Charlie Johnston runner has found his form once again, winning two in a row. He has gone up a total of ten pounds for those two wins, but he is still well in on his old form. Should he run here, you have to give him massive respect in his current form. Treasure Time was a good fourth on his comeback, and with fitness now on his side, this progressive gelding can fight it out where it matters the most. However, siding with two-time course and distance winner ALPHA CRUCIS can pay off. His two wins here came on deep ground, and given the hope that we will still be dealing with soft ground here, he comes here with a massive each-way chance off a four-pound higher mark than his last win. 🕔 Qatar Goodwood day five schedule TIME RACE DISTANCE 1:20 Group 3 Coral Glorious Stakes 1m4f 1:55 Coral Summer Handicap 1m6f 2:30 Group 2 Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes 1m6f 3:05 Coral Stewards' Cup 6f 3:45 Whispering Angel Handicap 7f 4:20 British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes 7f 4:55 Coral Golden Rewards Shaker Handicap 1m1f 📺 How to watch day five of the Qatar Goodwood Festival Location: Goodwood, United Kingdom Date/Time: Saturday, 2nd August 2025. Canavan out to prove Barrow doubters wrong again

Barrow captain Niall Canavan says that he is happy nobody considers the Bluebirds as promotion contenders so that they can prove people wrong have been big changes under head coach Andy Whing this summer as Barrow look to kick on from finishing 16th last season, and Canavan is ready for the challenge ahead."I couldn't give two hoots what most people say," Canavan told BBC Radio Cumbria."Most people in life, at whatever job you are doing, at some point you have to prove somebody wrong."If people are writing us off, good luck to them." Barrow captain Canavan is now the longest-serving player at the club after Robbie Gotts joined Doncaster Rovers this joining from Bradford City in 2022, the defender has grown used to people underestimating he highlights Lionesses star Chloe Kelly in how she went from being out of the picture at Manchester City in the winter to scoring England's winning penalty in the Euro 2025 final last Sunday."Chloe Kelly is the perfect example," said Canavan. "From where she was to where she has been in recent weeks."You sometimes write people off at your peril, so don't take any notice of that."
