Broncos player issues defiant message with Ben Hunt's return set to see him axed
Hunt has been out since injuring himself against the Rabbitohs in round 10 after a MCL injury. While he was expected to play this weekend at Suncorp, Maguire has been forced to sit him out for another round after failing to recover in time. This means Cory Paix will start at dummy-half, while Walters will come off the bench.
Paix and Walters have switched roles a number of times throughout the season as Maguire has looked to find the right balance for his team. Paix appears to have won back the starting role, which leaves Walters in a precarious situation.
Walters appears to have one more chance to prove himself this weekend, before Hunt is fit. And the Broncos utility admitted he isn't ready to let go of his jersey. "I feel like everyone's position's up for grabs," Walters said.
"You have got to be playing good footy or you're not going to be in the team. So I don't know which way Madge (coach Michael Magure) is going to go. "It's kind of been up to me and Paixy to see who's playing the best or see who can bring the most to the team, so, I suppose we'll see in the next coming weeks.
"I keep asking Dozer (Hunt) when he's going to be back, hoping he can push it back a little bit further just to make sure I'm in the team, but even if I'm not in the team I'll still be trying hard to get back in. You never know with rugby league these days, it could change pretty quickly, so you've always got to be ready and just take the opportunity when it's there."
The Broncos have struggled at times this year with Hunt slotting into No.6 while Ezra Mam was serving his suspension. While the likes of Cooper Cronk thought the Broncos were better off with Hunt at five-eighth alongside Adam Reynolds, the form of Reece Walsh dropped as he struggled to link-up with the new spine.
Mam's return appears to have helped Walsh play with more freedom and Hunt will revert to the No.9 role he was initially brought into play. While Hunt has played No.7 for most of his NRL career, he shifted to No.9 for Queensland in State of Origin.
Slater has opted to use Hunt to start game in previous Origin series, working in tandem with Harry Grant in a dual-hooker role for Queensland. In fact, the Maroons' Game 2 vicory in Perth was the first time in five games that they'd won with the Storm superstar starting at hooker
Hunt has excelled in this role having played it for both the Maroons and Australia. The switch would give Brisbane another creative outlet in attack and much needed big-game experience.

While Walters is fighting for his position in the Broncos 17, the utility admitted he is just ready to take advantage of his opportunity. "You can't think too far ahead anyway. You have got to enjoy every moment that you pull on the Broncos jersey and be grateful for every chance that you get and go out there and play your best footy," he added. I just know if I'm playing my best football, then I'll be in the team somewhere."

‘I am sorry': Parting message to beloved Blue
Carlton champion Sam Docherty will retire with a parting apology and hope for superstar Blues captain Patrick Cripps. Docherty announced his retirement on Tuesday morning, drawing a curtain on one of footy's most motivating careers. He will play his 184th and final game this Thursday against Hawthorn at the MCG. Docherty moved from Brisbane to Carlton ahead of the 2014 season just days before the Blues drafted their now dual Brownlow Medal champion out of Western Australia. They arrived at Princes Park together and would eventually captain the club together in 2021. In a brilliant retirement speech in front of family, friends and teammates, Docherty detailed a decade-long dream he and Cripps shared. He apologised for calling time prematurely but hoped Cripps would carry on to live out their dream of premiership success. 'I have already made the big fella cry today but to 'Crip', a bit more prepared this time, mate,' Docherty said. 'Thanks, mate, again. We've had a solid dream together for the last 10 to 12 years about where we wanted to take this footy club. 'I am sorry we don't get that moment we've dreamed of, it's something I have chased with you and wanted to have with you for my whole time I've been at the club. 'Hopefully you get what you deserved and you get the success you deserve across your career, mate. 'Thanks for guidance, friendship, love, support, all of that across my career, mate, I've needed it more than you'll ever know.' Docherty said three games have stood out across his career. The milestone game of his good mate Kade Simpson, who will coach Hawthorn's back six in Docherty's last game, his first game back from his cancer battle and the final win over Melbourne in 2023. 'Three games that stick out to me the most,' he said. 'Simmo's 250th, the emotion playing in that, he was my idol, still was when he was here and still is now, to be honest. 'Playing his milestone moment, having a big win, my return game from cancer and kicking the goal with everything behind that and what that meant to other people. 'Then the semi-final win over Melbourne, three games, to be honest most of the other memories … the fun of being in a footy club, the people you meet, the highs and lows of it all – it's all just a big part of footy I have loved.'

Cameron Smith lifts lid on potential role alongside Kevin Walters after losing out
NRL legend Cameron Smith has revealed he could be open to an assistant role for the Australian national side after losing out on the top job to Kevin Walters. The Kangaroos are soon to name a coach to lead the nation against England in a three-match Ashes series taking place the first time since 2003. The first Test against England gets underway at London's Wembley Stadium on October 25. This week it emerged Walters is to be confirmed for the role with the incoming coach winning the position over Melbourne Storm and Queensland great Smith. NRL legend Brad Fittler was considered a favourite for the role, but withdrew from the race due to his media commitments with Channel Nine. And Smith has revealed on 100% Footy he received a phone call from Peter V'Landys telling him Walters had got the job. "I think Kev will do a great job, I was luckily enough to be coached by Kev...I think he will do a really good job," Smith said on Monday night. "I had a phone call from Peter V'Landys a couple of days ago. There was no formal discussion around me being the coach. There was no gave me a phone call just to let me know that the decision was made they are going to go with Kev. I am happy with that decision, I respect that decision. If I had a chance to put my case forward, I would have...I think it's a great appointment." Smith is considered one of the best minds in the NRL, but one of the factors that appeared to work against him is he has no experience as a head coach. He previously worked as an assistant to Billy Slater with the Queensland State of Origin team. His knowledge of the game and experience as the Kangaroos captain is what led him to being an attractive candidate for the role. And Smith revealed an assistant role was brought mentioned in the phone call. "Well that was mentioned in the phone call. That could be possibly something to look I haven't had any further discussions with Peter, with Andrew Abdo or anyone in the NRL about that," Smith added. While Smith revealed an assistant coaching role was a potential avenue back into the fold, it would most likely be up to Walters on who serves on his team. Regardless, Smith was thrilled with Walters' appointment, even if it was on a reported short deal. Kevin Walters preferred to Cameron Smith for Kangaroos job The former Broncos coach has won two State of Origin series in charge of the Maroons and led Brisbane to the 2023 NRL grand final, before being replaced by Michael Maguire after a poor season last year. News Corp reports that Walters has won the race to replace Mal Meninga as Australia's next coach, but only on a three-game deal that will see him lead the Kangaroos in the end of year Ashes series against England. If the Kangaroos enjoy a winning three-Test series against England and play some attractive footy in their first Ashes tour in 22 years, there's every chance Walters keeps the job for the home World Cup next year. The concern for some in the rugby league community is Australia is a few months out from the resurrected Ashes series with England that starts in October and there has no been no formal announcement of a coach. While an announcement is imminent, selection and plans need to be laid out for the historic series. Australia and England have not taken part in an Ashes-style series in 20 years. The Kangaroos have won a record 13 consecutive Ashes series.
